What are the Benefits of DVC???

Thank you everyone for your help. I just really needed to hear some positive things about DVC. I have been reading Disboards to much I guess scared myself some :). It is nice to know there are positives with DVC as well. When I purchased I was thrilled then I started reading all these different stories and it seemed noone had anything positive to say.

I didnt ask for negative snide remarks I asked politely for positive things about DVC. I got my information from the person who sold me DVC apparently she was either misleading or misinformed herself. Either way I purchased DVC and would like polite people who can share what the benefits of DVC are. Some people feel the need to insult me and my opinion so be it but thats not what I asked for nor what I want. If you have to insult or be rude then feel free to skip posting here all I am asking for are the POSITIVE things about DVC.

We were just able to book 3 nights in a standard view studio in Jambo House at Animal Kingdom Villas for my BIL & SIL for the 2nd week in May (only 4 months out). We used banked points that we were going to lose if we didn't book something on them before next November. Because we're going to Europe + doing a DCL Med cruise this summer we just couldn't squeeze in another trip. For them tho this represents a chance to stay on site for their first time ever. The rack rate for this room is $382 / night. Even with a 40% off code for his military discount it would've run them $229 / night ($687)! The fact that we can basically gift this to them is huge - and it's no sweat off our backs to do it. They will stay at Shades of Green prior to these nights and I am so excited for them to move up for the 2nd half of their stay to a deluxe Disney property.

I think it's a huge positive to know we can just call up & see what's available & just be open to take whatever we can get - we'll be at Disney - it doesn't matter THAT much to us if it's SSR or VWL or AKV - we're just happy to go. (Same for BIL & SIL - they just wanted to GO!!) I love that it doesn't require a ton of budgeting and planning (outside of our flights and AP's). I love knowing that we'll be back again & again & again so if we miss riding something for the 4th time it's OK - it will be there the next time. I love knowing our way around the parks because we've been able to go so often. I love having a favorite place to eat. I love having our Owners Locker waiting for us. I love being a Disneyphile!! I love our DVC!! For the most part it's all good and I think THAT is a positive. :thumbsup2 It is defnitely our second home!

Well, people tend to be more vocal about negatives things than they are about positives, unfortunately that is human nature. There are negatives to owning but if they weren't outweighed greatly by the positives we wouldn't be DVC owners!

Ok, here are the positive reasons why we bought DVC:

1. We have a 14 yo son and a 12 yo daughter. We get a two bedroom villa so they don't even have to sleep in the same room on vacation. And, since our home resort is AKL, we get three bathrooms so the four of us can all get ready at pretty much the same time. Not even getting two rooms at the value resorts could give us that.

2. Breakfast in our villa is a huge, huge time saver! Last time we were at WDW, we only ate one breakfast outside of our villa and that's only because Chef Mickey's is our family tradition. And really, I hate to cook when I'm on vacation too, but making breakfast (scrambling a couple of eggs, toasting some bread) isn't really "cooking".

3. The washer and dryer are wonderful. Since our trips usually involve flying, we can pretty much get everything we need into a couple of carryons and run a load or two of laundry during the week, depending on how long we stay.

4. Frozen water bottles! We were there in October of 2009 and it was unseasonably hot. We froze a few water bottles overnight and carried them into the parks -- we had cold water almost all day. Another trick I learned from one of DS's Little League coaches: freeze wet washcloths. We brought some from home and kept them in ziplock bags in my backpack. They were so refreshing! There's no way we could have done all of that in a regular resort room and the little things like that can make or break a vacation....

5. Hilton Head, Aulani, the Grand Californian -- There are other places we can go besides WDW that are still Disney Vacation Club. And, if something ever comes of the land Disney bought in the Washington DC area, there may be more in the future. This isn't one of the reasons we bought DVC, but after having been to Hilton Head once, we know we're going back (in May!)

6. Thanks to expiring points, we "have to" take a vacation at least every other year. Sometimes when life gets really crazy, it helps to know that we have an escape planned.

7. Although it's not the best use of points, and there is the $95 fee, exchanging is possible. This year a trip to WDW just wasn't in the cards for us, so we went through RCI and got an exchange to Gatlinburg, TN. It wasn't quite the same quality, but it was much nicer than anywhere we would have stayed if we'd been paying out of pocket.

8. I know that others here have pointed out that the points don't actually go up every year, they get reallocated sometimes. Since most of our trips to WDW are over long weekends during the school year, our point costs actually went down by 12 points. So it's not always negative.

The very best of DVC are the one bedroom, two bedroom, tree house villas, and Grand Villas.

If you buy DVC to stay in a studio in my opinion, no it is not worth the cost.

We had our first stay at BLT in November -- we absolutely loved our new home and had no regrets.

As for the negative, I came home after our April 2010 cruise (when we purchased) and started reading more -- like you, I saw negative and got a little nervous. I stopped reading, remembered my research before we purchased and was happy with that. Our trip in November was not without issues - but I don't let those 1% things ruin my day. For me, it was totally magical that DH and DD were able to take an afternoon nap while I walked over to MK and shopped...all by myself!!! Total bliss to take my time and slowly go through those stores (to each his own, right). We love the Welcome Home, the room, having a comfy sofa and a place to pop a bag of popcorn and everything. The buses were not crowded and we liked jumping on the monorail. Watching the fireworks in our PJs was another teary eyed moment - the smiles on my families faces and the music coming from the TV - wow! My daughter wants to stay at AKV - so we compromised for our May trip and are doing 3 nights in a SV room at AKV and then 3 nights at BLT. No issues getting either of these at 11 months/7 months......

Enjoy and don't over-think it (ignore the negative ;))

Totally agree with you. We bought into DVC last February. I found the boards then started reading all the negatives. But our trip was fast approaching (May) and we had already closed on the deal. So I went to BLT with much aprehension. Was everything perfect? No. At the end of the day did it bother me? No. Has any hotel I've ever been in (I travel a lot) been perfect? Never and I've stayed at some expensive places over the years.

For me BLT was awesome and so has been DVC. We took our second DVC trip to AKV in December (first time we got to see Christmas) and while it was great, I kept missing BLT. For someone like me with DD4, it's awesome to be so close to the Magic Kingdom and a quick couple of monorails away from Epcot.

We already have two trips booked for 2011 to visit my first home away from home (BLT) and my second home away from home (Aulani).

Owning DVC, for us, has allowed us to enjoy life a little bit more. I can work crazy hours at times and I hate to say it, but DVC nudges me into taking some time for the family.

One of the best parts of owning DVC? When we were there in May (5 night stay) we didn't get over to Animal Kingdom. But rather than stress out about it, we knew we would get to it *next time*, and while we didn't know when next time was yet, we knew it wouldn't be that far away. When we were there this past December (again a 5 night stay) we didn't make it over to Hollywood Studios. And that was ok. We'll get over there in 2011.

We own DVC for the nookie perk.

That's pretty much it. I like daily housekeeping. I like hotel rooms. I find paying cash for cruises to be not a huge deal.

But having your kids sleep in a different room.....priceless.

Now that you are in, have reasonable expectations for what you own. Educate yourself on what you own. It may be that this turns out to be not a great value for you - in which case sell. But it sounds like you are going to give it a shot. It has a better shot if you are realistic. Yeah, there are a lot of downer threads around here, but personally, I think its better to have the EXPECTATION that a room at the Beach Club Villa will be hard to get at seven months and then DELIGHTED when it is available, then have the expectation that you'll be able to book whatever you want, and be crushed when that isn't the case. Have the expectation that the room with be clean, but perhaps a little worn - and the small stain on the carpet won't bug you.

Do some searching for Disney DVC room photos. If you can find "lived in" rooms those are WAY better to look at that Disney's staged photos where everything is perfect. Understand what you are getting and what you aren't.

There may be some pleasant surprises along the way. We didn't think the kitchen or washer/dryer in a one/two bedroom would be all that useful - and we LOVE them. We come home with clean laundry. We eat breakfast in the room each morning before hitting the parks - and often a good breakfast - eggs, toast - that gets us through to lunchtime.

they are up front with most of these things. You also can get everyday housekeeping at a very small charge. The biggest benefit is you feel like you are staying at home and not a hotel.

:)We get to take my parents, my husband's parents, my SIL/BIL and nieces as our guests to help us celebrate our anniversary. We would never have been able to do this without DVC:thumbsup2

:goodvibes The idea of Disney vacations for decades to come

:cool1:Watching my kids do the happy dance when I told them we were DVC members. (They then asked "what does that mean?")

I have enjoyed reading other positive responses, as we are new to DVC too.

We just joined and so far all I can find are negatives?

1. No Mousekeeping everyday - aka no towel animals :-(
2. Pay in full for DDP at time of booking
3. Pay in full for DCL instead of a deposit, cash and points paid at time of booking.
4. People who book the same resort at the same time I do with free dining get a better deal. (actually my DVC agent did the math)
5. I dont get to book when I want I have to wait for a window to open up - aka 11 months or 7 months
6. after waiting for my window to open up im not guaranteed the rooms availability I may get put onto a waiting list??
7. points go up every year so eventually the points i purchased wont be enough I will have to purchase more at a higher rate than I have now.
8. $95.00 fee for anything Disney doesnt own so there goes any savings you might get and get this they dont own their own Cruise line!!
9. Buses come less often (as compared to value resorts) so I would assume they would be more crowded.

SO what exactly am I paying for if I dont have a guarantee of a room when I want to stay and my room doesnt get cleaned every day?
There doesnt seem to be any positives? We are hoping to find some so Please if you have any to offer please do so.
I have to agree! One of the biggest problems I have is there POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. Its horrid! AND I MEAN HORRID!

Did you get a chance to tour the rooms??

To me, the positives are all about the larger rooms in the beautiful settings. We go to WDW all the time, so the parks are less of a focus for me and my husband...although my son still loves them. To us, a vacation is being able to put our son to bed, then stay up and watch TV, talk, enjoy cocktails, unwind....none of which is fun to do even in the nicest hotel room at DWDW, but great in a one- or 2 bedroom.

We also enjoy having friends join us. Again, they bring the kids who can play in the big living room area, while we are out on the patio chatting and catching up. We can cook big, easy dinners together (saving lots of money) and just relax.

Like others, we enjoy NOT having maids. I hate having to get out of my room early to accommodate the maids. And the DVC rooms are nice enough that you are in no hurry to get out of them!

We've been owners for 15 years, and consider it one of the best purchases we ever made.

However who in their right mind would imagine no housekeeping? For real? When im on vacation I dont want to cook, make beds or clean that is not a vacation.

We're all still human with needs to eat, and the mornings that we had early breakfast in our room were some of our better mornings.

I don't want to make beds anywhere, not at home, even. So I just don't. NO wait, actually, while at WDW last month I did find myself straightening the bed, and DH nearly fell over in shock, because I seriously Do Not Make My Bed other than the days I change sheets.

But I also don't like the intrusion of housekeeping coming in. I feel like I need to tidy up, make sure underwear aren't around, etc etc. Plus, I've seen how some resorts (Grand Californian is one example) do the housekeeping thing, with doors WIDE open while they are in OTHER rooms...and that's just frightening.

The mornings we had breakfast in the room, and didn't have to wake up early to get to an EARLY breakfast, or get out at a more normal hour while having blood sugar issues and massive crankiness, THOSE mornings felt like vacation....

I love not having daily housekeeping. It only took one DVC stay for me to realize it's a more peaceful trip if I don't have to worry about getting out of the room, or not returning in the early afternoon, when the housekeeper is cleaning.

Agreed.

OP, if you felt you were lied to about your purchase, make sure you notify DVC about the deceptive practice. They need to fire someone who blatantly lies about the purchase.

Absolutely!

I have to agree! One of the biggest problems I have is there POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. Its horrid! AND I MEAN HORRID!

I'm so sorry you have had such a bad experience. Hasn't been ours, but I'm still sorry.

Towel animals...had NONE during our cash stay at Carib Beach Resort. Had one upon checkin at each of our OKW rooms. None at Jambo (unless you count the octopus-looking thing they did on the tub rim). I found the towel animals to be weird and a bit sad. Looked dusty or something like that, and the creepy eyes they put on ended up wandering around the villa...

I prefer no towel animals!

Yes we got to see the rooms on the tour we took in October, they are very nice. We would like to visit them all again now that we have bought into the club LOL.

We just joined and so far all I can find are negatives?

1. No Mousekeeping everyday - aka no towel animals :-(First of all, we DO get towel animals (not that I care though). As for mousekeeping, I like that I don't have to worry about strangers coming in all the time. I'd much rather leave my things out and choose to make my bed or not, if that's what I choose.
2. Pay in full for DDP at time of bookingThis is new, and not really that different from what others do when they book a hotel package.
3. Pay in full for DCL instead of a deposit, cash and points paid at time of booking.Remember that this is a timeshare. If you book a cruise, that is an exchange OUT of the system. You play a premium for not booking within the system. It is that way with most all timeshares.
4. People who book the same resort at the same time I do with free dining get a better deal. (actually my DVC agent did the math)But in the long run, you get the accommodations cheaper over the life of the contract, so that part is a wash in my book. We find with DVC we really don't find value in the DDP anyway.
5. I dont get to book when I want I have to wait for a window to open up - aka 11 months or 7 monthsYou can book anytime at or after 11 months, but it's true you have to wait for the 7 month window if you are booking other than your home resort. Believe it or not, that is an advantage for you, since it prevents other owners of other resorts from booking up your accommodations before you get a chance.
6. after waiting for my window to open up im not guaranteed the rooms availability I may get put onto a waiting list?? Unless you are booking a room type with low inventory (like concierge at AKV), you will almost never have this issue when booking in your home resort priority period. I've never experienced that in 14 years of membership.
7. points go up every year so eventually the points i purchased wont be enough I will have to purchase more at a higher rate than I have now.Not true. In some instances, points went down in some categories at OKW the first few years of our membership. We also had a decrease in some seasons just this year.
8. $95.00 fee for anything Disney doesnt own so there goes any savings you might get and get this they dont own their own Cruise line!!Also not true. Disney owns the cruise line and the other WDW resorts, but DVC doesn't. DVC is the operative there. If you want the value of what you purchased, you have to stay within the system. If you want to "trade" out of the DVC system, you have to pay to play.
9. Buses come less often (as compared to value resorts) so I would assume they would be more crowded. We usually stay at OKW, and while it's a huge DVC resort, it has excellent bus service. I have no experience with the value resorts, so I can't comment on if it's better or worse, but I can't imagine it being that much better.

SO what exactly am I paying for if I dont have a guarantee of a room when I want to stay and my room doesnt get cleaned every day?
There doesnt seem to be any positives? We are hoping to find some so Please if you have any to offer please do so.

I'm going to address most of your points in another color inside the quote, but I wanted to say that we have owned for 14 years, and I find almost no negatives!

For us the main positives are being able to stay in a "VACATION HOME" instead of a hotel room. I don't want daily housekeeping....I don't have it at home and I don't need it in my vacation home. Leave me alone and let me enjoy my vacation without having to worry about when and if someone is going to pop in to clean.

I love that I can book everything from a studio to a 3 bedroom villa with my points and that I'm not locked into a specific room type or even location like many timeshares are. FYI, I don't think anyone who always books studios gets the true value of DVC or any other timeshare.

I also love that I can share my magical vacation home with friends, and all they have to pay for is their transportation and tickets and food. It's so fun to share our vacation home with our friends when we want company to come along.

I love that I can call and request what I want 11 months ahead. That means I usually have my vacations planned for the entire year, and it's so easy to plan that way. I also like that I don't have to micro-plan our WDW trips anymore either. I just book, show up with my Owner's Locker and have fun. No micro-planning, since I know I'll be back soon!:thumbsup2

Oh, and that $100 off my annual passes is the BEST perk!!!

This happened to me...MyDH & I, (at the time was my fiance), purchased BLT back in december 2008, with little knowledge of all of the "in's & out's" od the memebership...we just knew we LOVED disney and wanted to keep going. My DH is self employed, and DVC forces him to take vacay.....Well, then I found disboards, and began questioning our decision to buy into DVC, based on the negative I was reading on here....But, the more I dug, the more POSITIVES I found...then we took our first ever DVC trip, and forget it: I am in :lovestruc.
Is everything perfect? NO But darn close to it :thumbsup2
LOVE LOVE OUR DVC :yay::yay::yay::cheer2::cheer2:
*I am hoping this happens to you too*

P.S- If you have issues while staying on points, always call MS! We had an issue on our HM, and they graciously went out of their way in away we did not expect. So far, so good!!

The very best of DVC are the one bedroom, two bedroom, tree house villas, and Grand Villas.

If you buy DVC to stay in a studio in my opinion, no it is not worth the cost.

As with all opinions, everyone has one... We only use studios and in MY opinion the 1 bedroom units are the worst value as they suck down so many more points than a studio and they still don't provide my son with a "real" bed which would be the only reason we'd use one... :goodvibes For us, paying rack rate or searching for a deal on an almost $400 / night studio villa makes the DVC studio a true points bargain. We have more space than in a regular hotel room + a kitchenette to use for breakfasts. We've no desire to cook more than breakfasts and no interest in doing laundry. We can vacation for 2 weeks a year in studios but only 1 week in a 1 bedroom. The BEAUTY of DVC is the different units - something for everyone and something for everyone's point budget!!:goodvibes

We always stay in studios, so we may not get the true value of DVC.....but we still love it!!!:) The reason we stay in studios is 1) I don't have a lot of points, so this way I can maximize my points by taking 2, 5night vacations instead of (approx) 1 in a 1 bedroom! and 2) there is only 3 of us. I admit I would love to stay in a 1 br and I will sometime!!:rotfl2: I hear once you stay in a 1 br, it's hard to go back to a studio!:rotfl: Also, I want to add on first, but then add-on itis could take over !!!!

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 I love this perk!!! This is why I need more points, so I can go more and stay longer!!!

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 I agree on all your points in the post! We were posting at the same time! especially the bold one! Although, it is nice to have the option to do laundry if we need to. One time, while staying in a studio I did use the (DVC) publc dryer to dry some things.
