We are coming from Australia in Oct/Nov and were wondering what foods we should try ie KK donuts etc that we don't have in Australia. We have only just got oreos (YUM!) here and want to try other foods. What are Twinkies?? do they have vegemite in the US or Milo? Any other yummy things?? :mickeybar

Hi YoungAussieNurse,

First of all, I hope you will have as great a time here in the States as I had in Australia when I was there!

I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could find vegemite,...but personally, I wouldn't look very far for it! I just don't get vegemite!

Twinkies are evil. :rotfl: They are a completely synthetic food made with fake cakelike material and fake cream. But they are highly addictive and sweet enough that you need to go straight to a dentist.

You'll find lots of yummy goodies at the parks, and all are low-calorie and fat free! ;) Items such as roasted nuts, turkey legs, Mickey ice cream bars, funnel cakes...a complete culinary delight!

Enjoy your trip and have a great time!!

Bob

funnel cakes

ugh... that's all I can think of right now.

you can get Milo in some places but most grocery stores have Ovaltine which is good, but not as good as Milo! (Sigh... I miss Milo)

My rule when traveling abroad with regards to food is...if I haven't seen it before and it doesn't have tentacles, try it!
Do they have the whole coffee drinks thing in Australia? Frozen Carmel Machiattos and the like? If not you should try them, Chocolate, lots of caffeine and sugar in a cup, what's not to love? Jif peanut butter, Twinkies of course, also Ho Hos, Little Debbie Nutty Bars, Iced tea (make sure it is sweetened), Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream (personally I like "Chubby Hubby" and "New York Super Fudge Chunk"). I could go on listing all sorts of wildly addictive, nutritionally worthless junk food but you might think that we American's only eat junk.... :rotfl:

But then you would be more correct than you know!!!

I haven't been to your country (I would LOVE to go), so I am not sure what you might have tried already. Twinkies are wonderful, but my favorite is the chocolate cupcakes, with the same cream filling.

Funnel cakes are awesome too. Nothing but grease, but wonderful.

I think one thing you may find different is that Americans love all of their drinks very cold. We put ice in everything, coffee, tea, milk...... Someone recommended iced tea - I personally like it unsweetened, which is how it usually comes in a restaurant. They will provide sugar or artificial sweetener on the table.

We are a country that really likes to eat, so I am sure you will find plenty that you like.

Boiled Peanuts

Is there anywhere in Orlando you can get boiled peanuts? Cause I sure miss eating them.

I can't think of any place right off-hand but I have seen them at areas where people sell fresh produce (usually at or near gas stations). They can be found in cans at some grocery stores and the Publix (also Super Walmart)here sells bags of them in their produce dept so I would think you could find them in FL too.

In the Magic Kingdom, head to Adventureland and on the right hand is a stand called (?) Aloha Island or something like that. It's pineapple softserve ice cream and boy, are they great, especially on a hot day!!!

Enjoy!!! :teeth:

If you are going to be off site at all, go to a restaurant called Steak & Shake, and order a double cheeseburger, fries and a chocolte malt (or shake). Pure Heaven!

Also, try some Mexican food. I've heard that the Mexican places at Epcot aren't all that good, but be sure to buy a churo. Ask around for good Mexican food offsite.

You can get vegemite here (YUM) but I'd suggest you bring your own in the tube. I prefer Promite myself. I've never seen Milo here (so I order it from Aussie Catalog Co.) Just for giggles, bring some musk sticks and have some unsuspecting Americans try them. :earseek: My friends think I'm so weird eating them! Tastes like a perfume stick :) Don't bother with cookies. Aussie bikkies are so yummy (Tim Tams, Mint Dessert, don't get me started).
How about corn dogs, bagels, jerky, flavored corn chips (lime is good). Try anything that looks different.
Have a great time and expect to go home at least 10lbs heavier. :sad2:

churros are really good! i dont know if they have them at disney or not, they are like cinammion sugar sticks, yum!

I honestly don't know what most of that stuff is!!! (except for the corn dogs, bagels, jerky and corn chips...have never seen lime flavored though!)

They're all Australian goodies (except for the corn dogs, etc.)

Tostitos makes a nice lime flavored tortilla chip (I think it's called Tostitos Hint of Lime). They are widely available in the NYC area.

You must have a hot dog from Casey's on Main Street. Can't get any more American then that!
My absolutely favrite Aussie snack from when we lived there was Violet Crumbles! YUM!

That's very cool. Here in South Carolina, we live off of pineapple and cream cheese sandwiches and Doritos!!

Do you have pancakes and waffles for breakfast in Australia? My DH is from England and they don't eat them there. (They do have something they call pancakes but they are more like French crepes.)

Since coming to the States to live, he has become a big fan of blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup. Waffles are good too -- made from the same batter as pancakes but are cooked in a special device (a waffle iron) that makes them crispy, with lots of indentations to hold the butter and syrup! Pancakes are cooked on a griddle and are soft, like cake.

Don't really have anything else to add (except maybe peanut butter and jelly sandwiches~ sorry, was just on another thread with that one ;) ), but wanted to say how interesting this thread is!

They really don't have pancakes or waffles in Aussie land? You learn something new everyday.

I tried Vegemite once and didn't care for it. I think it was too salty and looked too much like tar! LOL. But that was when I was 18!
