what age should a child stop sucking their thumb???

My dd sucked her thumb only at night. When she was 6 I finally gave up the coaxing part and let her take control of it. I let her pick out bandaids and every night she would put one on the thumb. It took awhile but it eventually worked.

DS sucked his thumb from about 2 weeks old until he was about 10, but only at night from about 5 and he has perfect teeth, did not need braces....DD never sucked her thumb and had braces on at 8, go figure!

Brermom ~ cute ideas on how to get rid of pacifiers....

That is what I need I have two kids that are adicted to thier pacifier. Here is my problem though. DS5 still has his Doc says don't worry aobut it yet as he has had many medical problems (being sick alot and some hospital stays for things that would turn this into a very long post) Anyways he said that with what he has been though it will take longer for him to want to give it up and to just not worry about it. DH hates that he still has it. I tried taking it away and within an hour in goes the thumb. Then I feel like I am trading one problem for another. So do you follow the same rule as thumb sucking and they will give it up when they feel the time is right or do something about it and take it away??

Jodi, did you know that the pacifier fairy makes rare appearances? You have to write a letter and ask her to come since she doesn't "know" that you're ready to give up your pacifiers the way the tooth fairy does. ;) And she usually leaves something special.

Santa will take pacifiers that are left in stockings and will leave a note and a special "big boy" toy.

Make a chart sectioned off for morning, afternoon, and night (a whole day is too much for a little one). For every section of time that he doesn't use his pacifier, he gets a sticker. X number of stickers earns him whatever you've agreed on. Just make "x" a small number to start with. FYI, three stickers equals one Chuck E. Cheese token would work. ;)

TC used the "give it to another baby that needs it" idea.

With our third child, we had lots of pacifiers: one for the car, one for the bed, etc. I bagged them all up and we went shopping. Did you know that you can use one bag of pacifiers to buy one toy? :smooth: It took him about an hour to finally choose - and I can't believe I still remember - a bucket of playdough complete with toys. I got off easy! ::yes:: The idea worked great, though. No tears, and only one question later about them. We made the mistake of checking out with a very young cashier that was really confused and not a kid-person, though. We were the only ones in line, so it wasn't like she was rushed. She didn't say one word to him. If I had to do over, I'd check out with a "grandma" type. She actually asked me in front of him if I wanted the pacifiers back.

Can you tell I had fun with this?

i dont remember how old i was, but i was old. I needed braces from it because i guess the tongue forms teeth... news to me... and with the thumb in the way the were all messed up.
