I've been glued to this forum since booking our first cruise on the Fantasy Oct 2013. I recognise from everyones posts how hard working and wonderful the DCL crew is. Just wondering....where do the sleep/dine/hang out? Is there a whole other area of the ship for them that we don't see??? Does the Captain ever get to sleep?? It seems like the crew works all night and day! or do they work in shifts?

:rotfl::rotfl2::lmao:

The crew do work long hours. A 70 hrs a week minimum contract is the norm, but overtime is expected when necessary or available.

"Most" Crew on the classic's live on Deck A or B (the ones under Deck 1).
A small amount of those cabins (not Staterooms! :rotfl2:) have portholes for Officer status CM's.
A few Crew that are Officers get Deck 1 Starboard cabins, and there are a few Crew Cabins in the Forward part of Deck 2 past the Guest Staterooms.
The really high up Officers like the Cruise Director, Hotel Director, Captain etc have Staterooms (not Cabins! :rotfl2:) on Guest Decks.
The Crew have an Officer's Mess, and a Crew Mess on Deck 1 Aft, along with a Officers Bar and a Crew Bar (Classics).
They also have a Crew Gym, Library and on the Classic's, they have Deck 5 forward at the bow of the ship.

There is a small town below decks, sleeping, eating, relaxing and having a great time when off stage!

This is weird to me. I mean, if I were the captain I would want my room away from guests. Are they standard staterooms?

Being near the Bridge is kinda important! He is responsible for the vessel and needs to be near the helm lol!

Not standard Staterooms, Captain has more of a Suite.
The CD and HD have very large Staterooms as well on the Aft on the classics.

The greyed out area's are there due to not being Guest Staterooms.

I never said he should be far from the bridge. Only that it is odd he would be near guest rooms. My thinking is he would want to be somewhere quieter. Being able to rest and sleep when needed is important when you are responsible for the vessel.

When the Guest Staterooms go far Forward on Decks 7 & 8 on the Classic's, not a lot of space for him to have a Stateroom anywhere else isolated but nearby!

Fascinating! Thanks for posting. While on the Dream last month, my wife and I struck up a conversation with a CM who was a dancer in the shows and worked with guest activities. She said her room was on the 3rd deck near the Walt Disney theater.

I should have stated that the deck's and cabin positions I was speaking about were Classic ships only, but the facilities are the same.

Sorry MDN.

Captains are not always on or near the Bridge. However they are always in close comunication with the Bridge watch. The Duty Officer would always be calling the Master in plenty of time if a situation, traffic or navigation wise reqiured his attendance on the bridge.

The Master is on the bridge when leaving or entering port...........tricky navigation areas........heavy traffic and bad weather.........IE FOG!

Each Master has a book on the bridge that clearly lists his standing reqiurements/orders of the duty officer/bridge watch for just about any situation that could develop. In addition their are night orders which the Master would enter any specail requirments each night. Each Officer that comes on watch signs the night order book to show he has read the orders and understands them.

The most important order is the last...*Call me whenever in Doubt!*::yes::

I would love to know more about the accommodations for the "important people."

Are they allowed to have their families with them? What would their kids do for school?

I cannot speak for the cruise industry, but in the regular Merchant Marine, most companies/lines permit the vessel Officers to bring their Wifes/families with them for a limited amount of time each year.

no schooling.the kids come when Mom and Dad think is ok.

I don't know about the captain, but for Cruise Directors, most can have their wives and children on board. So long as there is space in their cabin.(queen bed and a couch). I would assume it's the same for most officers. pirate:

I thought it was sad that on the new ships they removed the crew's pool to make way for the teen club. As big as that ship is, you would think they could accommodate both. Now the crew have no outdoor "hang out" place

On our Baltic Cruise the captain's family was on board, and we got to meet and spend a whole day with them (captain and family)during a day long excursion at St Petersburg. We were delayed at some points but the whole bus know that the ship is not leaving without the captain :rotfl2:

We were on the Dream last week and asked a crew member that spent many years on the Wonder about the crew pool going away. He said it was too far to get to from the crews' quarters and the show performers were really the only ones to use it.
