What About My LIPSTICK???

Hello,
I've been paying attention to everything that's been going on with the new carry-on rules,
but something hit me today as I was applying my lipstick for the 50th time.....
Oh My God, what am I going to do if they won't let me take my lipstick on the plane?!?!?!?!?!

So, fellow travelers, if you have traveled within the past month or so, what did you do about your lipstick???
(P.S. I know it is vain, but I am also addicted to lipstick. It is an actual addiction. My lips suffer without something on them. )

What can I do???? :guilty:

TECHNICALLY solid lipsticks are allowed. That said, the individual TSA agents seem to be able to do whatever they want regarding confiscating items. I'd make sure it's a cheap tube that you take with you and hope they don't take it. (pack the good stuff in your checked bag) Drink lots of water during the flight - that will help your lips not become so dry.

I took on a couple almost empty tubes the other day and they didn't bat an eyelash at them, or the packet of handcream, or the mascara.

They seemed much more interested in the economy sized bottle of Dollar Store shampoo the lady in front of me had in her carry-on. I mean really, why on earth would anyone take up the carry-on space with a quart of shampoo, and how on earth could anyone not see the news or read the signs that liquid of any size is not allowed.

Can't help you as far as your addiction goes. :thumbsup2

But to find out the official story on what is allowed, go to www.tsa.gov shortly before your trip.

I took on my lipstick with no problem but had to put my eye drops in my checked luggage.

I really recommend that those of you who are unsure check out the appropriate link for your country's agency, such as www.tsa.gov or www.catsa.ca. They list the items which are allowed in both carry on and checked luggage. The lists are very clear, and it just takes some common sense to figure out what is acceptable.

Note that these items DO vary between the US and Canada, for those flying from Canada the rules are a little more strict.

I'm not trying to push off your question, but there is so much misinformation flying around, and I frankly wouldn't go to a Disney website for the final word. If I did want to check out a bulletin board, I'd at least go to flyertalk.com's Safety and Security forum where you'll find anecdotal evidence from frequent fliers.

For those of you who are nervous about flying, consider takinga trip to your local airport to check out the check in area etc so that you can get a feel for things before you fly. Then try and relax and not stress too much over too many details.

So long as you minimize the items on your person and in your carryon which may create problems, and don't try and sneak items past TSA/CATSA, and understand that you will need to remove your shoes, jacket, and laptop and place them through the scanner, you'll be fine.....

Flying really isn't that stressful, so long as you stay flexible and don't let minor hiccups upset you.

According to TSA's site, up to 4 oz. of eyedrops should have been permitted. :confused3

I'm flying on Tuesday. In addition to our prescription meds, I'm going to try to slide by with over-the-counter nasal spray for my sinuses. It's under the 4 oz. limit so I'm hoping it'll be OK. I'm also hoping to bring a solid stick of sunscreen. I am putting the sunscreen lotion in my checked luggage.

I agree that if you bring lipstick, make it an inexpensive stick. That way, it's no great loss if you have to discard it.

That's my point exactly. Based on the TSA website solid lipstick is allowed. (not gloss or gell though) but the TSA agents seem to remove whatever THEY deem unfit regardless of what's on (or not on) the list. Go figure!

Exactly.
I saw a woman the other night, going through security, she must have had( I was adding in my head) $300. worth of Chanel makeup, taken away from her.
I'm thinking to myself, you don't read the paper or watch the news.

My (international) airport has giant posters outside and inside, and on the doors, with life size, actual packaging of banned items (ie Colgate tubes, hairspray, lotion, etc) stuck to the posters....

doesn't seem to make much impact - I don't know how much more clear they can be. The posters are in at least 4 languages.

I've been through security 7 times since the new rules started, all 7 times my lipstick went through. My bag was even handchecked once at the gate and the TSA guy looked at the 3 lipsticks in my bag and didn't say anything. Just last week I discovered a small bottle of eyeglass cleaner in my laptop bag that went through 3 or 4 times without detection. I did get busted on a half empty bottle of water that I accidentally left in my tote bag.

Interesting to hear your mascara made it even though it's on "the list"!
IMO - I can't figure how a tube of mascara can be a threatening substance - unless the person who wants to use the contents has a sledgehammer to crack open the plastic case!

Solid lipstick is allowed. I flew this morning from Las Vegas to Detroit.

Thanks for the replies...
It really aggravates me how every time someone tries to pull off a murderous act, every innocent American has to pay.
Not to start trouble, but terrorists want to take away our every day freedoms.... it seems to me they're on their way to doing that, chipping it away a little at a time.
Instead of taking away ladies' make-up, eye drops, water bottles, why don't they just start the stupid profiling? It works for EtAl Airlines :confused3

Before my last trip I took a ride over to the airport to talk with the security people about security procedures. Next week I'm going to be taking another ride to ask more questions, just to be sure. Thanks!

Flying is subject to the rules of the FAA. You have the freedom to purchase a ticket and by doing so tacitly agree to follow the rules.
Not all terrorists are foreign. Profiling is totally Un American and a total breach of our liberties. Besides, they may decide all women who apply lipstick 50x's a day need to be profiled, would you like that? Or, they may decide that mother's with infants are a risk. Once you start profiling, you are providing a steady downward spiral, but, of course, if you are not one that would be profiled, you would not care, UNTIL you fell into one of the slots. ETAL is not an American company, they do not share the same democracy that we have.
Every action has a reaction. You have an accident, your premiums go up.
Have a hurriane, your premiums go up. Have a high crime area near you and your premiums go up, that is unfair to the folks that are honest.
Life is not always fair, if you wish to participate, even after the actions of a few, then you need to go with the flow.
The terrorists could care less about your freedoms. They are all about inflicting terror and destruction. The TSA is all about protecting us, the results are debatable, but, they do try.
Lipstick is allowed, according to the list, you will be fine.

Probably because it is liquid and stuff to make a bomb could be put in it. Same as any other liquid. Small explosion to be sure, but, it could be nasty.

AHAHA! I also forgot about the eyeglass cleaner in my glass case, and the lens cleaner in my camera bag--that bag is so full of bizarre stuff that they were probably more wondering about the eight various sized water bottle caps and six large clear plastic bags rather than looking at things in plain sight. (BTW those items are critical to me for the type of photography I do, but for the average photographer they would be meaningless.) They seemed more intent on finding a lighter that they claim to have seen but couldn't find because it wasn't there.

But it's not liquid--it's more like the consistency of paste--not glue--paste. Liquid is something that pours, mascara can barely be squeezed. My mascara is about the same consistency as my lipstick. As usual, no common sense at the TSA.

Anne

Not to mention that the amount of mascara in the tube is almost always less than about 1/3 of an oz.

As Marvin the Martian once said, "Where's the kaboom?"

I use Estee Lauder and it more liquid than others I have used. Ok, mascara is sort of pasty and we know that paste is not allowed. :) I don't know if it can be squeezed or not, the tube is not squeezable. Common sense and the TSA are oxymorons. Right up there with military intelligence.
