Our first trip with kids!
The Cast:
Me: Turning 34 years old on this trip! Planner, doer, go getter, early bird, out going, loud and funny
DH: 34, wonderful, patient, hard working, quiet (helps calm down a hyper wife) loves WDW as much as I do, strong arms to carry a 3 year old when she is too tired to move, will do anything for his DW
DNiece #1: Adrianna, 10 years old, never been to WDW, loves her little sister more than anything in the world (proved to be very helpful to me on this trip she is like a little mother), favorite characters are the Princesses and Tinkerbell.
DNiece #2: Kayla, will turn 4 this New Years Eve, never been to WDW, very well behaved, loves anything her big sister loves, can bat her huge brown eyes and pout her lips and DH will cave every time, favorite character is Ariel from Little Mermaid, Donald Duck and Minnie Mouse.
DH and I go to WDW all the time since we are fortunate to live 3 hours south of the most wonderful place on earth. We have never gone with small children as we do not have any of our own dont know why this blessed event has not happened for us yet and the only thing I can say to this to make myself feel better is that I need to be patient and wait and see what comes our way. Maybe parenthood will be in the future for us or maybe we will just be the best aunt and uncle any kid could ever ask for.
I always wondered what it would be like to experience WDW through the eyes of a young child. I love seeing families having a great time, I love talking to the kids in line for a ride, busses or monorails . This past Christmas the monorails were packed and this little girl, about 5, asked to sit on my lap (I was going to give her my seat but she said she wanted to be higher up to see out the window). I looked at her mom and she nodded her ok. The little girl struck up a conversation with me and before you know it her family got off the monorail and she was on her way. I had this empty feeling, looked at DH and said Do you think the girls are old enough yet??
The girls are my sisters 2 daughters. Adrianna is 10 and Kayla is almost 4. Ive been wanting to take them with us for a while now but my sister wanted to wait until Kayla was older and I would never take one niece without the other. My sister is a hard working single mother and I do not know how she does it on her own, I am so proud of her. The only thing I do not like about her is SHE DOESNT LIKE WDW!! I know what you are thinking, are you sure we are even related?? We went as kids with our aunt and uncle and she was miserable with a capital M! Now, she loves the Disney Store and the movies, her house has a lot of Disney stuff and her Christmas tree has a ton of Disney ornaments but she doesnt like the World itself .she says it is the heat, the crowds and the walking . We decided in December of 2005 that we would bring the girls for our October trip. We told my sister and she said that would be fine but please lets keep it a secret so the girls dont drive me up a wall for the next 10 months!! (Now remember, it was her idea to keep it a secret!)
Once she gave me the go ahead I went into planning overload. I knew we would go to the MNSSHP, the girls have a lot of costumes from the Disney store so I knew I would not have to purchase a costume for them. I spent countless hours on this board getting hints and suggestions and just asking many questions (thanks for everyones help). Since the girls are picky eaters (pizza, chicken fingers etc) we decided not to do any character dinners but decided on the breakfast instead since they are big bacon and pancake eaters. Ok what character meals to choose? I went round and round on this and must have changed my plans a million times. I wanted to have everything set when I called on my 180 days in advance date. We settled in on Chef Mickeys for my birthday dinner, Crystal Palace at 8:05 am and PSB at 8:35 am. I booked the ASMO because I thought they would get a big kick out of the décor and themeing but later changed to the POR because the AP rate was cheaper than the ASMO and we got a refrigerator to boot! Since the kids like to eat the minute their little eyes open we though this would work out well, bring some cereal and milk to tide them over until we went out for our real breakfast.
So resort is booked, dining reservations are made, MNSSHP tickets are purchased as soon as they went on sale and the tickets are purchased. We are ready to go! But wait, we have to wait until my birthday! Bummer, I want to go now. I talk about our plans non stop to anyone that will listen, I lurk on the boards, I watch the planning video once a week I want to go NOW! You would think that after going so often I would not be this excited but I am taking kids this time!! This is going to ROCK!
I see the kids all the time, they come over on the weekend, sometimes they sleep over. We meet at the mall or hook up for a pizza. All the time I am asking them questions in code like what is your favorite movie, character, etc etc. Wouldnt you like to go to WDW one day? Maybe your mom will take you etc etc. I am ready to burst, I want to tell them so bad but one look from my sister tells me to zip it!
So August rolls around and then the worst thing happens, you cannot believe it my sister opened her big mouth and blabbed that we were going to take the girls for my birthday! Now remember, she is the one who said we need to keep this a secret! Here is how it happened:
When my aunt and uncle took us in 1984/85 we were 14 and 10 years old (I am the oldest) and my aunt taped our vacation. My mom found the VHS tape and had it transferred to a DVD. She mailed one to me and one to my sister. Well DS played it with the kids and they had a great time making fun of us with our white sunglasses, high top neon Reeboxs, Jams shorts etc . the girls said they wanted to go to Disney and DS blurted out the big secret that I have been keeping for 8 months now! If you knew me you would understand that keeping a secret is not something I am good at well I am if it is one of those secrets but an exciting secret is hard!! I was ready to strangler her. The girls call me to confirm the truth, yes we are taking you to WDW in October! They scream, they laugh and they ask a skazillion questions!
The next weekend is their mothers birthday so we agree to watch them for the weekend while she goes out with friends. We watch the planning videos over and over again (boy am I glad I saved them throughout the years) and they loved it. They are super excited about the MNSSHP and cannot decide which costume to bring they want to bring them all! This becomes a trend over the next few months they come to my house and watch the planning video and other Disney videos to refresh our memory about the characters and such. We discuss the pressed penny machines, the pin trading craze, the charm bracelets, EVERYTHING! They love going on the computer and looking at the websites the little one wants to see pictures of all the characters and tells me which ones she will hug and which ones she will kiss (hug the boys and kiss the girls) etc etc. The little one is so cute, everyone she talks to she has to tell them that Uncle Todd is taking me to see Mickey Mouse! She tells her day care teacher, her neighbors, my neighbors, her grandfather and the guy at the gas station (basically anyone that says hi to her will have to hear how she is going to see Mickey Mouse. The older one is concerned that she will want too much stuff and it will not fit in my car ha ha!
