My Nephew made his First Communion on Saturday night. We typically try to avoid things on that side of the family but DD and I went. My 1st grade teacher is his 2nd grade teacher and she came over for dinner after Mass. My Dad and Step-mom, who also try to avoid those family functions, went as well because, well, they are the Grandparents. I found out that my Dad's first job was working for my 1st grade teacher's Dad so our families have been "connected" for 50 years.

We were talking about the thing we remembered from school. I actually had her for 1/2 day for kindergarten and then again in 1st grade (instead of moving me full time to 1st grade because kindergarten was too easy-I went 1/2 day to 1st grade in October or so). The first day she was quizzing me and another student about letter sounds. I could read but I didn't really know what she was talking about so I just nodded when the other girl said things so we both go put into the top class.

I also told her about one day, it was Valentine's Day as a matter of fact, she had to go somewhere so during Mass the other 1st grade teacher was watching our class and we were told in no uncertain terms that we were NOT to leave our seats... well the little boy next to me started throwing up so I went back to get the other teacher. I got back to class and the other teacher told MY teacher that I left my seat, but never told her why, so I had to sit through the WHOLE Valentines party with my head down on my desk. She apologized and invited me to the party in her class next winter :lmao::lmao::lmao:

What a fun night :thumbsup2

So, what memories have stuck with you from 1st grade all these years?

My favorite 1st grade memory was our patriotic play. My best friend and I were both Betsy Ross and had to recite a poem. I still have a copy of a picture of the two of us in our bonnets and shawls-- and she is still my very best friend!

Is it me or is that 'other' teacher a butt for not explaining the situation?!

Ahh first grade...yes I remember holding on to the bumper of my mothers car so she wouldn't leave me there. LOL.

It was also the year I got glasses. Oh joy! The school nurse had me look into this machine. She said here is a picture of a picnic table...Is the red apple on the picnic table or off the picnic table? I said Picnic table? And it was Four Eyes from then on.

Yeah first grade. Good times.

My first grade story...

I got to be line leader the day we went on a field trip to the apple orchard to pick apples.

I'm up in front of the line, all excited, and my teacher looks down at me and immedately sends me to the nurse?!

I had pink eye. No being the line leader for me. :rotfl2:

BTW, I was the kid who threw up at the Valentines day party in Kindergarten. I haven't ever really eaten sweets since then.

I remember they grouped you in reading groups. Of course the top group was the Jet's. I remember working so hard to get into the Jet group. For the life of me I can't remember the name of my reading group, but I knew in first grade, I didn't belong in the group the nun put me in. I had 30 kids in my class and we were with the 2nd grade class of 30. I have no idea how the nun taught 60 kids in one day. But apparently the nun knew how to seperate people into reading groups. I know many of these people that were in the Jet's, and they are now Dr's, lawyer's and engineers.

The funny thing was that she was the "favored" 1st grade teacher-I didn't get it then and I still don't :lmao:

Our reading groups were the puppies and the kitties--the puppies being the higher group :dog2:

My first grade story....

Mom was in line to pick me up at carpool and she caught me flipping off a 6th grader. She had no idea what it meant and neither did I, but she knew it was bad. I just saw the big kids doing it and knew it was mean. She went home and asked my Dad what it meant . :rotfl:

I learned that day to never do it again haha, well as long as Mom wasn't looking . ;)
