Signed up for harv and marv whale-watching boat tour in Juneau, but thinking of signing up for Bering Sea in Ketchikan. Has anyone done both and found that the boat tours were simply variations on a theme and too similar? Not interested in the dinner with the crew option for Bering Sea.

We saw a lot of whales from the ship. Personally the glaciers at Juneau are very spectacular and I wouldn't be doing two similar boats.

We've done whale watching with Harv and Marv twice and loved it both times. It is a very intimate experience as there are very few people on the boat. There is a recent thread here and has someone's pictures form their tour with them and they are beautiful. Ketchikan, we did a float plane over the Misty Fjords with Island Wings. The owner, pilot is Michelle and has been flying for years. At one point she lands the plane in a small lake and we got out by the bank. Amazing experience.

Enjoy your cruise!

I've done both whale watching in Juneau and the Bering Sea Crab boat. They are VERY different tours, you will not think on the second one "boy, we just did this". On the whale watching, you are caught up in the scenery until you find a whale -- then it is all about wildlife viewing. On the crab boat tour, it is all about the crew explaining how crab boats operate, the different types of crabs (and you get to see them pull in the net for several varieties and see the crabs up close). While you can view the scenery while the crab boat moves from spot to spot, you don't go too far and it more about the activities then the scenery. (We didn't do the dinner option either and when we were done with the tour, we were glad we didn't. The tour was nice but it was very nice to also have some time to do something else downtown.)
