We've decided on a motorhome

We've made a decision. We are buying a 1994 Rexhall Airex. It is 34 feet, is a wide body and has some features we really like for the 2 of us. It has 24,000 miles on it, which concerned me. I found out it was run every year though, and it currently runs great. The guy who owns it has been rather pro-active in keeping it in great shape. (OK, he was anal about it) He just put new tires all the way around too. I like the living room. It has a sofa bed and a loveseat that both pull out and face forward and back, not on the sides. There is a table that can be put in between also. The kitchen wraps around and has a side-by-side fridge/freezer...it's huge! The clincher was a king size bed in back. Everything works and we are soooo looking forward to getting to the fort. We might take a short week in december if we can manage it. Thanks to everyone for their info on motorhomes. I kept it in mind while searching for the right one. Btw the cost was 12K, which didn't seem too bad for it. We pick it up tomorrow! Yea!

That is very sweet! I remember seeing that model at an RV show in Tampa back in the 90's. Rexhall's were very nice RV's. It's a MAJOR plus that the tires are brand new, too! Saves you a lot of hassles. Looks like the previous owner babied it - which is also an advantage to you.

Now - What the heck are you doing on the boards? Get out there & do some camping!!!

Oh we will be camping the rest of the summer into October. Our plan is to live in the motorhome for 6 months a year for the next 2 years then off to warmer places...like Orlando area for winters. Come back up to Iowa pick up some grandkids and travel a bit during the summers. The motorhome drives great too. I just have to get used to how to place it in the lane. My wife says I was hugging the right edge of the road. I'll get it figured out.

From the passenger side, that's exactly what it looks like.

I took the driving course at Lazy Days last summer and the instructor said to keep your eyes up and ahead, not down at the road in front of you. By doing that, you will automatically center yourself in the lane. It works like a charm for me. You can also judge where you are at in the lane by using the bottom convex side mirrors. Adjust those so that you are able to see any cars coming along side of you and in doing so, you will see the lane stripes on the highway. Just glance from time to time to get your bearing. You'll be a pro in no time!!

The only thing the driving course did not give was hands on training for backing. They taught the theory, but we did not physically back the coach. They let us practice driving & turning in a 40' diesel MH. My DH has since taught me how to back, but I wouldn't want to try it without a spotter - especially at the Fort. Too many obstacles! I'm now comfortable driving the MH & felt the compulsion to learn how to do it "just in case".
