I proposed to my DF on her birthday, this past June 15th. Here's the recap, photos, & a link to the video:
RECAP
The night before we left for our trip, I talked over my plan to my bro & sis. My sis agreed to take the ring in her carry-on, and go over to another security line so my then-DGF would have no possibility of seeing anything. Once we got to the hotel, I got the ring from her, and the t-shirt from my luggage, and hid both of them in my bro's room. When my DF went to go do something (at this point, I can't remember) I hid the ring in the safe, and kept the key with me the entire time.
The following morning, 6/15, the nerves started. I was mostly concerned with how I was going to talk to a cast member without DF knowing. So, we left for MK without the ring/t-shirt (since we knew we'd be going back to the room before the night). We got there and went to the Bakery to get some breakfast (and as I'm typing this, I realize the humor in that we ate breakfast at the bakery...more on that later). Afterwards, as we were walking out of the Bakery deciding what we were gonna go do, I told the group I had a stomach-ache I needed to find a restroom. Of course, my DF said the same, so I told my siblings to wait for us in the Emporium. While walking to the restroom (which are conveniently located next to City Hall), I told DF I was feeling really sick, so if she was out before me, to just meet my siblings in the Emporium. She agreed, and walked into the restroom, at which point I ran backwards towards City Hall.
Once inside, I went up to a CM, Patrick (who is a certified SAINT and deserves almost all the credit for the success of my proposal), and told him my plan. I couldn't tell what he was thinking, but a near-by female CM who was listening-in on the conversation started getting all excited. Well, Patrick said he wasn't sure how it could be done, but advised me to get seats early for the parade, then to meet him back at City Hall around 8:00p to discuss further details. While I'm usually someone who panics over little details all the time, I trusted Patrick a lot and agreed, without knowing what would happen. I thanked him for his time, and headed back to meet my group.
The day was nice - we hit-up all 3 mountains, Buzz, and a few other rides by 1:30p, which is when we headed back to the hotel to rest-up for the evening (thank goodness my DF likes to take naps). While we were getting ready to go back out, I snuck the ring and t-shirt into my backpack for the night ahead.
When we got back to the park, my DF & I waited in like to get our bags checked. I jumped outta my line and ahead to another quickly showed them what I had, and he nodded and let me in. A few seconds later my DF came in and we all headed into the park.
At this point I should mention something - it was raining when we got back to the MK. Raining. A lot! But somewhere in me, I knew that it would hold up. When we headed in it was still drizzling, and kept doing so until around 7:45p (when we decided to sit for the parade). So we went to sit, and my bro, sis, & sis's BF went to look at shops, which left DF & I to save our spots. So right at 8:00p, I told DF that I wasn't feeling well again, and that I needed to run to the bathroom. She agreed to watch our spots, and I ran off. About halfway to City Hall, I was struck with panic - I had left my backpack, with the t-shirt & ring WITH MY DF!!! I didn't know how I could run back to get the bag without being suspicious, but was terrified at the idea of her opening the bag to look for something, and finding that. In the end, I decided to have faith a hope she didn't look in the bag (which she didn't). I got to City Hall, and asked for Patrick.
"Patrick's not here right now."
WHAT?!?!?!? Well, where is he?
"I'm not sure, let me see if I can find out."
At this point, I was sure I really WAS gonna be sick! Then another CM came by, I guess saw the look on my face, and asked if they could help me. I asked if they knew where Patrick was and the CM was like "Oh, he's just outside handing out bracelets for Magic Hours. So I booked outside to find him.
I ran up to him, and he was like "yes?" I told him I talked to him earlier and he gave me the deer-in-headlights stare. I mentioned my proposal, and instantly . He immediately handed everything he was doing to two other CMs to help me (again, I cannot stress how helpful Patrick was!). We started walking, and the conversation went like this (Patrick, ME):
Where does she think you are?
Bathroom.
She bought that?
She had no choice - she the only one saving out spots.
Nice. Okay, where are you sitting?
Right in front of the Bakery on Main St.
Good location! What does she look like? What is she wearing?
((At this point I showed him a picture I took of us, so he would know what outfit she had on too))
Great! This makes it easy..okay, now to find another CM who'll be working the parade route.
((He found one, but he wasn't gonna be in the right location))
Okay, well, this is what we'll do. You go back and sit down by her. I'll walk by and see where you're sitting and go find the CM that'll be in your area. I'll let them know what you're looking to do (my original plan) and then I'll give you a sign that we're all set.
Really? That's it? How will I know when it's gonna happen?
You'll know.
Is it gonna be sooner or later?
Around 8:50pm.
Perfect! Thank you SOOO much, Patrick!
((At this point I headed back to my seat))
While sitting there, I watched Patrick and various CMs walk past and gather at different points, chatting and casually looking my way. My DF was oblivious. The only thing she mentioned was that a lot of CMs noticed her birthday pin and wished her a happy birthday. I thought that would work nicely in with my plan (and it did).
Well, after a couple of passes, Patrick and another CM, Al (who was the man-in-charge during the proposal itself) passed by, both giving my the thumbs up - I nodded slightly, and they did as well, and kept walking. Then, another CM went to talk to the PhotoPass photographer that was set-up in-front of us, taking pics of people on Main St. in from of the castle. The photographer nodded, and looked over at me. Shortly after all this, around 8:45p, the fun began.
I looked down Main St. and started noticing about a dozen CMs gathering and chatting in the street. Then, I looked at the photographer, and he was denying people photos, while taking his camera off his tripod. Then he looked over at me, nodded as if it tell me "it's time", which is when I noticed the large group of CMs awkwardly moving our way. Again my DF was oblivious to all of this (which surprised me!). Well, all the sudden Al was standing in front of my DF and screamed "Well, I've heard we have a very special birthday here today. Today is D_______'s birthday! Let's all sing to her. At which point he helped her up, and she gave me a look like "I'm gonna kill you!" (she later admitted that she thought is was happening because all the CMs noticed her pin while she was sitting there, and that I pointed it out to more while she wasn't looking).
Okay, so she's up, and in Main St. being sung the birthday song by 12 CMs and pretty much 1/2 of Main St. The CMs were doing a great job a hamming it up, totally embarrassing her - but she was loving it, and looking around at everyone singing. And when the go to the last "Happy Birthday, to yoooou!" I snuck around the side of her, pulled out the ring, and got down on one knee. As I was standing up, I could hear people starting to gasp and shriek, because I think they knew what was coming. Anyway, I got down on one knee, and she instantly covered her mouth and started shaking. Then I said the five most important words in my life: D_______, will you marry me?!
She immediately started shaking her head yes, as I got up to give her a kiss and a hug. As I backed away to look at her, one of the CMs asked "Did she say yes?!" I told him yes, and they all went nuts, waving their light-sticks and hollarin'. I put the ring on her finger, and then Al surprised us by handing us Mickey top-hat ears & veil ears - something I knew nothing about! So while we were putting those on, a few guys CMs said that had another song to sing, at which point they started belting out "You are so BEAUTIFUL to ME (and him)" It was a really funny moment. Then I gave her the t-shirt and she put it on, we took a few more pics, and thanked all the CMs that sang. After that, we sat down to enjoy the parade.
Okay, so remember how I said I world with someone who's daughter worked at MK? Well, she was actually a character in Spectro (one of the dragonflies). During the parade, she came by, saw us and congratulated us. She also said we should keep our eyes open throughout the parade. What I didn't know was that she told other characters about us, and the would come over to congratulate or gesture to us. It was a great touch!
After the parade, while waiting for fireworks, we started calling our families, who were all thrilled. Surprisingly, neither my DF or I cried during the actual proposal (probably because it happened to quick), but while talking to families & friends, we lost it. We finished our phone calls right before the fireworks started. And everyone was right - it was better to do it all before the fireworks. It was really romantic to be able to watch them together as an engaged couple!
After the fireworks show, we headed back to City Hall to get out extra Magic Hours wristbands and to find Patrick. We did both, and couldn't stop thanking him. He explained that he had proposed just 3 weeks earlier, and knew how important that moment was, and was happy to help. We told him we also lucked-out because we got PhotoPass pics too. He asked us if we had a chance to see them yes, and we said no. So he goes behind the counter in City Hall, pulls out the memo-pad thing, writes a bunch on it and hands it to me. On top of everything that he had already done for me, he was also giving me a coupon for a free 5"x7" pic. I thanked him a million more times, and asked if there was anything at all I could do for him. He shook his head, and said he just liked making magic happen. Again, this man is awesome!
PHOTOS
Our first pic of the trip, waiting to take off.
We're weird kids.
I used this photo to show the CMs what D looked like that day.
Here's D waiting for the parade, with her birthday pin facing out (I insisted on it!).
My best friend (just before the proposal).
Here's where they stood her up and started singing the birthday song.
THE MOMENT (I look goofy cause I was fighting back tears).
Me laughing while the CMs sang "You are so beautiful to me!"
Our pic on Main St. right after the proposal.
D with her ears and the t-shirt!
On the monorail back to the car, D showing off her bling.
A trip like this really makes a girl tired.
We were sad to go home.
