We're Still Hungry! A DDW July Getaway - 8/5 Complete!

I think you have hit the nail squarely on the head here, as this explains perfectly our difference of opinion. California Grill is a restaurant in which my entire family has found at least one thing that they really enjoy and that is why, for us, CA Grill is "golden". ;) Two of my kids now love the filet with teriyaki barbecue sauce and DH really enjoys the pork tenderloin. While I didn't really care for either of these, I found that I do very much like the rock shrimp salad. And then there is DD1 who really enjoys their sushi rolls. Plus of course, we have all liked the various flatbreads and different versions of the lava cake that we have had. Does our list of favorites sound familiar??? Yep, its almost identical to your list of items that either no longer excite you or maybe never did. While we tend to find our favorites and then stick to them, you like to take risks and try new things. Which, by the way, is exactly why I love your reviews. :thumbsup2

So for your sake, I hope that along with the new look of the restaurant, they also add some innovative, new dishes which will again excite your more advanced palate. However, I also hope that all of our old favorites are still on the menu as well. Otherwise there is going to be at least one person in my family who is going to be very disappointed. ;)

While this sounds totally unappealing to me and one of only a couple of entrees that I myself would not have ordered from the current Jiko menu, I am strangely looking forward to your review of those head-on prawns. :rotfl2:
I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens with this refurbishment - I'm sure plenty of dishes will stay, but there's so much potential for change! As far as I'm concerned, the steak, pork, and a few other classics can remain the same (they wouldn't be my choices either, but people have loved those dishes forever), but maybe they'll be more experimental when it comes to seafood, sushi, desserts, etc. Life would be a lot easier if I could find a dish I simply love and never get tired of. But I'm glad to hear you don't mind the volatility of my food consumption patterns. :rotfl:

I'm sure the excitement level of your review will not be a problem regardless of where you eat (or eat again). I know this because you have somehow made eating a kid's meal at the Contempo sound pretty darn good. :lmao:
I'm so happy to hear that. I'm not even kidding - I was very happy with that breakfast. It sure beat paying $7 for an adult platter with foods I didn't want to eat (biscuit, bacon, potatoes, etc). :thumbsup2

Yes, I agree about the Tonga Toast...not really my thing. But the pancakes, on the other hand.

Oh man, I wish I could be there too!!! If you do get together, you must promise me that you will take pictures...and not just of your food/beverages. :rotfl:

Perhaps you could meet at Kona for breakfast and share an order of pancakes??? :lmao:
A Kona Cafe breakfast meet would be so fun! I don't really care where we would meet, but at least this way we wouldn't end up wasting a perfectly good Kona breakfast. :rotfl:

Just finished watching the incredible Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics, so it's time for a DHS update!

At the end of my breakfast review, I was waiting patiently for DHS to open. Sure enough, we began going through the turnstiles at about 8:50, and I headed straight down Sunset Boulevard to be the first person on Rock n’ Roller Coaster.

Of course, it was closed due to technical difficulties.

So instead, I went to Tower of Terror instead and still made it on the first elevator of the day. ToT is so beautifully themed.

IMG_4434.jpg

In between some rides on Tower of Terror, Rock n’ Roller Coaster, and one trip to Star Tours, I decided to take a look at some of the food and merchandise.

Sweet Spells is a neat villain-themed store combining some exciting characters and tasty treats.

IMG_4437.jpg

Maleficent!

Scar

IMG_4442.jpg

And the biggest villain of all: the carrot cake cookie  (I thought this was only available at Writer’s Stop - I guess this means it’s less elusive now!)

IMG_4440.jpg

Guess what? They were offering free samples of the carrot cake cookie! I opted for a sample instead of buying a whole one. I haven't bought this dessert in years (since I didn't remember loving it), but it was delicious - maybe next time I'll cave.

IMG_4439.jpg

Some new snacks that I’ve noticed around WDW are “Mad Treats”. These are themed to Alice in Wonderland, and they seem to complement the “Mad T Party” nighttime event at California Adventure.

Vintage Donald!

IMG_4446.jpg

Por favor, manténgase alejado de mi café!

IMG_4448.jpg

Starring Rolls was also on my window shopping list.

The Banana Split dessert has a new look. It used to look like this (which I think is a bit more appealing).

IMG_4459.jpg

The new carrot cupcake looks very…bright.

IMG_4462.jpg

Of all the snacks at Starring Rolls, I think this napoleon looked best.

IMG_4463.jpg

I snapped this pic of the Carthay Circle Theatre on Sunset Boulevard. It might not compare to the replica now open at California Adventure, but I still like it.

IMG_4465.jpg

Nice hat

IMG_4464.jpg

Lastly, I snapped a rather unusual menu pic. Often overlooked beyond the exit of Tower of Terror…

IMG_4471.jpg

is the long-forgotten Sunset Room.

IMG_4472.jpg

I don't know if I'd want to eat here - don't you think the menu seems rather dated? ;) It's just another example of ToT's detailed story.

IMG_4473.jpg

That concludes my brief update of Hollywood Studios. Up next - lunch :goodvibes

A Kona Cafe breakfast meet would be so fun! I don't really care where we would meet, but at least this way we wouldn't end up wasting a perfectly good Kona breakfast. :rotfl:

Anywhere or Anytime!!!:dance3::love::cheer2::goodvibes (I'm inserting all of the happy emoticons that convey my enthusiasm for this idea!)
Please, please, please think of your AP that you just renewed burning a hole in your pocket!:thumbsup2

The Olympics are still airing on the West coast here! Very interesting opening ceremony.

Your DHS preview sparked my interest in a few things and no, it wasn't just the cupcakes and treats! Although how lucky that my favorite snack at DHS was being given away as samples. I wonder if they would notice if I emptied the tray with an explanation that I was sharing with the rest of my party!! (myself!) :rotfl2:

You are a wealth of knowledge - you even know about the Mad Hatter Tea Party at DCA! And I haven't paid attention to the ToT exit and that cool menu - I'm going to be looking for that. Is it before or after the gift shop?

You mentioned Carthay Circle and it never sunk in that this was replicated at DCA recently. Here's some photos our hometown version from opening weekend of the new California Adventure entrance and Carsland:

The Olympic ceremony was really unique - I like how it had an extremely different vibe compared to China, and with lots of fun pop culture references. I loved the Queen's role in it - she seems so cool. :thumbsup2

The free sample was very surprising to me - the only other place I'd previously seen samples was at Main Street Confectionery. Your strategy sounds perfect though - one tiny piece simply can't cut it. :rotfl:

I enjoy reading about all the cool things going on at Disneyland and DCA, especially since over the past few years, the West Coast has been receiving the most exciting additions. DCA really sounds like the place to be right now - it must have such a festive atmosphere now that the whole park feels rejuvenated.

The "Sunset Room" is located before the gift shop - it's sort of between the shop and the kiosk where you can purchase your ride photo. It's noticeable if you're looking for it, but most people just walk straight by (including me usually).

Thanks for the pics! The new Carthay Circle at DCA looks so beautiful and ornate (and I've heard it has an awesome restaurant inside :)). I'm very impressed that you made it to opening weekend! :thumbsup2

Great update and thanks for posting the photos of the yummy snacks :thumbsup2

That was some opening ceremony wasn't it!!

It finished at 12:50 AM over here, at least you all got to watch it at a more reasonable hour :goodvibes

We really didn't Linda! They started it on tv at 7:30pm EST so it didn't end until after midnight here either! And I'm tired!:upsidedow

Wow!!! You mean you didn't take part in the park opening stampede to the Toy Story Ride??? :lmao:

Por favor, manténgase alejado de mi café!

IMG_4448.jpg

I saw this mug at the Downtown Disney store and almost bought it. I didn't though and now I can't remember why??? I think that maybe it wasn't dishwasher safe. Which would definitely have been a deal breaker for me! :lmao:

Starring Rolls was also on my window shopping list.

Hmmm...I wonder what that bright yellow stuff is on the top??? I'm with you, Donald, the old version looks much more appealing. :thumbsup2

Yea, I think I'll stick with the Carrot Cake cookie. ;)

Of all the snacks at Starring Rolls, I think this napoleon looked best.

IMG_4463.jpg

Hmmm...maybe??? But I think I'd prefer the one at Boulangerie Patisserie (sans icing). ;)

You know, my DH's name happens to be Donald (he is the "d" in jabead ;)) and his face looks just like that whenever I start talking about taking another trip to Disney World. :lmao:

That concludes my brief update of Hollywood Studios. Up next - lunch :goodvibes

And I'm anxiously awaiting to find out just where that lunch might be??? ;)
The logical choice would be HBD since you are at DHS, but I'm still thinking that you ended up at one of the monorail resorts for lunch...the one that starts with a G.

So sorry to hear about your Narcoossee's experience. While DH's salmon might have been an ordering mistake (I think the current salmon dish sounds awesome, assuming it's the same one), the other mistakes are very sad. I definitely think your server messed up what would've been an otherwise enjoyable chicken dish, and I'm shocked to hear about the raw cheeseburgers (you'd assume that would be something they've completely mastered). My mom really enjoyed that chocolate dessert (and I liked it too, although I couldn't eat a whole portion of it), but we're both fans of very dark chocolate (I've often eaten chocolate bars with 85-88% cocoa at home ). Overall, I think Narcoossee's could (and should) be better than that, so if you decide to go back, hopefully you'll have a server who doesn't mess anything up.

We went to bluezoo last August! Basically, we loved the appetizers and the dessert was very good. My fish entree was underwhelming, my mom's chicken was oversalted, and we didn't think the sides were great. I'd go back, but not soon (and I'd probably stick to appetizers). :thumbsup2:

The more I think about it, the more I would be willing to give Narcoossee's another try! It's just so hard, there are still so many restaurants we want to try, although we've done a pretty good job at doing many, and still so many that we would love to go back to! Just not enough time!

I should have known you had Bluezoo in your repertoire!:goodvibes
Thanks for linking me back to your review! Your photos are beautiful! I'm sorry you were underwhelmed by the fish. My DH loves fish and we are going w/o kids for this trip so we thought it would be the perfect place to try, as it's not someplace we would bring our kids, more because of the menu and upscale atmosphere.
I'm tempted to cancel our reservation at Bluezoo and go with one of my loves Citricos or Jiko. DH has not been to either, but my kids and I have several times. What to do....

Thank you Donald Dole Whip as always for sharing your amazing experiences and thoughts and photos!

Belle needs one of those mugs to bring to NYU. And I need one of those Napoleons! So thanks, Donald...thanks A LOT! ;)

Thanks so much for the snack review! Sweet Spells is definitely added to my list for a snack visit.

I also love that vintage Donald duck mug.

It was very impressive! But unfortunately they've decided to air the Olympics here during prime time, so we don't really see it live and the ceremony still ended at midnight. :lmao:

We really didn't Linda! They started it on tv at 7:30pm EST so it didn't end until after midnight here either! And I'm tired!:upsidedow
I wonder why they decided to air everything late - perhaps so people who work until 5 could still see it? I'm sure you weren't the only one who was tired

Wow!!! You mean you didn't take part in the park opening stampede to the Toy Story Ride??? :lmao:
Nope - I don't love TSMM, but I'm certainly glad the ride was built since it diverts everyone away from RnRC and ToT. :thumbsup2

I saw this mug at the Downtown Disney store and almost bought it. I didn't though and now I can't remember why??? I think that maybe it wasn't dishwasher safe. Which would definitely have been a deal breaker for me! :lmao:
Aw, that's annoying (but seemingly not exclusive to that mug). I remember reading that someone bought an Orange Bird cup at Sunshine Tree Terrace, and when they put it in the dish washer its face peeled off! :scared1:

Hmmm...I wonder what that bright yellow stuff is on the top??? I'm with you, Donald, the old version looks much more appealing. :thumbsup2
I also have no idea what's on top of it. :rotfl: Oh well - one less tempting snack in the World

Yea, I think I'll stick with the Carrot Cake cookie. ;)
Agreed - this is clearly one of those situations where less is more.

Hmmm...maybe??? But I think I'd prefer the one at Boulangerie Patisserie (sans icing). ;)
I don't think I'd ever buy a napoleon for myself, but my mom is a huge fan of the one at Boulangerie Pâtisserie. :thumbsup2

You know, my DH's name happens to be Donald (he is the "d" in jabead ;)) and his face looks just like that whenever I start talking about taking another trip to Disney World. :lmao:
Woah - I didn't realize the "d" even stood for something! You should definitely buy him that hat :thumbsup2

And I'm anxiously awaiting to find out just where that lunch might be??? ;)

Even if you don't give Narcoossee's another try soon, there are so many other places where you can have a great meal. After all, the more things that go wrong, the longer it takes to 'forgive' a restaurant (and some people never will), and it does sound like your meal was 'off' in several ways. bluezoo could be a lovely place to go and order a few appetizers, and Citricos or Jiko would also provide a great meal. :goodvibes

Belle needs one of those mugs to bring to NYU. And I need one of those Napoleons! So thanks, Donald...thanks A LOT! ;)
You're very welcome. The mug would be such a cool item to bring to college, and the napoleon does look very tasty - some things in life are definitely worth the money. :thumbsup2

Thanks so much for the snack review! Sweet Spells is definitely added to my list for a snack visit.

I also love that vintage Donald duck mug.
Sweet Spells is a great place to explore! It has a unique theme and plenty of goodies to buy. :thumbsup2 The more I think about it, the more tempted I am to buy that Donald mug. My sparse collection of Donald merchandise includes a Donald shirt, hat, and pin - one addition to the collection couldn't hurt! :)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Hollywood Brown Derby is my favorite restaurant in a theme park. Ahead of Le Cellier, Bistro de Paris, Via Napoli, you name it - I just love this place. From the Old Hollywood atmosphere to the impressive food and service, HBD is my favorite theme park restaurant, and currently one of my top 5 overall (up there with Artist Point, Jiko, Yachtsman, and Narcoossee's).

IMG_4484.jpg

Brown Derby wasn't originally in the plans. But after I walked by and saw a certain new item on the menu, I decided that changing up my plans would be worth it. So I postponed Sanaa (until next time) and got an ADR for 11:30.

IMG_4480.jpg

Soon after I arrived, Pete showed me to my table. He was very friendly, and he recommended the entree which I was already planning to order. I love when that happens :thumbsup2

There are lots of great dishes are on the menu, from the Cobb salad to the incredible duck duo I had last time. Many other dishes (such as the salmon and grouper) were also tempting, but my mind was made up.

IMG_4485.jpg

Do you see it yet?

IMG_4486.jpg

Bison! Brown Derby added bison to the menu! There are only a few other Disney restaurants where I've noticed buffalo on the menu, including Artist Point (it's a classic dish there), The Wave (they serve a bison burger), and California Grill (it's not currently on the menu). I couldn't wait to try this dish.

From my table, I had a great view of the rest of the restaurant. The decor here is awesome.

IMG_4490.jpg

IMG_4493.jpg

My server, Cheryl, was extremely friendly. She told me that the bison had been on the menu for about a week - I certainly have no problem trying something that's brand new.

Since it was a hot day, I ordered a water and an unsweetened iced tea. Cheryl brought over plenty of lemon wedges which added some flavor to the tea, and she did a great job with refilling both drinks.

IMG_4488.jpg

As usual, the meal began with Brown Derby's rolls (which were warm and soft on the inside). The butter is topped with a red clay Hawaiian sea salt, and like the butter at Jiko, it has a light texture and is easy to spread.

IMG_4495.jpg

IMG_4497.jpg

Finally, it's time for lunch! Here's the spit-roasted American bison. It was served with a slaw, white truffle croquettes, and a cocoa espresso barbecue sauce.

IMG_4498.jpg

To me, bison doesn't really taste different from beef. However, it's a leaner choice, which is certainly a good thing. I thought this bison was delicious, and it reminded me of roast beef - a suitable choice for lunch. The sauce was sweet, but not overwhelmingly so, especially when combined with the bison and the savory croquette.

IMG_4499.jpg

The slaw was a cool and refreshing change from the rest of the plate. I'm not a fan of slaws that are creamy and full of mayo, so this was perfect for me.

IMG_4501.jpg

Finally, the white truffle croquette. This was fantastic. Crunchy on the outside, soft and creamy on the inside (like mashed potatoes), and with an earthy flavor from the truffle, this is one of the best side dishes I've tasted in WDW. I don't think I've ever liked a croquette so much.

IMG_4500.jpg

After I finished the entree, it was time for dessert. I really like the grapefruit cake at Brown Derby, but oddly enough, their fruit cobbler has also become a favorite of mine. Cheryl told me that the fruits in the cobbler were strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries - yes please! :thumbsup2

IMG_4503.jpg

This dessert is very different from Artist Point's cobbler (which I also love), but it's so, so good. Those sweet, warm berries topped with not too much crust, some warm orange blossom honey, and tangy crème fraîche - wow. :cloud9:

IMG_4502.jpg

Before I left, Cheryl offered me a cup of iced tea to go. I thought that was such a nice gesture, especially since it was so hot outside.

IMG_4507.jpg

Once again, I loved Brown Derby. A lot of people have it ranked on the lower end of signature restaurants, and it commonly receives the criticism that it's not worth 2 credits on the DDP. To that, I say: thank you, Disney Dining Plan. Thank you for making this restaurant seem like a "bad value" using credits, thus making HBD an easy place to score last-minute ADRs. Brown Derby has been a favorite of ours since 2002 (we even had Thanksgiving dinner here in 2006 - I ordered the noodle bowl since I was a vegetarian at the time ), and while it hasn't always been in my top 5, we've kept coming back. I don't regret it. :goodvibes

Really enjoying your reviews. Those croquettes sound delicious, my husband had the fruit cobbler when we were there last and he loved it too.

I'm so happy that you're enjoying the reviews! Those croquettes were amazing - the truffle flavor pushed them over the top, and the texture was just perfect.

Glad to hear your husband also enjoyed the berry cobbler. I rarely see that dessert mentioned around here, but it's become one of my WDW favorites. :goodvibes

Very glad that I already added HBD in! :thumbsup2 Was actually reading the menus to DH & DS last night and the bison intrigued DS. I think he will definitely be trying that if it is still on the menu!

Yay for bison! It's DH's favourite and we get some filets from a local farm as a special treat from time to time and grill it at home, so he will certainly want to try this dish out in October. It wasn't on the menu when I made the ADR, I know I wanted to try the Cobb salad, and I thought DH would go for the duck.

Thanks for the great review! :)

Aha! So that was the alternate plan to Sanaa. Cool choice since I'm a huge HBD fan! :thumbsup2

When you asked if we saw what you were ordering on the menu yet I was going to guess "duck two ways!" :lmao: But yes, bison was the perfect choice.

The bison looked amazing - perfectly cooked and sliced thin. The croquettes sound wonderful even if they looked like fried cheese at first glance. :p

Both the AP fruit cobbler and this version look delish.... I may have to try both for comparison purposes too. Thanks for including the photos of your prior versions, that was a great idea.

I just saw your comment on iloveeeyore's PTR about now knowing where you are from! Heck, I may be curious (ok, nosey) but I didn't want to ask and be a creeper! :rotfl2: You've evolved so far from my original estimation of you being a mature (read, much older) individual from Canada (not sure where that impression came from.) And yes, I did call you a lassie once in my extreme ignorance. Again, my apologies for that! :lmao:

Now I simply know you as Mr. DDW who writes amazingly articulate reviews with great photos who MUST take more WDW trips (e.g., circa August 18th) so we can enjoy your great talent!!! :yay:
