Hey all! :wave2:

My Dh and I are taking a relaxing (and hopefully romantic :flower3: ) alone trip to Montreal this July. We are staying downtown at the Hotel Du Fort - anyone know if it - how is it? I've read that its close to the Ste Catherine Street shops, but what’s there? Also, I know there is an underground mall - is that close to there as well?
What else.... I want to go to museums – what’s close by - or is there a subway that we can take? And lastly, food!!! Can you recommend any good restaurants in the area? I'll eat anything, but DH is rather picky.....

TIA!!

Sorry, I don't know the answers to your questions, but my daughter just spent 3 months in Montreal and just loved it. I'm sure you will too, there'll be lots of help along soon. Have fun!:)

We were there a year ago and I grew up there as well in the early 70s.
Not having French is not a problem whatsoever in Montreal, if you venture out to the country, only french in some areas. I do speak French fluently and it helped me there but as soon as I speak French to a Franophone they spot my accent and speak English! Nice people.

We loved the Notre Dame basilica, Mount Royal, Olympic stadium,
If you like Jazz, we went to a couple of great places booked by our concierge at the Intercontinental hotel. This hotel is right on the separation of old montreal and new. Neat. You have to walk around Old Montreal. Wow. (Do a guided walking tour!)
So quaint and cool (but it is very hot!) esp in the summer. Th Biosphere is the most incredible thing we have EVER seen indoors. A must. Don't forget the Botanical Garden and Insectasaiurm.

In July, there is the just for laughs festival: Super great!
and many other events. http://www.go-montreal.com/attraction_events_jul.htm
If you have any questions, let me know.

I think July is JUST FOR LAUGHS FESTIVAL.

Poutine...for sure you should try it at best 2 -3 times a year... AKA artery clogger.... but realy tasty.

The french didn't think fries were fatty or salty enough so they smothered them with delicious gravy and a curd cheese.. enjoy :)

They should have restrictions on where they can sell this stuff though. I would say no more than 100 meters away from the local hospital...:rotfl2:

Wow guys, thanks so much for the info and the links. I was just doing some more research on hotels, and I came accross the Auberge du Vieux-Port in Old Montreal / Old Port area. Is it a nice hotel? What is there to do there - is it more or less.... happening... than downtown?

Thanks so much guys - you have been such a great help!!!
Gotta love the dis!!!

Been there, done that (twice) would soooooo love to do it again. We love it! Ask for a room facing the water. Oh, I'm so excited for you!!!

:thumbsup2

No matter how gross you think it looks try it. It's amazing. I personally like it with beef gravy rather than the chicken gravy.

My thoughts EXACTLY ! The most delicious, fattening thing on the planet !

Being in Montreal as a tourist, there are good chances you may come accross an old Epcot Canada Pavillion staple... The Beaver Tail!!!! you can find these at the La Ronde Theme Park, Old Montreal ( accross from the old port ) and in a few other touristy locations/festivals.

I would also sample a Montreal Smoked Meat from Reuben's, Dunn's or Schwartz' ( it's "sort of" like a NY pastrami sandwich ). Not to mention the famous Quebec "delicacy" ... the poutine. ( a.k.a. Coronary mess, Fries covered in cheese curds and gravy ).

And yes, if you're down in the summer, should be prime festival season. There's always something going on Downtown. Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, Jazz Festival, Beer Festival all depending on the time you come.

OMG, now I am DYING to have that!!!!!!!! :lovestruc  :cloud9:

I was born and raised in MTL and I miss Montreal food!!! You just can't get food like that here in the west :sad2:

Although, it's probably a good thing though as I would probably be 400 lbs if I still lived there

I can't believe no one has mentioned Lafleurs!!!!!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

La Belle Province is delicious but Lafleurs is the BEST!!!

Thanks so much again for all the great info - your making me so excited to go!!!!! I don't know if I'm going to try that fry thing - I just lost 70lbs (hopefully about 20 more by the time we go), and I don't want to gain it all back in one bite!!!!
