and I wanted to thank everyone on the Disneyland forums who helped us plan both the DLR and San Diego portions of our vacation. Y'all helped make our trip with your tips and friendly answers to my many questions. We had a wonderful time.

We fell hard for DLR's unique charms. I am not sure how a place that would seem to share - on the surface - so many characteristics with WDW (many of the same rides and the same clean, charming feel) and still be so different. I hope to do a trip report with more details.

We stayed at the Hojo's and the service was a tad disappointing there. We had Disney premium view reserved with a room request that was, basically, "not 7th floor and quiet, i.e., not highway end of the building". We were, of course, put on the 7th floor in the second to last room even though we showed up early to try to secure our room request (this was my fault that I thought hotels assignment system works like Disney's, I am still uninformed about that aspect, I guess, but our original desk clerk didn't explain to me that our room wouldn't be assigned until I returned ... though I made our requests clear to her and she also didn't tell us to return earlier to make sure we got our requests. We came back at 3:30 and that room and one other were all that was available). The front desk wouldn't let us change and, when I inquired if we could move the next day - a Monday - was told, "Hmmm ... probably not ... I wouldn't get your hopes up, they probably won't allow it." I was also told "no one has EVER complained about highway noise in the premium view rooms." I thought about that often as I laid there listening to the rumbling, lol. My only concern was that the skylights and noise would prevent my boys from getting adequate sleep and this turned out to be true - they were up by 6 a.m. and couldn't nap in that room no matter what I did so, they were a tired mess by the time we checked out 4 days later. The room was fine though we couldn't see any DL except Space Mountain because of a palm tree in front of the room. I would stay there again if we got the entertainment rate but I wouldn't pay rack rate I don't think. And, Lorealle still rocks! I hope the powers that be realize she is the best thing at Hojos! Oh, and don't be afraid of the length of the walk! It didn't seem far at all with the shuttle area short cut.

We continued onto La Jolla for a few days where we played on the beach and the boys rested up. It was blissful! Then, since our wonderful hotel the Grande Colonial had booked up many months ago due to the U.S. Open, we moved on to the Bay Club on Shelter Island in San Diego.

We were so sad to leave! We ate so much great food that I think I have gained 10 lbs. We noted that DLR's food quality, though fewer choices, of course, outshined the current WDW; we wondered if it's because of WDW's dining plan and continued standardization of menus but who knows? That debate has been done to death on the forums to the north of this one. :-)

Thanks again. Off to do laundry and try to find our Photopass cards!

Glad you enjoyed your visit. Disneyland is a special place. As much as I really enjoy WDW, Disneyland will always be my favorite theme park in the world.

We had the same experience with Hojo's last week. Although we were on the 4th floor with a Disney view room. We could hear the freeway noise, but that actually didn't bother us. It was the Grad night noise, the buses coming constantly, people talking below outside, and the city working on that little street next to the building that we found quite loud. We also requested to not be on the top floor and on the quiet end of the building. We didn't get the top floor, but I'd say that was probably the more noisey end of the building (we were on the very end too). I'm guessing the other end of that building would have been much quieter. We also didn't find the costumer service to be that stellar, like so many rave about. Had housekeeping walk in on us after the room had been cleaned, and then told us to next time put the do not disturb sign up. They also didn't ask how our stay was when we left or anything. But, besides the noise the room was fine, and the walk wasn't bad at all either. If we ever decide to go back there I think we'd have to stay in another building. We like our quiet! :)

Glad you enjoyed the rest of your trip! We had a great time also, and are experiencing those "Home from Disney Blues". :)

I'm excited for your trip report because we're staying at HOJOs for 4 nights and then Bay Club on Shelter Island for 4 nights!! Where do I find the trip reports? I'll have to be sure to get my room request in early because on our last night we'll be in that same building. Thanks!

We are visiting DLR next Summer. We are planning to do Disneyland first then San DIego and also plan on staying at the Bay CLub. Tell me what you lliked about it. Was it close to Seaworld & the Zoo?

It's pretty close to both places, a big factor in why we chose the Bay Club. About 15 minutes to Balboa Park and the Zoo, about 10 minutes to SW during non-peak traffic times. Do yourself a big favor and map the return trip FROM the Zoo not just the directions TO it. You can't return the way you came and it took us 3 trips before we figured it out (my kids loved Balboa Park and we ended up returning several times!)

The Bay Club was not the fanciest hotel I've stayed at but Shelter Island was fun. It had a sort of funky tropical vibe (it sorta reminded me of the Polynesian Resort at WDW, if you've ever been there. Quality was similar too). There is an enormous marina with endless boats to watch. The other side of the hotel faces the bay but the parking lot and a busy street lie between so we preferred 2nd floor marina view which is literally on the water. We had an executive suite on the 2nd floor and the room was huge with two balconies. It only had one king bed plus a queen-sized sofa bed so might not be an option for many but worked out for us (with the addition of a crib). As long as our little guy can be in a crib, we'd book this room.

One caveat: check the concert schedule for Humphrey's next door. Our first night they had a Beach Boys concert. Despite the no parking signs, the Bay Club lot and garage were used by concert-goers and it was a nightmare finding a parking spot. (In the end, a nice employee moved his car over a bit and DH somehow maneuvered our Chevy Uplander minivan rental into HALF a parking spot. They are my heroes. :-)). The upside to the concert was that we had a perfect view of the stage from our balcony so we got to see the Beach Boys for free from the comfort of our room!

Breakfast was very typical hotel stuff. Nice to have for free.

HTH!

Did you eat at the Bay Club Bar & Grill? We're staying there and thinking about eating there a few times. TIA!!

Nope, we just ate the free breakfast. Very few places to eat on Shelter Island though so it might not be a bad idea to try it there. I do have to say that, when I asked the front desk, they didn't suggest their own restaurant, but maybe three little boys were a factor in that. :-) They pushed Pizza Nova which is a short drive away. We didn't make it there - my boys chose In N Out burger that night instead!

Hi! I think we were at DLR around the same dates! I also have to agree that despite the repeated comments on the board about the food being better at WDW I was pleasantly surprised by the food quality at DLR. Although, there are more upper end choices at WDW. I thought the food was quite reasonable and very tasty and the two counter-service places we ate at: French Market and Taste Pilot's Grill. In fact, we did not have any unsatisfactory food experiences and I am very particular about the quality and taste of my food.

Thanks jenjersnap for getting back to me so quickly. This hotel always gets great reviews on Trip Advisor. There are very few hotels surrounding SeaWorld that get a "thumbs up".

Do they offer shuttles to/from places like SeaWorld and the Zoo or do you think its better to rent a car? Did you have to pay for parking?

We have stayed at the Poly at WDW so I know what you mean about the tropical style hotel. It sounds nice and anyplace that offers a free breakfast is a bonus. The hotel is reasonably priced as well.

Any other places to eat that you can recommend? Were there beaches nearby?

THanks again,

Joanne
