My little niece had her 4yo old immunizations on Monday. (I provide daycare for her.) She developed a huge welp on one leg. It is very sore & warm to the touch. She also ran fever on Tuesday. It's Thursday & it doesn't look any better. Yesterday the Pediatrician said this is normal!!? Anybody else's kids have this trouble?

Oh my gosh! How bizarre!!

My nephew did develop a red welt on his leg, though, after his most recent shots. I went away after a few days and didn't cause any problems. His doctor said it wasn't unusual. He had some fever, too, but Tylenol helped a lot. I'd just keep an eye on it. Sorry she's having a rought time!

It's probably within normal. Keep an eye on it. If it get worse, I would call the dr. The fever is probably related to the immunizations. Tylenol or Motrin will work for that. The welt is probably from the way the shots were given physically.

Totally normal. Warm compresses and some tylenol will help. Some kids are sensitive. Make not of it, though, so the next time he has immunizations, you remember this and mention it again.

My babysitter's daughter had these with each set of shots. Her doctor also said it wasn't a problem, FWIW!

After my DS received his 4 month shots he had a welt on both legs for a couple of days and my pediatrician said it was normal.

I always give my grandson 500mg liquid Vit C for five days before and after his shots. I put it in his bottle and now his cup. You wouldn't believe how dark is urine is from the vit c pulling stuff out of his system. I also massage his legs two days before and after with lavender essential oil. It can be put full strength on the skin. He has never had any swelling or problems. (knock on wood) Also give Tylenol BEFORE the shots and a couple of times after. I don't feel it is NORMAL to have a swollen area after the shots. Oh.....I am peds nurse.

Warm compresses should help if there is swelling.

I wish I had known this before she had them. She did get tylenol before & after but still ran fever & developed the WELT. I didn't think it was normal.
She ended up getting four injections, they were out of one of the combined ones. I don't understand why they insist on giving these all at the same time. I know she was pretty upset after the firsth injection, so I'm sure her muscles were pretty tense.

The swelling started to dissapate late yesterday.

My daughter is 24yo, so I haven't had to do this in quite a while. I don't remember her having this problem. Thanks all!

My 5 year old had one with his last immunizations. But this was the first time he ever got the welt. It would have been gone in just a couple days, but he's a scab picker. So he messed with it so much that it took forever to go away. :confused3

Just FYI, recent research suggests that regular application of lavender or tea tree oil on children's skin can cause symptoms of premature puberty, particularly bre@st development in boys. (The oils contain plant estrogen compounds). http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/10/18/healthscience/snearly.php

Lavender toiletries that are made for use by children should be safe -- things like Johnson's Bedtime Bath, for example. The amount of lavender in them is pretty small. I like lavender toiletries, but I don't let kids use the full-strength stuff.

You only need one drop at the injection site so there shouldn't be any problems. However with that said, I am more worried about all the hormones in the fast food, chicken and meats that are causing the premature puberty. I'll stick to the essential oils.

Keep an eye on it. When DD got her 5 year shots for kindergarten, she developed a Staph Infection at the site of the injection.

You don't need to do them all at once.. many people space them out. It's easier to pinpoint an adverse reaction if you don't have quite so many at once.

OP, try to research it if you have time. I just googled it quickly and found many interesting websites. You have to sift through it, obviously, but it's worth researching.

DS got his 4 month shots yesterday and has two lovely red welts too. Fever last night and incredibly cranky. Today the mood is better but his two legs still have the big red spots.
Im like that too, I got my flu shot while we were there and my arm is aching today and I was very sleepy yesterday.. not too cranky though :)

I just gave him some tempra and the dr said it was normal.
