Imagine going to the hassle of waiting in line to apply, only to find out that you weren't really Canadian!

Hundreds of people are suddenly discovering that they are not Canadians as new laws requiring travellers to have a passport to fly to the U.S. go into effect Tuesday, CBC's investigative unit has learned.

Many applying for a Canadian passport have been informed their chance to remain a citizen expired years ago because of an obscure provision in the Citizenship Act, a little-known law that applied between 1947 and 1977.

The law states that if you lived outside Canada on your 24th birthday and failed to sign the right form, you automatically lost your citizenship.

OMG I thought you were joking and realized you were not after reading this. Apparently it went smoothly in Calgary with a report of a teenage girl with dual citizenship trying to fly to Florida to see her Grandparents on a birth certificate.

My daughter got her passport processed after only a 1 1/2 hour wait at the passort office today. She was told she would recieve it in about 15 working days.
What we didn't realize was that once the photo is signed by an authorized person that the signature is only good for 60 days. Just a heads up to anyone who has their papers all signed but hasn't taken it to get it processed yet. Luckily my daughter still had 5 days left before the signature expired.

Well it looks like going to the airport will be no hassle. It appears 98% of the people have complied by getting their passports. I am just glad we renewed and got the kids in May.
