Well, this trip was....different. UPDATE - 9/1!

Oh Amanda it sounds like you were a real trooper for that race...for what it's worth I am proud of you! I remember how nerve wracking doing a race can be. Good for you for finishing, and being there all by yourself!:flower3:

I loved Earl of Sandwich too, it was so yummy. There is just something about that bread they use...:hyper:

So interesting ...I've never heard much about the races!

Sorry you didn't do as well as you could have...but I'm glad you were able to finish!

Great updates, Amanda.

I'm sorry you were disappointed in your time for the race. But you had been sick and that leads to dehydration and then the heat on top of it. Look at it this way, you did better than most of us reading your TR because we didn't even do it. :thumbsup2

I'm so happy you finally got to Earl of Sandwich and that you and Ed enjoyed it so much. It's a great place and at a great price.

Love the pictures of Reid, as always. The one with the "feet/paws" is adorable.

I'm sorry the race experience was less than specatacular, but with everything you'd been through leading up to it, I don't think you should be too disappointed in yourself. After battling illness, and then traveling and then getting up ridiculously early, sometimes the body just won't respond like you want it to. I guess that just means you'll have to go back and do it again so that you can enjoy the experience a little more and beat that time. :thumbsup2

I'm really glad to see that you were able to work in your meal at EoS and that it was relatively uneventful. :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

I wanted to stop in a couple of shops that I knew the guys could care less about. So, we decided that Ed would take Reid to the carousel while I went shopping. I stopped in the Christmas store, Goofy’s Candy Co, and the kitchen store
Ok, I think that is nice that Ed and Reid didn't have to tag along for all the shopping, but I'm pretty sure I'd pick Goofy's Candy Co. over a carousel. :rolleyes1

Hi Amanda! I’m back!

I LOVE that first pic of Reid at the top of the slide - so crazy-cute!!!!

I take that back - ALL of the pics of Reid on the slide are crazy-cute! Oh my!

You got some absolutely beautiful pictures of my favorite place on the planet. :lovestruc

Hmm, I do NOT like The Shining aspect of BC!!! :scared1:

I’m sorry that the run was not what you were hoping - it is impossible for something like that to go as well as you would like when you have been that sick right up until the race. :( I do, however, love that there were characters in the woods - that is just so weird to me! But in a good way!

EoS food always sounds and looks so good! Makes me wish I could eat bread!!!!
What a nice time at DTD. We have to get there someday!

Amanda I'm so sorry that the race wasn't what you'd hoped. As for your time-you'd been sick! You can't beat yourself up over that.

BC has creepy hallways? Not sure that I want to hear that. :lmao:

Yay for EoS!!! I'm so glad that you got to go and that you enjoyed it! Sounds like your brain wasn't in the mood to shop that day. I'm sure that Ed appreciated it. :rotfl:

Well I'm suddenly really glad that I've never seen the Shining because... no thanks!

Aww, I'm sorry you didn't do as well as you hoped. I do think the illness played a big part in that though! Those kinds of sicknesses can just drain you. Do you think you'll ever try another Disney run?

I'm glad you finally got to try Earl of Sandwich!!

I'm sorry the race didn't go well for you but you should still be very proud of yourself. I'm sure between your illness traveling and having less than a stellar nights sleep would get to anyone at race time.

Hahn for creepy hallways!! Yay of EoS! That is one of our favorites too. Love the Thanksgiving sandwich!

Amanda, you should be VERY proud  Please, you were sick the days before, it was HOT muddy....you traveled and didn't have a straight night's sleep. You ROCKED the 5K as far as I am concered :goodvibes

Ugh...the shining...what a scary thought

The PB&J does look kinda thick....LOVE the pics of Ed & Reid!!!

One complaint...you are not in enough pics

I am guilty of the same...I should talk :rolleyes1

Thank you very much!! :goodvibes There was no way I was backing out of the race but I wish I had been able to do better.

I loved Earl of Sandwich too, it was so yummy. There is just something about that bread they use..

Oh my goodness....that bread is so awesome!!

So interesting ...I've never heard much about the races!

This was our first time participating in a Disney race. So, it was interesting to get to do something new at Disney.

Sorry you didn't do as well as you could have...but I'm glad you were able to finish!

Thank you!!

Great updates, Amanda.

Thank you!!

I like your way of thinking! I am happy that I at least did it and finished.

I'm so happy you finally got to Earl of Sandwich and that you and Ed enjoyed it so much. It's a great place and at a great price.

I was so happy to finally eat at EoS!! You really can't beat the prices....especially considering that those sandwiches are big!

Love the pictures of Reid, as always. The one with the "feet/paws" is adorable.

Thanks!

Thank you. I definitely want to do another Disney race one day. Hopefully, things will go a little smoother went I get the chance.

I'm really glad to see that you were able to work in your meal at EoS and that it was relatively uneventful. :rotfl2:

Yay! for uneventful meals! :rotfl: I was so happy to finally try EoS.

Ok, I think that is nice that Ed and Reid didn't have to tag along for all the shopping, but I'm pretty sure I'd pick Goofy's Candy Co. over a carousel. :rolleyes1

You're right....but I didn't tell Ed that I was going to Goofy's Candy Co. :rotfl2: It was actually an impromptu stop...but I didn't buy anything.

Luvin the race medal. :thumbsup2

Thank you!!

Hi Amanda! I’m back!

You just need to start neglecting some housework or something so you can get on here during the week! :lmao: Can't Willow cook for herself yet? :confused3

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

I LOVE that first pic of Reid at the top of the slide - so crazy-cute!!!!

Awww....thank you!

Hmm, I do NOT like The Shining aspect of BC!!! :scared1:

:rotfl: It's just those really long halls.....it was all I could think of!

We don't always schedule DTD time but if it we can work it in, we do. I don't like to spend lots of time there but they do have some neat stores.

Amanda I'm so sorry that the race wasn't what you'd hoped. As for your time-you'd been sick! You can't beat yourself up over that.

Thanks. I still would like to do the Princess Half Marathon that they do in February (although not this coming year). So, maybe one day I'll get a redo!

BC has creepy hallways? Not sure that I want to hear that. :lmao:

Well, it may just be me. :rotfl2: I've never heard anyone else describe them as creepy. But, The Shining is all I could think of when I was walking down those halls.

Yay for EoS!!! I'm so glad that you got to go and that you enjoyed it! Sounds like your brain wasn't in the mood to shop that day. I'm sure that Ed appreciated it.

You are so right....I'm sure Ed & his wallet were happy I wasn't in a shopping state of mind.

Hi! I'm a little late but I'm subbing now!

Never too late! Thanks for subbing! I do have links to my updates in the 2nd post if that helps.

Well I'm suddenly really glad that I've never seen the Shining because... no thanks!

I'm not a big horror fan but The Shining really is a good movie. But, yeah, it's made me dislike really long, winding hallways in hotels.

Aww, I'm sorry you didn't do as well as you hoped. I do think the illness played a big part in that though! Those kinds of sicknesses can just drain you. Do you think you'll ever try another Disney run?

Thanks. I definitely would still like to do the Princess Half Marathon one day.

I'm glad you finally got to try Earl of Sandwich!!

I have to say that it lived up to all they hype. Very yummy!!

I'm sorry the race didn't go well for you but you should still be very proud of yourself. I'm sure between your illness traveling and having less than a stellar nights sleep would get to anyone at race time.

Thank you!! I keep trying to tell myself that at least I went out there & finished it.

Hahn for creepy hallways!! Yay of EoS! That is one of our favorites too. Love the Thanksgiving sandwich!

EoS was very good! That Thanksgiving sandwich sounds yummy. I must have missed that on the menu.

Amanda, you should be VERY proud  Please, you were sick the days before, it was HOT muddy....you traveled and didn't have a straight night's sleep. You ROCKED the 5K as far as I am concered :goodvibes

I know, right?!? :scared1: It's just those long halls!

The PB&J does look kinda thick....LOVE the pics of Ed & Reid!!!

Thanks!!

One complaint...you are not in enough pics

:rotfl2: I know! But, I'm the family "photographer". There will be a few of me once we get into the parks & I have a few Photopass pictures.

I am guilty of the same...I should talk :rolleyes1

:lmao::lmao:

As I have found recently, I can get myself into trouble giving my opinion... but here goes...

I think you should be proud of your race. No matter what the time - you finished and as Kathy mentioned, that is better than those who didn't run it at all.

That being said, I think being disappointed in your time is heathy. I think it shows that you would like to improve, that you know you can do better and that someday you will. :goodvibes

THAT being said.... illness, sun, mud...heat!!! OMG! you did awesome for those conditions!!!

Just get back into the training (if that is your desire) and rock the next race, cause YOU CAN!!!!:thumbsup2

I'm not completely caught up, but I did read about your race and you should not be disappointed. It is always harder to run off than on road. Of course you slowed down and had to walk from time to time to keep your footing. You can;'t compare your times. These races are for fun, not for time. Kudos to you for being sick and still getting out there so early, waiting for hours, and running the race. :thumbsup2

Fun morning at DTD!!!! Great pictures!

Don't worry....you won't get in trouble with me for your opinion! I really appreciate your opinion....I think you have some very good points. So, I thank you! :flower3:

I do hope to do another race one day and finish with a better time.

Thank you! It definitely wasn't the best conditions I've ever run in.

I do need to get back to running. I had every intention of getting back to it this week. But, this week has been CRAZY busy and it just didn't happen. Hopefully, next week I'll be able to get back to it!

Thank you!! I had never run on a trail before...I knew it would be different but was surprised by how different it made my running. Hopefully, I'll be able to do another Disney race in the future and I won't be sick for it.

Fun morning at DTD!!!! Great pictures!

Thank you! We did have a nice, leisurely time at DTD.

Hi, everyone! I've been meaning to post updates for y'all. But, this week has been so easy and I haven't been on the DIS at all. I have spent the last 3 days at Reid's school helping organize Halloween parades and parties. And then, of course, last night we had trick-or-treat.

Now that all of that is over, I should be able to go back to updating 2x/week. So for this week, I'm going to finish up all the race stuff with 2 updates right now.

Here y'all go.......

I knew we were going to have a very late night with Ed’s race so I wanted us all to rest. But, I knew Reid would not go down right away. This is the kid who gave up naps at 18 months. When we got to the room, I made everyone get back into their pj’s. I figured this would help him to get in a cozy state of mind. But, I agreed to let him go ahead and play with his new cars. While he played, I put my new strap on my camera and Ed watched TV.

After about 30 minutes or so, I told him it was time for lights out. He put up the cars & we cozied up in my bed. Ed was fast asleep by 2:30 pm. Reid finally caved in and fell asleep by 3 pm. And I followed shortly after. Everyone slept well. Ed woke up at 4 pm, myself at 4:45 pm and Reid at 5 pm!

Everyone got up and got ready for dinner. Since Ed needed to eat light, we just headed back down to the Beach Club Marketplace (I promise our meals will get more interesting after the races). Reid had the kids pepperoni pizza, which he really liked. Ed went with the hot ham and swiss sandwich. He thought it was really good. And I decided to give the pepperoni flatbread a try. It was a bit greasy but I liked it!

After our meal, it was back to the room for Ed to rest up a bit. He got ready for the 10 mile race and left around 7:30 pm. Reid and I stayed in the room. He played, I journaled, uploaded pictures, we played cars, etc.

Finally, around 9:10 pm, we had had enough of the room so we decided to start heading to DHS for the race. At the bus stop, we were the only ones there waiting to go to the race. A bus pulled up quickly and we were off! The bus driver was extremely nice...very talkative with Reid....but he didn’t seem to know a lot about Disney. Shocker....I know. He mentioned at one point that he was taking us to Universal Studios. Okay....if that’s what you want to think, buddy. We stopped at Boardwalk where we picked up an elderly couple. They were trying to get to WWoS to watch their son and daughter-in-law. They were quite upset that no one at Boardwalk seemed sure of how they could get to WWoS using race transportation so they asked me. I wasn’t positive but tried to help them the best I could. I sure hope they made it there.

It wasn’t too long before we were being dropped off at DHS. Reid and I made a long trek to where the runners were lined up. I was really hoping we would be able to see Ed before he started. Unfortunately, I soon realized that the people were seeing were in Coral C and he was in Coral B. Since we couldn’t get up to where he was, we headed to the front of the park to go in with our Villains Bash tickets.

As we were walking towards bag check, we could see fireworks for the start of the race. We were through bag check and into the park by 10:10 pm. I made Reid hop in the stroller since I wanted to get to our destination quickly. I didn’t know how long he would stay up and I wanted him to have at least a little bit of park fun that night. With him strapped in, I was like a speed demon pushing that stroller through DHS dodging around the ropes and such that they had put out.

But, we made it quickly to our destination: Toy Story Mania!

When we got in the queue, there was hardly anyone in there. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it so empty. In no time at all, we were on the ride! This was the first time Reid had a gun all to himself and he had sooo much fun! He was laughing so hard the entire time....which, of course, made me laugh.

When we got off, we were still laughing so we decided to ride again! There were a few more people in line than before but it was still very quick to get on the ride. The second ride was just as good as the first! We were so happy to have been able to do 2 rides so quickly on TSM!

Back in his stroller, we started making our way back towards the hat. There was a DJ set up in front of the hat. Well, Reid started feeling the beat and had to get up and dance:

After a little while, we started to hear cheering. We realized that the first racer was about to come through. This would be the winner of the race. He passed by us....man, he was fast! He ended up finishing this 10 MILE race in about 57 minutes! Only 5 minutes more than what it took for me to run 3.11 miles that morning.

We decided just to stay in our spot instead of doing more rides. We were having lots of fun cheering for all the runners that came through. As it was approaching midnight, I couldn’t believe that Reid was still awake. Although, I could tell he was slowly starting to fade. Right about midnight, I looked down to see him in his stroller just closing his eyes. I looked back up and saw Ed coming our way! I hurried up and woke Reid up (I about scared the life out of him) so he could see Ed. We cheered loudly and Ed saw us just in time:

That’s him in the yellow shirt just in case you weren’t sure!

Once Ed passed us, I made a quick potty stop for Reid and then grabbed us a Sprite. We headed to a bench near Echo Lake and I texted Ed to let him know where we were. Eventually, we were all reunited. Poor Ed looked beat! I could really tell the humidity had taken a toll on him. He ate a banana (that looked & smelled kind of yucky) and drank some Powerade. Oh - and this was his medal from the race:

Then, we headed to Indiana Jones where he had to get his bag he had checked for the race. Once he had his bag, he headed to the mens’ tent to change clothes and freshen up with some wipes.

I could tell he was exhausted but he agreed to go ride Star Tours for Reid. This was Reid’s first ride on it and he had been so excited about being able to do it this year.

Reid and I loved Star Tours! Ed.....not so much. He normally doesn’t get sick on those types of rides but he was really not looking too well. So, we decided to call it a night. After all, it was a little after 1 am by then.

As for the Villains Bash, I thought it was ok. Getting to ride the rides with hardly any lines during the race was definitely nice. The only villains we actually saw out were Darth Vader and the Queen of Hearts. None of the CMs seemed to know where any of the villains were or anything about what was going on.

We headed to the buses, got on one fairly quickly. Back at Beach Club, everyone prepared for bed and we were all quickly asleep by 2 am.

One more update coming right up....

Hello everyone, this is Ed (Amanda’s DH). I wanted to write a short Race Report for the Tower of Terror 10 Miler to help give a complete feel to the “Well this trip was…..different” trip report. With that, here goes my Race Report. At the outset I do have to issue an apology. Amanda is the photographer for the family, so no pictures. Sorry!!

After primarily relaxing Saturday, I got into my favorite running clothes and headed to the bus stop around 7:30 pm to catch a runDisney bus to Hollywood Studios. The almost-packed bus arrived at Hollywood Studios a few minutes later and the “wait” game started. This is one of the most frustrating things from local races of 50 runners to huge races with 16,000. We were supposed to be at Hollywood Studios no later than 8 and the race was to start promptly at 10. So, for 2 flippin’ hours you simply have to wait.

Now to runDisney's credit, there were food trucks and a DJ playing (I guess I’m getting old) way-too-loud music, as well as some ToT displays for photos. For the 1st hour of my wait, I just wandered around the parking lot where everything was staged and then started talking to a husband and wife from Kissimmee that run every runDisney race. After a while, we all said our “Good Lucks” and departed for our individual start corals.

By the time I got into Coral B there were probably 500 or so folks and I think all 500 (plus the 1500 or so that came in after I) of were waiting in line for a Port-O-Potty. The whole coral setup was done really well. They were lots of restroom facilities and water available inside the coral. The corals were also large enough to stage all the runners without making me feel like a sardine. So, anyhow, I waited about a half hour in the coral until we started the walk-up toward the starting the line.

The walk-up was about a half-mile or so and took us to the Start Area. By the time my coral got to the start area, they had started all the introductions and such on the stage. I read on someone’s race report that the stage was set up like a hotel front desk or something, but there were too many people in front of me and I didn’t notice it. After the intros and announcements were over, fireworks went off a few minutes before 10 starting the wheel chair racers. Promptly at 10, fireworks again for Coral A (the ridiculously fast runners) to start. About 5 minutes later, Ed’s big moment was about to begin! The Coral B fireworks display seemed to pale in comparison to the Coral A display, but it was still pretty cool to start a race like that (I digress here, but the all-time best start for me came at the Crescent City Classic – a Cannon Blast by the Marine Corps on the banks of the Mississippi River outside of Jackson Square New Orleans – Super Cool!!).

After our "subdued" fireworks, I started my Garmin and the Nike App on my iPhone and crossed the Start Line for the Tower of Terror 10 Miler! I read a few other people’s Race Reports and there seems to be a common theme of too hot and too humid. Well, we live in South Louisiana, so I really can’t use that excuse as it is too hot and too humid during the vast majority of my training runs. You never get totally accustomed to running in high heat / high humidity, but it is just a fact of life in South Louisiana. The one thing I didn’t account for was the hills. Everything around us is flat as a pancake, and I can’t stand inclined treadmill running. Don’t get me wrong, the hills on the course were not like San Francisco hills, but they were more akin to long inclines. Needless to say, fat-boy Ed struggled with the elevation changes.

Back to the Race. I finished Mile One in around 10 and half minutes, a little faster than I wanted to be, but not by much. Mile Two and Three took us to around the entrance to Animal Kingdom. Miles 2 through about 6 were the most boring parts of the entire race. We were just running up and down Osceola Parkway. There was some “entertainment” on the course, but I don’t really remember too much of it. At the 5 Mile point I was at 58 minutes, feeling good and on my way to my goal of a 2 hour finish.

Mile 6 came and right around this point we entered the “off-road” portion of the course. This was the Haunted Trail leading us into Wide World of Sports. The Trail was a little tight and the gravel didn’t feel too good on my worn out feet, but the Pirate Ship was kinda cool. After the Trail, we ran through some of the fields at WWoS and then onto the Track for one lap. The Track did have one of the cooler “entertainment” offerings, the shovel dudes from the MNSSH party parade!! After leaving the Track we made our way to do a lap around Champions Stadium. This was one of the other things I really enjoyed with the Race course. See, I’m a huuuuuuge Atlanta Braves fan, and the Braves play their spring training games at WWoS. So that was a ton of fun running around the Stadium.

It was at this point though that the ‘ol Edmeister started to really struggle. I don’t know if it was the hills, the long drive in the days before, the pool time the night before, the ham sandwich for dinner, or my rotund midsection, but I was starting to run on fumes. And it’s not good when you are running on fumes and you're only 7.5 miles into a 10-mile Run. So I did what I generally do when I hit this wall, I start walking. After about a 5 minute walk, I begin running again and made it to about the 8.5 mile mark before having to start walking again.

This time I walked for about 6 minutes, and the end of my walk was near the spot where we got into Hollywood Studios. We entered at the Lights, Motors, Action arena and I have to say I was a little disappointed. I thought that at least they would have a couple of cars out there, but alas there was nothing I remember. On the flip side, I certainly was not disappointed in getting to run through Hollywood Studios and seeing Amanda and Reid cheering me on! In fact, all the family members and friends cheering us runners along did an excellent job and they gave me the inspiration to finish. I can definitely say that was by far my favorite memory for the race.

Alas, we ran in front of TSM and then at some point made a sharp turn onto one of the back alleys/roads. It was kind of an anti-climactic finish, in what felt like the underbelly of Hollywood Studios. My official time was 2:04:59 for a 3665th place out of 8921 finishers. I was shooting for 2 hours, but I’m certainly not disappointed in my time.

After the race, a nice volunteer placed my medal around my neck. And then I had to juggle the race pack, a bottle of water, two bottles of Powerade, and a banana (with no pockets or any type of bag) back to where Amanda and Reid were waiting on me by Echo Lake. After sitting on a bench with my family for a few minutes and eating the super ripe banana, I went over to Indiana Jones to retrieve my checked bag with my change of clothes.

It was moderately ridiculous that we had to walk down the steps to get our back and then back up the steps to get out. You’d think that maybe, checked bag pickup could have been closer to the Finish Line or at least in an area that did not require going up and down steps after running 10 miles. Even though I didn't agree with all the steps, the actual bag pickup was run rather efficiently (given the sea of clear runDisney bags on the tables) and only took a couple of minutes.

The Race was fun and there certainly were not enough negative points for me to never want to participate in another runDisney event. It is really cool getting to run through the parks and WWoS with everyone cheering you along. I’m certain that runDisney will make the Tower of Terror 10 Miler an even better experience in the next few years. One definite word of caution though…Do Not Run 10 miles, then drink half a bottle of Powerade, eat a super ripe banana, and finally ride Star Tours. Trust me – not a good combination.

I agree with everyone else, I think you did awesome! :flower3:

You had a lot going on, and the race course did not have optimal conditions and it was really dastardly hot! I was thinking about you and Ed that day and hoping that everything was going well, because there is no way I would have made it running in that heat!

I'm glad you finally got your meal at EOS!

Those toy story cars may or may not have come home with us as well! :rolleyes1

We were posting at the same time!

Ok, let me comment on what you just wrote:

I'm so happy that Reid took a nap for you guys, getting him into his pjs was genius!

Also super awesome that you were able to ride TSMM with virtually no wait, that is definitely a big perk. I also love the pics of Reid dancing, super cute! He is such a little trooper staying up so late.

Sorry to hear you weren't able to see any villains. I didn't hear great things about the after party, but it seems like you had a good time!
