Somehow I think this whole Dame Doris thing kinda backfired for the DIS....

I wonder if it has something to do with the fact the one 'acceptable' form of discrimination, and humiliation is the "overweight" population... and so many of clothes 'faux pax' turns into showing a little more... and its humilating enough then to have this forum, it does seem a bit 'abusive'...

imho (and yes it does look as if they didnt try and show the obese population, but I'm just sayin.... )

Also, with bad shoes, well they're not saying anything derogatory, just how is the wearer wearing the shoes for a 5 - 10 mile walk? OK, and now I'm wearing Crocs, and I quite regularly chime in, they are UGLY shoes... but I acknowledge how I'm able to walk in them...

Do what you will, you made your choice, but I'm not throwing out a welcome, I'm *sighing, knowing the whole "mean girls" syndrome that is prevelant in our society, and to me this feeds that - its sociable acceptable to be mean...

While I'm extending a welcome to Doris as a new member of the DIS, I'm putting it out there that I thought the article was meanspirited, in poor taste, and not in keeping with the general tone of the DIS.

I know it's meant to be amusing, and taken in a lighthearted spirit, but considering that one of the main points of the community is to reach out and provide help, advice, and camaraderie to other Disney fans, it seems that launching a new feature intended to pick on people isn't a good idea. BadShoe is funny, because it's not really seriously mocking people, but this? ick. I won't be reading it, thanks.

Here's a thought...

Why not turn this around and have Dame Doris focus instead on the positive? Give us tips, photos and commentary on appropriate (as in comfortable & tasteful) outfits to wear to WDW. Try providing useful information on park fashions, such as where to find comfortable walking shoes and sandals that look good too... or nice, neat clothing options like capris and skorts that will allow one to keep cool & comfy while still looking nice and thoughtfully put together.

I think you will find that people are more receptive to receiving tips on how to dress well, and seeing photos of really nice fashion choices. Dame Doris could even take it one step further, and search out online clothing sales items which are similar to a chosen 'Perfect Park Outfit' each week. Inform us, and help us to find those great apparel options to wear on our next visit to WDW. Rather than being so critical of people's fashion faux pas, why not make Dame Doris's column a fun and informative place that can help us to prepare for our Disney vacation.

Hey DISboards, I hope you're listening to this little focus group. The thing I like about these boards is that you can post the most mundane question and people here don't reply with a rude "just do a search" (like you see on nearly every other message board). We're all here to help each other, whether you have 5,000 posts or 50. With that said, this Dame Doris stuff is completely out of line with the spirit of this board. If you still feel obligated to keep the Dame Doris thing, at least maybe you could put a positive spin on it and show what people SHOULD be wearing to a theme park. To me, it's still boring, but at least it's not insulting.

culturally insensitive to the list of adjectives offered in review of the Dame. Disney is an international tourist destination and many outfits that are trendy and stylish abroad might not seem so in the US.

Finally, I can't understand why the DIS would "dis" Disneyphiles. Are they not your target audience? Why insult your bread and butter?

I'm not surfing the DIS pages for at least a week as my own personal protest.

Do we even have the "right" to express our concerns about this?
Hasn't it always been DIS guidelines that basically said you can't 'comment' on the DIS about the DIS?
This credited to the fact that since it's a privately owned thing, there is no freedom of expression.

I think the Doris thing has backfired, and honestly someone should have seen that one coming. Shoes ( as an example) are pretty anonymous, as opposed to full body (even without faces) photo. Also, I think it takes someone of professional abilities to pull off satire. If it's done poorly, satire can seem like really mean, hate driven slander.

I don't really know what to think. I, myself, a former 'chubby' person, am back to my great dressing and fabulous shoes. HOWEVER, when I am at the parks, I am trying to be comfy. I have seen a lot of people at Disney parks, and never once have I seen someone who was 'fashonable'. Well, maybe myself when I was a teenager...those were the days...
I am thinking comfort wins out on this one. Walking around Disney in even my most comfortable wedge shoes and sundresses just seems silly to me now.

If the pictures were just posted by themselves, it would be one thing. In bad taste, yes. But the mean commentary from an anoynymous *new* face on the DIS? That's what crosses the line for me. It's not nice, and it's not funny.

I agree with so many here. I'm particularly disappointed in the lime green photo and "critique" that could purposely target someone on this board (I liked the pants, btw and no the picture is not of me).

I do feel some people on this board are being a tad bit hypocritical (and before everyone starts freaking out it's not everyone) but I did see some BADSHOES.com or whatever that is in the signatures of people who were complaining about being mean. Do you think that is not mean? I would recognize my shoes if they were up there. People are entitled to wear whatever they want but we also live in a country of free expression and people are entitled to print whatever they would like as well. That's how it is.

btw i'm neither for nor against this new Dame Dorris, just a little miffed about the hypocracy on this thread.

just going to throw in my 2 cents as well. I'm a lurker, and obviously don't post much, but i read the DIS a lot during the day, and I think the whole Dame Doris thing it terribly mean spirited I work in midtown manhattan in an office where there's a lot of pressure to be fashionable . When i go to disney, its a VACATION, i don't care what i wear. i wear what's comfortable to walk around in all day, and i wear my otherwise dorky t-shirts. i even bought a pair of crocs to wear when i go next week! the last thing i want to think about is that there are people out there looking for guests in goofy (pardon the pun) outfits to take pictures of so they can send them to the DIS. I guess I thought the DIS had a bit more class than that. reminds me all too much of junior high...

i don't know about y'all, but i will be thinking twice before i put on my swim suit and go for a swim. if any one had a pic of that and ripped into me for my stretch marks and left over baby blubber from my pregnancy (that pouch won't go away even if i starve myself and do sit ups perpetuallyfor the next 4 years!!!!) i would cry for days and never go to a public pool again.

yea i agree that we all need to go a little lighter on many topics, but i just can't stop thinking how someone would feel if they recognized themselves in one of those photos with those comments along side it.

How would it be if Dame Doris just focuses on people wearing Lime Green and posts a selection [without comment] in every newsletter. If a DISer spots themselves pictured in the newsletter they have say 1 week to notify Dame Doris of who they are and they get a DIS T-shirt that says "Dame Doris Found Me".

I for one think that it has to do with the mean spiritedness and of the commentary - and the fact that the pictures in some cases are not that bad - the lime green being one - while I wouldn't wear those pant - I think the girl looks fine.. (ok so I don't have "fashionista" sense).

I've never found Badshoe to be mean spirited - the family who has the website has lots of fun - and pokes fun at themselves as much as the shoes. Dame Dora seems to have set "herself" up as the final word - and really hasn't poked much fun at herself .. of course she hasn't been around long enough. I hope she softens her tone.

You know, before we knew who "She" was, just going by the clues on the DIS main page, I guessed "she" would be a "Tag Villain". Maybe someone who'd leave mean types of tags under your username. I'm glad I was wrong about that, but this Dame Doris is even worse than I had imagined.

I'm very DISappointed too.

However, I recognise the fact that this message board is privately owned, and therefore the owner can pretty much do whatever he wants. However, he shouldn't forget the sponsors of the boards are profit-making companies, and that WE, the board members, often PAY for their services. So in a way.... this is biting the hand that feeds it, since so many people are upset about this.

I also recognise that they (whoever thought this up in the first place) probably thought it would come off as something very funny and entertaining. I think the posts here are showing that it's not being very well received, and I hope (and I really do believe), they will rethink this whole thing, and do the right thing.

I think it was a misguided idea. I still say because I think this Dame Doris thing won't last long.

I was surprised at the mean spirited nature of the comments(and I liked the loud lime green outfit I hope that Dame rethinks her fashionista attitude. In Disney the only fashion thing I think about is comfort.

Of course I realize one person's sarcasim is another's hurt feelings. And no, I didn't think the outifits in the photos were that bad. That's kinda why I figured it was sarcastic.
