My mom is insisting we need to do "Welcome Bags" but the way I see it is we are already doing the Whoopty Doo Welcome Dinner, which is quite pricey when you're having 50 guests so am I being way too tacky not doing welcome bags???

You are not being tacky!
A welcome dinner is a wonderful touch and appropriate, just as the welcome bags are. But if you can only buget for one, then you should chose what you think your guests will appreciate more.

Spending time with you is a wonderful welcome gift - especially because dinner will be free! (for them at least)

AbbyPan said it best! I just wanted to add that, because the ladies on this board are so creative and crafty, it may seem like welcome bags are a requirement for every wedding, but they really are optional. I think we just have an unusually high proportion of talented Michael's addicts on this board! :rotfl:

I dont think its Tacky at ALL....A welcome dinner is such a nice touch.. I wish I could do that but I am havng 100+ guests... That bill would be outrageous!!!:goodvibes

We're doing O'Hana's for the welcome dinner. I wasn't planning on doing any sort of welcome bags strictly for the logistics of actually having to take all the stuff all the way down to Florida and also figuring out where everyone is staying because we have a lot of people staying offsite. I thought it would be better to give people fun experiences rather then a bag of 'stuff'.

I was also thinking maybe I would make photobooks to give as gifts to everyone after the wedding to show our appreciation for them coming.

This is a great post. We are having a welcome/Rehersal dinner for EVERYONE. We still wanted to do welcome bags but we just are not sure about it. Now that I think about it maybe the dinner is enough...OH I am just not sure!
