Weird question... is sleeping damaging my legs?

Ok so I have been having leg problems for months, it started out as shin splints, from over use and old shoes. There was always ankle pain associated with my shin splints but I just presumed it was reffered pain, I treated with R.I.C.E got new shoes went out again for a short jog, still hurt, took new shoes back, got different ones. More R.I.C.E another month off, new shoes went out for a walk, no shin pain yay :thumbsup2 but now a persistent ankle pain that wont go away, so more rest etc and going to get the damn shoes looked at again but last night when I was falling asleep I noticed I lay on my front which means my feet are pointing down all night long, and when I get up is when it is most painful, I had a theory and it might be crazy but could I be making my ankles sore by forcing them to point all night long and then when I run I am streching them in a different direction, I am making them go flat then upwards, could this be the reason I am in pain or am I just going crazy from all this time off the pavement?

Any advice would be appreciated

thanks

Kirsty

Not trying to be picky but is the ankle pain : front;back; medial(inside) or lateral (outside); does is radiate; How long after you get up does it hurt; can you describe the pain a bit more- burning, throbbing , more sharp, electrical and surface or deep. Is it more just ankle or ankle and foot or ankle and leg. How is your range of motion at the ankle, is the toes upward movement tight or is it easy to get your foot up past 90 degress with your leg with the leg extended.

This will get us a little closer. If your dorsiflexion is decreased then it may be possible the sleeping posisition isn't helping

when I wake up in the morning it is stiff and a little sharp, it feels deep and it lasts about an hour, I also feel it throughout the day like a twinge here and there but it is worse in the morning, it is front medial (right infront of my ankle bone and radiates up my shin) but when I exercise I also feel it in my achilles, this only lasts the duration of my walk/run I never have it there any other time. My ankle is stiff to rotate but will go and it hurts to point my toes upwards, but more like a stretching muscle hurt than any other kind of pain.

Kristy,

I'd say see a podiatrist. They may suggest orthodics.

Sleep aides, you may want to look into a foot boot, or ankle brace.
