Weird message from Disney

I get daily updates from the official Disney Parks Blog and there was an article I was interested in today about the "New, Improved Online Dining Reservation System for Walt Disney World Restaurants". So I clicked on the link and got the message "Did you know that your Internet Explorer is out-of-date? Our dining reservation system does not support Internet Explorer 6 or earlier versions. You will need to upgrade your version of Internet Explorer to a newer version". I clicked to download the update and it tells me I'm already running the latest version (Internet Explorer 8). Weird!!

IE6 support is being phased out in early July I believe. Many websites are posting warning messages even if you're running IE7 or 8. These should just be blanket messages that everyone is seeing. As long as the websites are working, there's nothing to worry about.

Thank you but when I try to retrieve my dining reservations I just get that message and it won't let me access the reservations I've already made.

As a person who works with this daily, I'm surprised more and more sites aren't doing this. IE6 is the WORST browser you could possibly be using and is the bane of all developers out there. They have to do so much extra coding to make a page appear correctly in all of the other browsers AND IE6 many are finally deciding that there aren't enough IE6 users out there and finally just not doing it. As of April 2010, only about 7.9% of users were using IE6 so YAY for Disney!

So do yourself, and all developers out there, and upgrade to something even a little newer, IE6 came out in 2003, its over 7 years old.

If you read my post above you'll see that I said:"I'm already running the latest version (Internet Explorer 8). "
That was the whole point of my post!!

Ack, must have missed the second reference to IE. You may want to go to Microsoft.com and ask it to check you and see if you are missing some patch or something. Or possibly just get Firefox and be done with it all.

Thank you for your help but I've had no problems before today and always download any updates I'm offered.

You are getting the message when going here?

Go to this website. It will display what website sees as your browser version (it's called the "user agent"). It should say something like "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; ..." If it shows "MSIE 6.0", that means that websites think you are using IE 6 even if you aren't. I don't know why this would happen, though.

Assuming your version if IE does show that is is IE 8.0, I would suggest contacting Disney via the web or calling.

Thank you!
It says:Your User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.0; Trident/4.0; Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) ; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729).
No idea what that means! :confused3

I'm on a mac and using safari. I've had no problems I know that's not the point but I just had to say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new ressie system! I've been on the reservation system 5-10 times a day for the last month trying to get one hard to find ressie. The new system is wonderful and makes searching 100x's easier!

I don't know when you tried to access the reservation system, but they had it down for maintenance until this morning. I suspect it has to do with the problems people were having. When I went in this morning, changes had been made to the system which included the option of allowing you to check for specific meal periods instead of just so many hours around the time you picked. I couldn't find the option to check a date range anymore either. You may try it again to see if it's working for you now.

Thank you everyone for your help. Unfortunately I still can't get on to dining reservations. When I go into "My vacation" and then "Dining reservations" it tells me I have to update to IE8 and won't let me get to my reservations - either the ones I've already made or any new ones I want to make.
Could the fact that I'm in UK make a difference? (I can't see how it would but you never know!!)

I am having the same problem, and I live in Florida, so your being in the UK makes no difference. I will try the link provided by the PP, but I consider this another issue in the long list of issues I have with Disney's web site. A couple of months ago it wouldn't accept my passholder info, and I had no access to passholder deals for at least a month.

BTW, I just looked at the link provided by the PP and it shows I am running IE8. I also just looked again on the Disney site now, and the problem was not changed with whatever maintinence they did previously. More Disney website idiocy.

It's doing the same thing for me. It says I have to upgrade but when I hit the button, it tells me I already have the updated IE.:confused3 And, before this, the online system has been working great for me, so, of course, their IT department had to go and screw it up.:rotfl2:

Are you viewing the page in compatibility mode?

[ edit ]
Looking at it, it appears yes, goto tools, Compatibility View Settings. Make sure display all websites in compatibility view is off. And make sure the disney websites aren't on the explicit list.

HAh, alternatively at the right of the address bar, right after the drop down arrow, and before the refresh button, there should be a page torn in half type icon if you are viewing in compatibility mode, click that, and it should turn it off for that website.

Thank you!

There's something funky going on there. That 2nd set of agents throws me for a loop. Perhaps the code at the WDW site breaks the header up and looks for an MSIE 6.0 (or earlier) without regards to the other aspects of the header that is sent?

Testing my own connection, I did not get that 2nd "Mozilla/4.0 (" portion. At first thought, I was thinking "compatibility mode", but turning that on mine just swapped the MSIE to 7.0, but everything else remained the same.

I would suggest trying a different browser (Firefox or Chrome) for now. Maybe some of the other dev-type people with more experience on this front could recommend other ideas. (Re-install MSIE? Is that possible? /shrug)

Well, I'm sorry to hear that amzking & pperfectmom but it does make me feel better knowing I'm not the only one!!! I'm a very non-techie sort of person and this sort of thing drives me crazy. Hope they get it sorted soon! It was working fine before the "improvements"!!! :rotfl:

I'm pretty sure reiella is right. I think it's a problem with using compatibility mode (I can't tell, I have IE 7.0 and Chrome).

Although now that I think about it, I should probably upgrade to IE 8...

Possibly not, my experience actually matches Cafeen's that compat mode just makes it pretend to be IE7 instead of IE6, and it certainly doesn't add a second client agent to the line. That is fairly odd, and may be more of a headache to debug [if it isn't compat mode, thinking it's a misconfiguration that happened somehow, and that's a pita to find].

The easy solution though, is to use another browser if it doesn't fix with compat mode settings.

As a sidenote, the new dining page works with IE9PP too.
