At our soccer game yesterday one of the girls on the other team took a pretty good shot to nose, probably broke it. The mother insisted on smearing vaseline all over the girls face to help it heal!
My other favorite is people that smear butter on burns which is one of the worst things you can do.
What other weird first aid things have you heard of?

That reminds me of when my DD (now 14) went to daycare. "Something" happened to her stomach...looked like a bite (a kid-bite) to me...and the nurse told me when I picked DD up "I don't know what happened and I didn't know what to do ( ) so I put vaseline on it." Gave me a whole lot of confidence in the nurse ("I didn't know what to do"?).

It's really bad Caity, it traps the heat inside making the burn hurt longer and it can cause all kinds of nasty infections. If the burn is severe enough that you need to go to the hospital the patient may get a lot of extra pain as the butter needs to be cleaned out and it is not a fun thing to even watch!

Burn Treatment

once when we were first married....I had a stiff neck......I mean it hurt to get up to a sitting position when I was laying down.....that type of stiff neck......so my husband went into the clothes hamper and came out with a sock......a sock can you believe it......and he put it around my neck......thank goodness it didn't stink.......but I have to tell you this.......I never ever complained about it again......if I had a stiff neck......I suffered in pain......

I'll throw in another fave for the parents out there. It is not unusual for a baby or a really young child to get a high fever and to go into seizures. These are called febrile seizures and they are not the same as epileptic seizures, they don't cause long term damage.
Almost inevitably we would find the child wrapped in 37 layers of blankets because the parents didn't want them getting "chilled".
Wrong answer, you want the child to cool off so the fever goes down and the seizures will stop on their own.
The opposite is also bad, I have seen parents dunk their kids in freezing cold water to lower the fever...

Vaseline as a cure all is funny, but PUMBA!!! Oh my gosh! ROTFLMBO!!!!! Hahahahahahaha! :teeth:

if there was a sore......it was out of the cabinet.....if there was a burn out of the cabinet it came.....if there was a rash.....out it came again.....bag balm for those not with it......is a salve for cows udders....if they got sore.......they would smoosh it on......but we didnt' have cows...(city people that use dirty socks only) but not a household in Maine can do without it.......my grandmother had ulcers on her ankles......and the doctor approved bag balm to help cure it.....yuck.......I used butter in the old days too for burns......but cold water worked alot better.....if it hurts really bad......we dunk a wash cloth in cold water and wrap it around the burn.......when francois was burned badly in an apartment fire...upstairs a few years back.....he came into our apartment and he was still sizzling...so I said....quick bathroom and threw a big bath towel in cold water and wrapped it around his head......he still had all three degrees of burns on his head and arms........but the water put the burn out thank goodness...so cold water in for a burn is the best for burns.....

My dad had hurt his knee. My grandma told him to wrap it it cabbage. In the morning the cabbage would be cooked and the knee would be all better.

Unfortunately, i know about burns too. DH had bilateral burns on his hands and forearms due to a black powder flash. I've heard of people putting something frozen on the burned area (like a bag of frozen peas  ) ....NOT a good idea.

I used to work in daycare and can't tell you how many of the other workers (who had all taken first aid classes) swore up and down that ice is good for burns. Cold water is good for burns, and even holding ice under cold running water is good, but ice is not.

DH's family in Alabama swears by apple cider vinegar as a cure-all. It might work for some things, but it stinks, and they actually recommend taking it internally for some afflictions. YUCK! I'm not going to swallow plain apple cider vinegar, no matter how sick I am.

How about using WD-40 to cure a stiff knee, shoulder, elbow, etc. I know plenty of elderly people who think thats just the trick.
My dad thought rubbing alcohol was the cure all. Didn't matter what the problem was. Just pour half a bottle on it and it would be ok.

WARNING!! This is Really Gross!

My DH's Grandmother was from Eastern KY. Hazard to be exact. VERY simple and country folks. She had 16 children.
When her children used to get an earache she would make them urinate in a cup and then pour it in their ear! :earseek:

I warned you.

Kermit, we were actually told (at the Loyola Burn unit here in Chgo.) that room temperature water was prefered. They said cold water wasn't even recommended. Holding an ice cube under running water is still shocking the affected area even more. Made sence to me, after they told me

Sonya! Oh my gosh! ROTFLMBO! :teeth:

Some of these are hysterical! :teeth:

Kermit - my family does the vinegar thing too! :p Every once in a while when I'm in the shower, I rinse my hair with it :o , but that's about all. I guess that's weird too. :p

Dreaming of Disney!   *faint*

Oh man...the nurse in me is cringing at these posts!!!!

When I was in nursing school the doc in the school clinic prescribed "Chloraseptic" for EVERYTHING!!! Sore throats, ear pain, fatigue....almost killed a friend of mine who actually had meningitis by giving her...you guessed it...chloraseptic!!! That is when I truly began to believe the phrase, "Those who can , work as docs...those who can't, teach...and those who should have MD stripped from their names, work in a school clinic!!!

Saffron, I rinse my hair with white vinegar and water, it brings out the blonde :)

My mother uses an onion on ant stings. Cut a fresh onion and rub it over the area, cut off another thin slice of onion and do it again, repeat. It works too, I don't know why.
