Weird Christmas Question

To avoid packing a mini Christmas tree for the trip, but still allow us to open presents under a tree anyway, can we unwrap our presents near one of the Christmas trees on the ship? Probably later in the night on Christmas night because we always open presents Christmas night not morning and to clarify I don't mean Christmas Eve.

Please ignore this - I'm embarrassed I even asked - if I knew how to delete it I would.

I think it would be cute, so long as you're not blocking people from taking photos by the tree or monopolizing the Christmas tree. I can't remember if they have more than one-- have only done 1 Merrytime cruise, and I think they had one big tree in the atrium and a little gingerbread house off to one side (classic ship).

IF we did it, we would be doing it after most of the ship had settled in for the night.

Last Christmas, we were on the Wonder so all of this reflects that. I really only remember the one really large tree. There may have been others I'm just not remembering, though. The tree is right in the main lobby on the third floor, but extends up well past the railing of the fourth floor. We in fact took several pictures on the 4th floor right nearby; it's a little closer to a "regular" tree size from there!

To answer your question (which is not that weird - everyone has different aspects of holidays that are important to them), I think it might depend on what you mean by "near", and what you mean by "later in the night". Earlier in the night - probably as long as there are any scheduled activities, the lobby will range from busy to occasional folks and it might be awkward to do much of anything on the third floor (the photographers will be out for quite a while, even, and you can't go near the tree then except for photos). But, there've been times I've found myself late at night (well after midnight) on the ship with no one around, other than the occasional cast member (usually doing some cleaning or maintenance). I imagine if you were there really late, no one other than the cast members might even know you were there!

But, there's a better option, I think. Up on the fourth floor, near the top of the tree, there were some of the lounge seats/booths. These were right near the tree. Last Christmas, they were often blocked off for the socially distanced characters, but I expect they will be more available this time around. I don't think it would be all that odd or awkward to be at one of the seating places in that area opening gifts (I mean, I guess if you are opening giant bags of gifts it might be, but I'm expecting you mean something less!). It would still be near the tree, and if it's after the larger crowds are gone, would probably be more private-ish, as well.

Of course, others could have the same idea, or the arrangement could be different or whatever, but I think that might work?

Thank you for this, and for the words of comfort on my embarrassment.
This will be my first Christmas not at home, and I'm one of those people who goes all out when it comes to decorating. Still going to bring a bunch of window clings from amazon for the mirror and verandah door.

You can order mini trees for your stateroom, too. They decorate them with little plastic Disney figures and some other things. They aren't really big enough to put presents under, but I like them anyway!

If anyone is around, expect to see smiles and tears. It would remind others of their own childhoods.

Disney ships are notoriously small down in their hours. Late night is a great time for empty-ship photos. my photos of the atria on the various ships would make you think I was the only passenger.

(If you want to delete a post after you have hit save, look for the word Edit at the bottom. Delete what you posted - but leave some character. Then Save. if If you are the OP - original poster - you won’t get rid of the thread. Glad you didn’t delete this one - it brought happy tears to my eyes. Holiday traditions keep our humanity going.)

Keep up the planning. You’re going to have a great time.

If you would like I can delete this thread for you, but there is no need to be embarrassed. You had a valid question and some good information was posted.

Please let me know how you would like to proceed. :)

We did a Very Merry on the Wonder last year, there are dozens of tress throughout the ship, but the main one in the lobby is pretty spectacular. Just check your navigator to make sure there are no pictures planned at the time you intend to open gifts and you should be good to go. Enjoy your holiday

The one time we did an Xmas cruise we went to "midnight" mass (the quotes because it was no midnight) Xmas eve. I conveniently forgot something in the room so went back to it while the rest of the family went to get seats at the service. I then filled the stockings we had hung in the room with gifts and laid out a few others throughout the room (we had a suitcase we had hidden that had the gifts in it). When we got back to the room my daughter was so surprised that Santa had found us on the ship!

Not sure this helps or gives ideas for alternatives. :)

Thank you for the offer, I think after reading the posts here I'm gonna be "brave" and leave this here. I was just so worried about coming off as a spoiled immature brat... I mean I'm 47 years old, part of me feels like I should be past this kind of thing.

This brought happy smiles - it's a beautiful picture.

You know, I wonder if this might not be an opportunity for Disney.

What about having a tree set aside for family pictures? The family could wear (family appropriate) pajamas (remember, you're posing for pictures, not going to Wal-Mart), have prop gifts to hold or actual family gifts to open, and pose around the Disney Christmas tree. It would combine the joy of opening Christmas presents with a touch of Disney magic. Of course, there would have to be a time limit....say 5 minutes per family. (Reservations required?)

My image is of a Christmas tree near a port hole window. While the family is posing for pictures, Santa can be seen peeking in through the window in the background. I suppose it could be Mickey dressed as Santa, but that would be an awfully big head to be seen through the window.

When we did Christmas on the Dream, we took one of these. I am not sure if they are still sold on property as this was 9 years ago. It is about foot tall and is perfect for a stateroom. You could try Ebay. Where are you sailing out of?

I saw a family doing this once at the Polynesian and imo it looked bad. It takes away from the ambiance for the other guests. I don't recommend you do that at any time- it simply isn't your tree- I think you realize this and that's why you tried to take back your post. My comment is not meant as an attack or anything and no, I don't think you come off as any kind of "brat" at all- I know you mean well. I'm just giving my honest opinion because I know I'm not the only cruiser who would perceive it this way onboard. :flower3:

Daytime (based on the light through the windows) on the Maiden Voyage of the Fantasy. Where are all the people? I do see a few.

The ships are like ghost towns during sleep hours.

We cruise out of San Diego what is the name of this item? I'll need the name to search ebay.
