does any one know which restaurants are good or bad for someone following weight watchers? I particulary wonder about counter service restaurants since burgers and fries are so high . Thanks

Hi Jann

I plan on eating lots of turkey legs, asking for carrots sticks instead of fries, salads with the dressing on the side, fruit salads and fresh fruits from the stands and every once in awhile a sit down meal with all stops pulled out. Gotta use up all those activity points that we will be earning while walking so much. LOL

Seriously, I do not think you will have a hard time getting what you need. If you have been counting points long enough you know more or less what you can or cannot have and you really will be getting a lot of exercise.

I am taking my scales with me just to make sure that I am not overdoing it. I have never gained weight at DW before my diet and hope to continue that traditon.

I sure wish a wiser mind than mine could come up with a list of WW or Adkins foods available at WDW. Would make life a lot easier. I have gone through some of the listings and marked down some possibilities for our next trip but it is not anything detailed enough.

Thanks, I was thinking of kind of mentally picking out what I was going to get for the places we have PS and I am planning on trying some q/c vouchers so if worse comes to worse I'll split a burger or what ever. I forgot they have the carrots or fries combo. i just don't want to throw caution to the wind. plus the activity points is true although last vacation I thought you could count all your points( hiking up a mountain uses alot of points!) ( this new flex thing has me a little confused about that)

Jann, the way I understand the new program is that instead of a range of points you basically aim for two points above your lowest point. You get 35 flex points to be used anytime during the week you want and if you earn any activity points you must use them the day that you earn them. If I am wrong I am sure that someone will correct me. I enjoy subtracting the points rather than adding what I was eating. Makes more sense and is a bit easier to keep track of.

The cooks at DW are adept at adjusting recipes to our needs and know even better than we do what is legal and what is not. Sure glad that the Brown Derby Cobb Salad is legal on my version of WW/SBD regime. LOL

You will be fine and just coming home even is an accomplishment in and of itself.

Jann --

Are you going to be doing the parks commando style? Lots of walking? Lots of swimming?

I'm a diehard Weight Watchers member and here's how I handled our last two trips. I ate very carefully for breakfast and lunch -- egg white omelets with veggies in them, fruit, salads with dressing on the side, vegetable soup, etc. Then, I let myself have a "treat" every night for dinner -- I ordered what I wanted (within reason, nothing fried, no fatty meats, nothing in creamy or buttery sauces -- otherwise, anything goes). And the real treat -- I ordered dessert every night! I didn't usually finish the dinner or dessert, but it made for such a great vacation to really be able to enjoy those meals with my family. And I lost weight on both trips -- a pound on our 5-day trip in May and .6 lbs on our 7-day trip in June.

I did do my regular workout at least every other morning while I was away and kept up with my water as well.

You won't have any problem at all finding foods anymore. I've noticed a big change over the last two years -- even the counter service places are getting more healthy alternatives. I had chicken caesar salad with the dressing on the side at both Backlot Express and in Tomorrowland at MK (can't remember the name of that big counter service place right now). Also had an awesome chicken salad with dressing on the side at Tusker House at AK and they have a cart outside the restaurant with all sorts of fresh cut-up fruits and veggies. And even if you want a burger or chicken fingers, you can always ask for fruit or veggies on the side instead of french fries -- the counter service places all offer this as an alternative. I'm sure you'll do great!

Just a little "food" for thought. When the TX state fair was coming last year, they gave out some "fair food" point values in our meeting - and a turkey leg was 28 pts.!

Minnie strawberry bars are great, and they're only a couple points.

so if you split a turkey leg with 10 other people it wuld be a good point value(lol) out of curiosity ( our fair is this weekend and not much else to do around here) do you remember any others..like sausage sandwiches have to be killers. Thanks

WOW, 28 points? I am not surprised. Had only intended to eat about a fourth of it and then hand it over to my skinny hubby. Sure is great having a junk yard dog. LOL I have found that I can eat more points if I stay away from the carbs and eat more meat so I think I will survive. Thanks for the heads up though.

Taking your scale? I can't imagine the torture.

Just kidding. I am also doing Weight Watchers and I'm bringing my "Jenny Craig-ing" sister with me in September. I have actually been considering bringing my scale with us.

I wonder what a scale in suitcase looks like to the airport scanners? Hmmmm.

Amy, I am taking the scales not as much to make sure I do not gain as to make sure that I am not losing too much and suffering for nothing. LOL Sure would hate to miss a Dole Whip and come home 10 pounds lighter. (grin)

I am driving so I have no worries about what the scanners might think. We stay 10 or more days at a time so I pack the car to the hilt and move in when we go.

Sounds like a great idea.

You know, I don't REALLY care what that scale looks like to the TSA folks at the airport.

I always put a "thank you note" in my luggage for them, just in case my bags have to be hand searched.

I'm silly. I know. It's OK.

Here are the state fair points that i have:
corn dog - 11
Belgian waffle - 7
turkey leg - 28
sausage on a stick - 15
french fries - 9
cotton candy - 6
caramel apple - 10
funnel cake - 24

thanks for the points. and why would they fry a turkey leg when they could roast it or something ,oh well. I think I will go through the menus of the places I know we are going to and pick out a few meals per and figure the points before we go. Then i'll at least have a rough estimate......and hopefully not 28 point turkey leg surprises!

I too am on WW hence my screen name Bella the Ball 360 given to me by by 15 year old. 360 does not refer to my weight but the shape he feels I have. Anyway, I just returned from WDW and almost all the counter services restaurants have fairly decent salads the only problem is that they include the dressing on many of them and I do not like that part. I took some pop top Bumble Bee Tuna and some small packets of mayo. When we ate at the places with topping bars I added some shredded lettuce to my meal. Somtimes I would bring a couple of Wasa Crisp Breads to eat with the tuna. Let's face it you know you might slip but I figure if at meal time I make sure I have a low point lunch then i know I will not slip as badly.

Bella, thank you for your ideas of how to handle the eating at WDW. I might inquire as to the mayo though as most mayos are pretty high in points. I always get my dressing on the side and then dip my fork into the dressing and then pick up the salad. You will find that most of the dressing remains and you still got the flavor after you finish.

The turkey legs at WDW are fried? I thought I saw them being roasted. They are so big that I would not be surprised to see that they would still be 28 points but if you ate a portion and had a side salad I think it would still be a good choice. I have found that if I lay off almost all carbs and eat more meat even if I eat more points than my allowance I lose weight. I have lost over 6 pounds this week just eating that way.

I booked 10 days in November so I will be testing everyone's ideas and will report back as to how I did.. LOL

I asked about this on WWonline and they said the turkey legs are fried....got me, but don't think they would be 28 points otherwise unless it is from one giant turkey! ( course it probably includes the skin also) just checked the food guide 1 slice =3 pts.... that helped, now the question is how many slices= 1 leg?(lol) you could take packs of reduced cal mayo if you could find them. has any one ever tired requesting a dressing- less salad there. I wonder if you could get packets of dressing at costco or someplace pretrip ( or stock up on packs every time you get a salad at a fast food place before the trip!)of course now that is one more thing to worry about lugging along.

I realize that this may sound weird, but I have a fairly handy solution to the dressing problem.

I use the "half-sized" ziplock snack bags and pour in a usual serving of dressing for one salad. I know that amount varies for each of us. I personally like to have a smidge of salad to go with my vast amounts of dressing (chuckle).

I make sure (really make sure) that it is sealed. Since I carry a fanny pack into the parks it's no problem for me to slip the baggie in there. When meal time comes, I simply poke the corner of the baggie with my fork and pour away! All my mess is just thrown away with my meal, no bulky containers to fit back into my bag.

Two cautions: 1) Pleeeaaaase make sure you seal the bag! I have not made a mess yet, but I have been VERY careful. 2) I have never used a dressing that contains dairy for this trick. Wouldn't want it to turn on me in the heat.

Amymouse, I use empty film containers to hold my dressing but I also put them in a baggie, just in case. LOL

I love the taste of the full flavored dressings most of the time and use my fork trick to keep the points down. Works for me.

Even the so called FF dressings can be hefty on points sometimes. If it does not have the NI you are taking a risk IMHO.

Don't laugh, slightly goofy...OK laughing is permitted...I thought about using the film containers but they make me think of the funny smell that film has and I almost "taste" that smell. But that sounds like a fantastic idea for all the others who are NOT suffering from my particular insanity.

i thought the same thing about smelly film however I may try washing some in the dishwasher and see if it takes it away...never thought of it! and would even do it at home when I take my lunch somewhere and never have enough little tupperware. (I also can pick up odd odors at 1000 paces so probably would detect it or at least convince myself I did... )Good tip!
