Wegmans 100% proofing policy

Yes, it's the one in Bridgewater NJ. Over the past few weeks they moved boxes of wine and beer from the liquor store out into the regular store. It is sold by the Wok/salad bar but I see displays all over the regular store now. I guess i'm ok with the policy, it's just something new to get used to.

Wow, I go to Trader Joe's for a few weeks and look what happens at Wegmans! Now I feel compelled to go there tomorrow!

Maybe I didn't explain properly. I would not have probelm purchasing if my kids were with me, but if a group of kids, example 21, 21, and 18 went to buy the beer. They would all be carded and would be denied the beer. If the two 21's left the 18yo outside it would not be a problem. Last week a younger couple (married) were both proofed to get their beer in front of me.

You explained it fine. Our stores do the same thing. (DH and I must both show ID at certain stores if we're together.) I was just stating that in some instances you do have a problem purchasing if your kids are with you (if your kids are teens/under 21).

In the instance with my brother and SIL-- they should be able to say "This is my kid" (in their situation her little sister who lives with them), but the cashiers still refuse to allow them to buy the alcohol because they're shopping with a minor.

That makes it very annoying if you have to make a separate trip to buy beer instead of just picking some up with your groceries if you have your teen children along.

I have nothing to add other than this is the first time I have ever heard the term "proof" or getting "proofed"... I've never heard any other term other than "carded" or "carding"..I had to read through the whole post to understand what the heck "proofing" is...he he...you learn something new everyday! :confused3

The BJ's here cards everyone for alcohol purchases. They have to scan the buyer's ID. If their register shows an alcohol purchase but no ID, the cashier can be fired (which may explain the need for a 70 year old's ID).

The policy actually really saved me right before a trip to Disney! I'm well over 21 x 2. I pulled out my ID to buy a bottle of wine. It turned out that my license had expired!!! I ran over the next day to the DMV to get it renewed, but wouldn't have gotten the renewal in time. They gave me a temporary license that I could drive with, but it wasn't acceptable for ID according to the TSA. So I had to take my passport with me to get on the plane to Florida.

Imagine if I had gotten to the airport without realizing I didn't have a valid ID!! :scared1:

So for avoiding that, I thank BJ's! :worship::rotfl2:

In MN they have to swipe your driver's license before they can even ring up the sale. Most liquor stores won't budge on this because the fines for selling to a minor are just too much-which is a good thing.
