As there is more points needed for weekend stays is it cheaper to use the points for midweek and pay cash for the weekends and ALSO does anybody know do they offer discounts for DVC members paying cash for say these weekends

Sometimes you can get a cash discount for weekend DVC stays. Based on availability, DVC offers a 25% discount on room rates for members who want to pay cash.

Whether it's cheaper or not, I'm not sure. We usually stay on points through at least one weekend of our trip, if not both.

For us, it would be more expensive. We made sure we bought enough points to stay in a 2 bedroom villa at least 1 full week. It didn't seem to us that buying was worth it if we were still spending money for weekend stays. Of course, it also didn't take us long to figure out our initial 230 points weren't enough! :) That was when we added on. We usually stay about 10 nights each trip, and that includes one full weekend. That way we are getting the longer trip but conserving points by only using one full weekend.

Just wanted to add that when you spend $30,000 on a timeshare, it seems silly to then not spend weekends there.

agree with you here dianeschlicht guide did say some people move out for the weekends to save on their points but with DS def. wouldn't want to do this. I was trying to work out how many points to purchase and was looking at every scenario, say if one year for some reason we were some points short

We usually find that 5 nights is enough for us but certainly see how that is not the case for many. As a general rule I would try to stay at least 5 weeknights for every weekend. As long as you don't do the long weekend type trips you'll be fine. DVC is a very good value for 7 nights - it's just a better value without the weekends. You might do better with cash off season or whenever the 25% discount is available. Just make sure to link the reservations. Also, some members switch to smaller rooms on the weekends to save points.

I'm with you that 5 nights at a time is enough.
But then, I have friends who live nearby, so it is fine for me to take the weekend and go visit them. It's hard for me to justify the double the points it costs to stay on Friday or Saturday.

But if you wanted to stay 12 nights...you could do it with only two weekend nights and that would average out pretty good!

To each his hanname!

Yes, moving out to a value for 99 plus tax per night versus 20 plus points for a studio seems financially sound now, but, what about in twenty years? How much will the value resort cost then? I am really thinking that I need another 150 points to pay for my weekends.
