Weekend Travels - Fall Colors, Flight 93 Memorial

We live about 1-1.5 hrs away from Somerset, PA, and there are some covered bridges in that area, so I hoped to get some good bridge photos with the fall leaves. When I was checking their locations, I realized that the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA was in the same area. We'd never visited the Flight 93 Memorial before, so DH and I decided to stop. What a moving, emotional experience; here are some photos:

This American flag has the names of all the fire and rescue personnel who lost their lives in all 4 plane crashes on 9/11:

Also in that general area was the scene of another tragedy, but this one had a happy ending - the Quecreek Mine collapse in 2002, when all 9 trapped miners were rescued alive after 4 days.

Here's where the rescue shafts were drilled - I was surprised at how small the area was; it looked much larger when they showed it on the news, esp. with all the drilling equipment:

I had hoped that they would also have the yellow "capsule" that was lowered into the shaft to bring up the miners one at a time, but I think that's off in a museum somewhere.

Some close-ups of a sculpture of a miner at the entrance; it was a gorgeous, sunny day and we were there in early afternoon. Great for traipsing around the countryside, but the bright light is awful for photos.

I can tell just by looking at the pictures of the Memorial that it must have been a very moving experience.

Where I live we don't get fall colours on our trees - so I love to see all the beautiful photos. Thanks so much for sharing.
The Flight 93 memorial looks very moving.
