Trying to narrow down dates for our summer trip. Anybody know of any reason NOT to go the Week of July 18th? Sun, Mon, Tues, and Wed would be our days in the Parks. I've never gone during summer, so want to ask those of you who know, if there is anything I should be aware of before I book? (The first trip I booked right during Gay Days, because I DIDN't ask first!:) )

If we are flexible through end of June through beginning of August, would there be a better time to go? I've already looked at the AP blockout thread.

TIA!!!

Brianna

I can't think of anything. Those days should be as good as any in summer. If I had a chance to avoid the weekend in the summer I would though. :)

I'm with HydroGuy and think it's as good a time as any in the summer to go. Sunday might be a good day to switch with something at the tail end of your trip if you could possibly, but otherwise it all sounds good.

Oh, and you should check out the July thread :)

No I wish we were going in July, but I'm stuck in June at the worst time ever!!! :scared1:

I was actually prefering June, so I thought...but I was told to wait until after July 4th to go.... Why is June bad? I understand the June Gloom, but is it really bad? I don't want to die in the heat either! I'm trusting this advice and booking for mid July I think. I actually wanted to go for 4th of July and that was the ONE week DH can't go. Oh well!

Because the APs aren't blocked yet, so you have to deal with the early summer visitors + local AP holders visiting while they can before they're blocked for 2 months.

Exactly!!! And unfortunately we will be there the last 2 or 3 days the SoCal Select APs can go until August!! Plus with the WOC supposedly not opening until June 1, it'll be NUTS!!!!

Its not the June gloom that is the problem. June has traditionally been a pretty good month to go. The last few years and especially June 2009 changed all that. I went in late June 2007 and was there before and after the AP blockout and noticed a difference but the difference was not huge. That is when the AP number totals were closer to 100,000 than 1,000,000. Now things have changed. Plus the AP blockout has been staggered more in 2010 and does not go into full effect until July 3.

See "Understanding AP Blockouts and Impact on Crowds" http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2365983 and read post #2 that discusses June 2009.

The other issue with June are grad nights. See

"The Scoop on Grad Nights at DLR in May and June" - www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2298400

You will be happier with July and a couple extra degrees in temperature than June with parks swamped by savvy AP holders.

We went mid-July last year and liked it. It was hot, but we drank LOTS of water and went back to our hotel during the hottest part of the day.

The thing that made our trip the best - getting to the parks EARLY and enjoying the uncrowded park time. We literally walked on anything we wanted at 8 am up until about 11 am. The lines started to build at about 11, but we had 3 sets of FP's by then and had ridden a bunch of rides.

We usually headed out of the parks about 1 pm and went to our hotel (HoJo) and took a nap/rested and swam. We went back to the parks to use up our FP's around dinner time (5 ish) and enjoyed not standing around in the blazing sun in long lines.

I would definitely do summer again. :thumbsup2

Went last year when the AP's were unblocked, really a miscue on my part.
