I'm down here in Virginia trying to figure out what is best to send a friend marrying and living in Toronto ... It is a first wedding for both and they rent a flat in an old house. I'm not sure if I should send a gift card from an American store or go Canadian. Since I don't really know their taste together, I am reluctant to sink money into a gift-gift. Or, is it possible to send a check ...

What should I do? Is there a good way to play it in terms of the currency? I think they would drive over the border to shop so maybe a Target gift card?

The easiest way would be a gift card from amazon.ca they have household items now

I had a cousin who moved to Canada upon her marriage, and she asked for Sears gift cards, since they could be used on either side of the border.

I would probably go with a store that is in both the US and Canada, just in case. Some that come to mind are Ikea, Home Depot, Sears, Pier One... that way you don't have to worry about it!:goodvibes

I wouldn't go with Target - we don't have any here (though there are rumours that we will get some in the next few years).

As others have said, I'd go with a store that is found on both sides of the border.

Or, look to see if they are registered anywhere (one common place is The Bay). You can order from most registries even if you are in the US.

I second crashbb's suggestion of checking HBC (The Bay, or Hudson's Bay Company). Here's the link...just type in the bride's last name.

EVERYONE I know registered there (including me :)). You can also order gift cards from them, which work at several department store chains (The Bay, Zellers, and one of the big linen warehouses...can't remember which one!).

Thanks for the tips, I found them on the Hudson Bay AND Home Fitters web site. I may still go with a gift card but I love seeing what new couple pick out to live with.

We are all still waiting for the invites to arrive (wedding is 7/3), seems there is a delay crossing the border PLUS the invitation is in a tube !?!

The other posters mentioned gift cards, but in my experience I couldn't buy a gift card that could be used on both sides of the border. About two years ago I was trying to buy a Sears card from Canada and I would have physically had to drive down to the U.S. and pay in a brick and mortar store to do so. Tim Horton's are only good on one side of the border as well (you probably weren't going to do that though :))

I wouldn't assume they shopped across the border, its a good 1 hour 45 minute drive from Toronto. They would also be out of pocket for taxes and service charges when they brought the gift back over the border.

You can definitely send a cheque, generally when we do that we add "American dollars" to the line where the amount is written out.

Maybe we can convince you to go to the wedding? Then you can come up a little early and pick out a gift yourself from her registry, or a gift card directly from the store? Toronto is a lovely place to visit :wizard:

Buy something off the registry or send cash (either CDN$ or USD$ - they'll probably just deposit the cash in the account anyway.)

Gift certificates come in both CDN$ and USD$ and most cannot be used interchangeably even if the store exists in both Canada and the USA.
