Well Crissup if she is already running people off the road you did a wonderful job on the training.

She's not running people off the road, she's just seeking out spaces that are one car length and one inch and putting her SUV into those spaces.

She will learn that catsup doesn't go on a hotdog especially whe she gets to a stand that doesn't even have catsup!

I've tried to explain to her that even requesting this can upset some hotdog stand owners.

1. Never use a turning signal to switch lanes the turning signal means speed up and don't let them in.

I did demonstrate this to her. We got on the Ike and I told her "Watch". Then, I got up next to an open space and just turned on the turn signal. Naturally, the vehicle behind the open space immediately sped up to close the gap so we couldn't get in. Carol couldn't believe it! LOL! So, I explained that the proper technique is to start your lane change first, then turn on your directional to confirm that you are indeed changing lanes and aren't just driving crazy.

2. Always wait 30 seconds before going after the light turns green, somebody is going to take the red light.

Hey now!! I will not teach her poor driving habits! ;)

3. The longer you beep the horn the more mad you are. You will learn to ignore all the horns it just takes practice and time!

Actually, I explained that horns are a New York thing.

As for driving the Kennedy, I have not had her on it yet. I figure the best test will be a combination of the Kennedy and the Dan Ryan. ;)

I am sure she will do great crissup! especially since she has an suv people tend to move for them! You are right about NY the horns do tend to go off more there then here! And of course I wasn't telling her to blow the red light but she may want to wait when hers turns green because traffic going the other way may not stop for thier red light. also, one more rule if you stop at a yellow light there is a chance that you are going to get rear ended. yellow in chicago means speed up at least 3 cars can get through the yellow light in chicago and that is why the 3rd car is actually going through the red light so watch out for that one more carwhen your light turns green!

LOL!! Yep, I demonstrated that to her also.

Another one I had to explain. Poor Carol feels like she needs to learn to drive all over again. She's worried about passing the Illinois Driver's test. LOL! I explained that the way you answer the test questions and the way you actually drive are two different things.

I also had to laugh because a couple of years ago, there was a thread here on the DIS about people passing in the right lane. I had noticed that most people from the New England area were horrified at this practice. I've had to show Carol that around here, the right lane is generally the fast lane because all the idiots get in the left lane and stay there toddling along. So, you come up behind them at a high rate of speed, quick change lanes into the right lane (hitting your directional just as you complete the lane change), blow by the toddler, then scoot back into the left lane so you don't run into the New England tourist who's blocking the right lane by doing the speed limit. LOL!!!

She's getting the hang of it. ;)

It can tend to seperate the men from the boys. ;) Just stay in the gas and everythign will be fine. ;)

You seemed to cover everything. give her a month and she'll be just another crazy chicago driver!

Being a lifetime Chicagoan who was born and raised in the city before "escaping" to the southwest burbs, I have to say that Chicago drivers have gotten an unfair reputation. Sure, I used to think that driving in the city was a life-risking adventure, and I could cut off cars and steal parking spots with the best of 'em (hubby thinks I'm nuts because I will even cut off cabs), as well as being fluent in all forms of Chicago driving "sign language."
Then I started driving regularly in Kissimmee/Orlando, and let me tell you, Chicago is small potatoes! Here's the Disney-area recipe: Toss in one large package of U.S. tourists, add a healthy sprinkling of blue-haired grandmas and slow-poke grandpas, sprinkle liberally with confused Europeans, and add a generous dash of "I hate all the traffic and I just don't give a hoot" locals. Bake in the 100 degree FL sun for a few hours and I guarantee you'll never think driving in Chicago is bad again. The Dan Ryan? Lake Shore Drive? Ha! They can't hold a candle to 192 and Orange Blossom Trail in tourist season.

Problem with Florida is the Q-Tips (White Hairs) who don't look where they going. I just stuff my truck in where I wanna go and let them decide if they want to back off or hit me. Usually, by that point, they've seen me and they back off. :)

Congratulations!!!:flower3:

Thank you so much for sharing your picture of your special day. What a wonderful couple you both make!!

LOL, John!
I have to behave myself in FL because I'm always in a rental car, but in Chicago I can scare the Q-tips and everyone else. I drive an Aztek, and most people realize that anyone crazy enough to drive one of those is not someone you'd want to mess with!

LOL!!!! So I'm not the only one driving an Aztek around the city! I agree Barb, not many people want to mess with us Aztek people! What color is your's? I'll wave next time I see ya!

CarolAnnC- Congrats on your wedding!
And as far as Chicago goes? Don't worry, the Kennedy isn't all that bad. I was only stuck in traffic on the Kennedy for 2 hours yesterday afternoon. And our wonderful new "left lane law"? Ignore it, everyone does. And one more very important thing. No one in Chicago has ever driven in snow...... at least that's what you think on the first snow fall of each year.
