Hi girls and guys- I am so excited I just finished dress shopping and decided not to go with vthe red and white dresses- too much red and looked kind of funny on me. If you do a Google search for any dress maker with the style number or name of the style, usually you can find several reputable online vendors who carry it. The trick is when you have no clue what the style number is, because some bridal shops reverse the numbers or cut out the tags (which, by the way, is illegal if they remove the fiber content tag on an item offered for sale...). I am so excited- they let me try on everything. I tried on everything except the tiara- I bought it at claires for $6.00, sure beats the $130.00 bridal pieces they have there.
My FMIL found the dress for me and after trying it on- it was the very last one that I tried on I just knew it was my dress. I felt like a princess and can't wait until I get to wear it in December for hours.

OK ladies, I have to pipe in here. The last few pages of the wedding dress thread seem to be a lot about the prices. Don't take this the wrong way because I totally understand that when you have a budget you need to explore every avenue to save money. But PLEASE be very careful when buying a dress based on the price alone. Especially when buying from a discounter or internet site. Your dress is one of the most memorable things about a wedding - make sure you get the service that you deserve!

What happens if when the dress arrives on your doorstep, it is raining and it gets wet and water spotted? Do you think FedEx will care? Or suppose that you take it out of the box for a good look and you realize that there is big run or flaw in the fabric? Or what about when it needs to be hemmed, bustled and the bustline taken in so that your strapless gown doesn't show off all of your "personal" assets? Most bridal salons won't alter a gown that isn't purchased from them. Make sure that you know a good seamstress that has worked with bridal fabrics before. All of these are stories that I have heard before from real brides.

I had a girl in my bridal shop two weeks ago who loved a dress that I tried on her. It was $700 and that included hemming, bustling, side seam work and pressing. She called on Tuesday to let us know that she was buying it online for $500 with no alterations. I tried to reason with her - since that alteration package would cost $250 when priced out seperately - but nope, she was all about the price. I guess it was the right decision for her, but I just can't imagine! In the five years I have been selling wedding gowns, I have sold hundreds of them and only ONE needed no alterations at all. And it isn't because I measure the girls wrong, it's just that no one is exactly 5'9" with perfectly proportioned bust, waist and hips, except maybe Naomi Campbell, haha!

Again, budget where you need to, I do understand! Some other things are "less" important in my opinion. When I did event planning, I had a girl who had a wedding planned around a pink/coral theme. She didn't like the standard reception chairs which were burgundy/black, but also didn't want to add $5 per chair cover. When I asked her, "what color were the chairs at the last reception you were at?" She looked at me, laughed and said "I have no idea" Exactly! She worked her budget, didn't get the chair covers and was perfectly happy anyway. Budget where you can, but be careful budgeting with your dress! It will be very memorable!

That is so funny - small world! I got my dress at Jay's Bridal but I went to the boutique because my parents lived in Gainesville, Florida and I wanted to get my dress with my mom. I LOVE my dress! Everyone at Jay's was wonderful! It's a full service bridal salon and they sell on the Internet too but I believe the prices are the same if you buy in the boutique or on-line. I ordered my purse and some other items from their website. If you are lucky enough to be able to go to Jay's in person they will treat you like a princess - truly! They were so wonderful to me and my MOH I could not recommend the boutique and the alterations ladies enough

Thank you for reminding us all of that. I went and tried on dresses at the bridal salon and didn't worry about the cost until after really finding the true dress for me and my personality.
Just like my mom told me it doesn't matter how much it costs, I'm only paying for one wedding, and you only get married once. I tend to have to agree with her on that. I know that I am an intimate bride, but I realized I could have almost anything I want now being an intimate within budget and not having to stress over what I need to cut out of the plans to stay on budget. If I were to go with a custom wedding things would be more stressed for me as my mom has only allotted a certain amount for the wedding.

Remeber girls, you can also cut your costs on things that you don't really have to have but would like to have. Get the dress you want no matter the cost because like Chrissiereiss said, it is one of the most important part of your wedding day!

Chrissiereiss, I appreciate your comments, but every area is different in what is available in bridal shops, and also what tailor services are offered by those shops. Take a look at many local forums on theknot.com and you will find MANY brides who are very unhappy with the alterations they received "free" with their bridal gown purchase. Many of them are on there actively searching for a SECOND tailor service to have their gown repaired after letting a bridal shop do the alterations. This was the case for all except ONE of the bridal shops in our area... and I'm talking out of three larger towns... Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Lafayette. Granted, we lost a lot of tailors after Katrina, but these posts were filling the boards prior to Katrina as well, so it's not a new problem. I'm happy to hear that your shop offers brides a good tailor service as well as reasonable prices, but that is not the case in many, many places.

Frequently, the discount for ordering a higher-end gown online versus through a salon here is a lot more than $200... more like a $500-600 difference. We purchased my daughter's gown from a salon located 90 miles from our home, mainly because we couldn't find what she wanted locally in Baton Rouge and we had no idea who the maker was for the gown she loved. At the time we ordered from this salon, we did not know it was illegal for the salon to remove the labels on the samples, or I would have done business elsewhere. We got a decent price, but we did not return to the salon for our "free alterations" for a number of reasons... predominantly because the gas expense alone (not to mention the time) to get back and forth for several 180 mile round-trip fittings would be more than the alterations cost us at a local tailor shop. In addition, most independent tailors offer free spot cleaning for gowns they have altered after you take your bridal portraits, PLUS they frequently offer free steaming right before your wedding. Most bridal salons have an extra charge for those services (here, that charge at salons is typically $50 to spot clean and $50 to steam, so $100 more). Unless you find one of the RARE jewels in salons, you really aren't getting the bargain described in the post above.

My best advice is for all brides to shop around til you find what you love, but DO NOT purchase it that day. Unless it is a floor sample being offered for sale, your dress will not be gone the next day, or even a week later. This is an emotional time and the inclination is to order it RIGHT THEN! I know, we did this with my daughter's gown. We did not do this for my gown, and in the process we saved a TON. Weddings are VERY expensive, and you do want a beautiful gown, so don't skimp on what you want. But, there is no reason to be foolish about it either. You can probably find that gown lower online, or you can in most cases pay a more reasonable amount to the salon if they know you are comparing prices. Just make sure that any vendor you are considering, whether in-town or online, is well-respected by the brides in your area (again, I recommend consulting with other brides at theknot.com). I agree, too. I love Maggie Sottero dresses! They are some of the most beautiful dresses I have ever seen! Both the Destin and Felicity dresses you picked are gorgeous! I almost want to have another vow renewal just so I can pick out another dress, but I also really love mine!
