Wedding Dresses too much money

I know this might sound crazy but ive just never understood why people spend so much money on a dress you can never wear again. Ive seen many beautiful dresses and a shop and shops like windsor fashion that range from 20-400 dollars. I guess id rather spend the money on myself for my honeymoon than on a dress thats going to sit in my closet. Any other feelings on this.

Truthfully I agree 100% with you. I'm always amazed at how expensive not only wedding dresses are, but bridesmaid dresses as well. Ever seen a wedding where the bridesmaids had to buy a $350 dress? I think thats horrible when brides pick out excesively priced dresses and then make their girls pay for them. :confused3

I guess I just think that if someone is paying for a dress they should get more than a one time use out of it. My husband and I just let our girls pick out whatever dresses they wanted because of that and they found some beautiful black dresses at JCPenny for $75. They've all gotten multiple uses out of them since then.

As far as wedding dresses go my husband and I had planned to have a vow renewal in about 5-10 years (at Disney of course) so we figure I'll just wear the dress again then. At least I tell myself that. ;) It makes having spent $400 on it seem more sane! I understand the dress is important b/c it will be in every picture throughout the day and you'll look at the pictures all the time. Goodness knows ours are all over our place! However, there are so many look alike dresses that its easy to find one for cheaper than a grand I think.

For me, I guess because I know it's the only dress I'd pay that much money for, I had an easier time coming out with the money. The kind I don't understand are the dresses that go in the thousands. My dress was $475. My bridemaids dresses were $130, if I remember correctly...maybe a little less (I know it wasn't more than that).

Now what truly boggled my mind was the cost of the veil. It's tulle for crying out loud!! :rotfl: My veil was the same cost as my bridesmaids dresses. When I looked at it from that perspective, my dress seemed a whole lot more reasonable. :teeth:

I agree, wedding dresses are far too expensive. I would rather that money go towards the wedding or honeymoon. I am also letting my maid of honour pick whatever she wants to wear. Doesn't matter what colour or style (as long as it's not a white wedding dress!), it's up to her. I wish I could find a dress for under $500, but who knows if that will happen! Good luck dress hunting!

I also agree about the cost of the veil, Mary. My grandmother used to make dresses and hats and made my aunt's veil, so I think she will be making mine!

I was so lucky on my dress. I have a Bridal Outlet center in my town and I was able to get my Alfred Angelo dress for a total cost of $280 bucks. It was originally about 900 so I was happy. Now for finding a veil that I love. I won't spend more than 100 bucks on it but I think I am going to end up buying two at about forty each to figure it out. The ones in bridal shops are WAY to expensive.

I'm on the knot message boards alot and many of them have gone to ebay and found someone to design and make their veils at a VERY reasonable price! I would go on theknot and look around. :)

Also, I found my dream dress I think! Check out my "knot personal bio" here:

Yeah I thought dresses were overpriced when I looked, good thing I found a dress I absolutely loved that was actually a bridesmaid dress.

I got my dress on ebay for $350 because it was discontinued. I've seen wedding dress catalogues with the wholesale prices listed in there, and there's no way I would pay full price for one. The mark up on those things is incredible.

I tried to go cheap with the veil and now I regret it. The tulle is stiff and it doesn't fall nicely. I'll probably end up with a new one before the wedding.

Well, I am very excited about this so I think I have probably mentioned it before, but my dress was only 16.00!!! It is actually a prom dress (one of those that could pass as a wedding gown.) It was on clearance after prom. Also, considering I am getting married in florida in JUNE I figured a prom dress was the way to go. They make the prom dresses with lightweigh fabrics. Every "Wedding" dress I tried on was made with ridiculously heavy fabric and was at least three times as much as a prom dress.
Anyway, I am with you. Especially with an intimate wedding, you just aren't going to be wearing it very long. No since in paying so much for less than an hour. We are actually doing a dinner just so I can wear my dress longer. That is where my extra money went! Definitely a better decision

another option is to have someone make a dress for you. Mine is being made by my mom, and her best friend. I am so excited. The dress I originally found was by this really exclusive designer... $2000. I couldn't believe it, especially since it was made with nothing but satin and taffetta. I kid you not, that was ALL it was made out of. For $2000 it needed to have real diamonds on it or something. Anyhow, my mom just called me to tell me the dress looks almost exactly like the one I tried on, and the material only cost $100. Most of the time you can find a seamstress somewhere, and just buy a wedding dress pattern for $8 and see if they can make it.

I did that once for a prom dress when I was in high school. I found this one that I absolutely had to have. It was like 800.00 or something ridiculous so I just took the picture into a local seamstress and she took it from there. We modified it a little to be more unique, but basically it was the same and it only cost me 100.00.

I've searched and searched and it's hard to find dresses if you are a big girl. I FINALLY found one and the price tag is HIGH BUT for me to actually find a dress that I was able to try on AND LOVE since I am not a size 10, I guess it's ok. There is not too many places in Vegas that have nice plus size dresses and if I didn't go with the one I chose I would have had to drive to Cailfornia (more expenses) to find a dress. Don't get me wrong, the dress that I chose is AMAZING and if not that dress I would have tried to find something similar. SO with that being said. I LOVE the dress that I am getting and I am willing to pay the ridiculous amount that they are asking for AND my bridesmaids will be getting 15% off their dresses and I will also get the discount on my veil. Oh and here is a pic of the dress

It's by Demetrios and the final cost with tax comes out to $1300.00

Oh and I will be taking trips to grocery store in it and maybe cleaning the house. :teeth: :rotfl2:

I agree the wedding dresses are overpriced but while for some, it seems like a silly expense, for others like myself, it was important to have my dream dress. While, my dress was not inexpensive at all, in my opinion it was not a ridiculous amout of money either. I felt like Cinderella in it. I didnt get that feeling in any of the dresses I tried on at places like Davids Bridal and such (I did choose my bridesmaids dresses from DB to keep the costs for them down). I loved my gown, and the compliments on it were still coming even when I sent out our thank yous. I will remember the way I felt in that dress forever...even with the dress preserved and stored now!
Each couple chooses what they are willing to splurge on and what they are not willing to. For us, we saved in other areas in order to splurge on the things most important to us.

Im not sure whether American brides are aware of the high costs of wedding dresses that we have here in England. The cheapest dresses that I can find are around $810+ dollars. Ive seen a few end of line dresses that are cheaper...but never seem to be my size! Ive found a Maggie Sottero dress that's $1,800 in England but $1000 in a regular store in the US...ive even been quoted as low as $630 which includes shipping! Theres no way that I want to spend $1,800 on my dress so it seems that I will be ordering from the US.

Oh course I think wedding dresses are to expensive, the dress that I loved was $8000! Did I get it NOOOOOO! We did spend about $1600 for dress, veil, alterations, shoes, purse and jewelry and it was worth it. Luckily I got to wear my dress 3 times, wedding, MK photo shoot and party at home 6 weeks later. Now it's in a box preserved under my old bed :lol

That dress is SOOOOO beautiful! The dress I truly wanted was $1200...but I still love the dress that I ended up getting and it was only $500 (I say "only" as a relative term!)

First of all, yes I think wedding dresses in general are overpriced. However, I think it really comes down to two main things. 1) What you can afford in your wedding budget and 2) What your wedding priorities are.

For example, I personally couldn't imagine paying $2500 to ride in Cinderella's coach, but I know some brides live for that moment. I did pay a good amount for my gown, but that's where I put my priority if that makes sense. There's no right or wrong to it, it's just where you personally want to spend your money. To use my example, one bride might choose the coach and another might choose a more costly gown. If each has what they dreamed of, then good for them both! :)

I had exactly the same view - I'd rather have a widescreen tv than an expensive dress I said - and I looked to find one under £200 (that's about $400 to you guys) and I tried them on and nothing. And then I picked up a dress without looking at the price tag tried it on and fell in love - and every other dress pales in comparison - and once I had it on I didn't care what the price tag said - I would've maxed out my credit card to have it! Luckily it came in at £700 - which is still expensive for me - and my mum offered to pay for it for me... Isn't it wierd? I have never before done that - if something is over my budget I go without as it's only material items, but this dress just made me feel like a princess and I figured it's one day - and we're saving money by getting married at Disney so what the hell! Plus it's gonna look great in my MK portrait pictures :0)

I'm soooooooooo excited :0)

PS I've seen quite a few people on here shopping at Davids Bridal and dresses I'd put at near $4000 are coming in at less than $600 - now if only they shipped to the UK :0)
