Impartial input appreciated here.
This summer, I found a dress which I love. LOVE. I discovered in November that there's a store here in Toronto which sells the dress. Only two stores in all of Canada.

The dress costs $2800, Canadian. Plus tax, so add 14%.

While in Florida, I found that the Boca Raton Saks sells the dress for $2045. They'll give a discount of 10% if I get the Saks card. So we're down to about $1800 US. So add about 15%.

Now, to me, these are very big numbers. Especially for a dress. So my mom and I also went to David's Bridal, and I found a reasonable "Plan B" dress. Of course it's one of their high end dresses, for $1000. The dress is pretty, but feels very busy to me, but it makes me wonder if I do want a train. The LOVE dress does not have a train. But I still LOVE it.

I am mulling, and leaning towards a plan B dress that won't break the bank or make me feel guilty.

Cut to yesterday, when on a whim I searched ebay for the designer of my LOVE dress. What comes up? THE dress. In my size, if not a touch larger (all the better to take in with, my dear).

It's about $1500 as a "Buy it Now".

Do I buy this dress, knowing full well that my wedding is about 20 months away? Knowing that this dress was purchased for a cancelled wedding, and has not yet even been seen by the poor woman who bought it, since she "can't bear" to go to the salon and see it? (Note: I'm not a novice ebayer - she's got perfect feedback, and I'd insist that she buck up and provide a photo and look it over before I bought...)

I am really in a quandary. Is this Fate?

Is this Fate?

I trully believe if things were meant to happen they will. I am so glad you foudn the gown for a less expensive price! If you love the dress and it is the right size and everything, then it may be pixie dust intervening!:wizard:
I am sure everything will work out. Please keep us updated.

I say go for it. If you did go with the plan B dress, you'll never be quite as satisfied as you would be if you had the LOVE dress. You deserve to feel like a million bucks on your special day. If you've been thinking about the LOVE dress for this long, then you have much more attachment to it than any other dress you could find. You'd always feel like you were settling for something else.

As for the Ebay thing, as long as you take the normal precautions and check up on the seller, there should be no problem...and the dress has never been worn, and maybe you were meant to be the owner!!!

Good luck, I'd love to see the dress of your dreams!!

Fate !!!!!!

My dress cost $1200 back in 1997 & it was the ONLY dress for me....even my grandma said..."take it cause you know its the one you want & you wont be happy if you go with something else"....& she was right

Go with your heart & splurge a little....ITS YOUR BIG DAY!!!

Thanks ladies! I think it's Fate too!
I'm trying on the dress at the shop here in Toronto on Friday. If I like the way it looks, and the sizing on the dress on ebay looks like it'll be close enough to right, I'll be buying it!
I'll keep you posted, and add a picture if it all comes together.

if you go with the plan B dress i'm sure you'll look lovely. But you'll have an ounce of sadness about the other dress..there hsould be no sadness on your wedding day! buy the EBAY dress..hell by the next cheapest dream dress if you have to, just get the dream dress! princess:

Thanks again, you gals are great!
I just have this nagging "too soon to buy the dress!" voice in my head. I just tried clubbing it to silence with hot chocolate laced with coconut rum.
Seems to be working.

They say when you find the right dress "you know." If you are tallying votes I would tell you to do it. :) I got my dress at just over the year mark and I sooo can't wait to wear because I fell in love with it. Best wishes to you!

:rotfl: Great idea! That sounds so yummy right now!

Hello. I am the voice of reason. Do not buy a dress 20 months before your wedding. You have no idea what size you will be then. The alterations will end up costing way more than you are saving on the dress. Also, wedding details can and will change. Your LOVE dress may end up not fitting your theme. It will be on Ebay again, and the price will go down considerably over time. PLeas do not buy your dress yet.

Good points, all.
I know I will be smaller then than I am now. I just got done working on a cruise ship where I gained 15-20 lbs, and I'm in the process of "re-losing" it. (Lost that much a year before taking the job on the ship...)
The dress is a bias cut sheath dress, with a netting/beaded over dress thingy, so I wonder if cutting down the overlay might be more trouble than it's worth.
There are currently no details to change, but I always had my a "vintage-y" old Hollywood feel (not theme, just feel) in my mind's eye. This dress would suit that well. Its an aesthetic I've always liked. Probably always will.
I checked "completed listings" on ebay, and from what I saw, this dress has never been up for sale. Not saying it never will be again, of course.
I've also checked with the designer's office, and they have no plans to discontinue the dress, and will offer it at least until the end of 2007.
I suppose it'll all boil down to how I feel when I try the dress on this Friday. Frankly I've looked at a zillion dresses, and none of them come close to stirring this kind of feeling in me. But I still have that little voice.

Need more coconut rum.
Or sleep.
Or both.
