Websites for College Textbooks?

What are access codes and online codes for? The textbook or special information?

It could be a variety of things, but often it's online work related to the book. Often the homework has to be done at the website where you put in your code. The instructor can log in and see the work you do there. And sometimes it includes interacting with other students in your class online as well. (For example, you must write a couple paragraphs about that day's subject and you have to comment on at least three other student's paragraphs).

It also could include an e-copy of the book (I think my kids said that once).

I am taking grad classes with the university I work for. Last semester one of the classes I took, needed a book with a access code, said screw it and decided to wait to buy it from the bookstore seeing it was about $190 bucks after tax. Went to the class and the professor teaching told those who had it to return it and just to buy the access code from the bookstore for $75 after tax. There was a digital copy of the book with the code. I do not know if all books are like this but it is something to look into for the future.
Thanks for that info! I know his Calculus class was like this...prof said actual book was optional as long as they had the online portion. Spanish book was a different story - $226 for the bundle...all required.
