Web hosts???

Can anyone recommend a web hosting service? I'm considering setting up my own web site and am essentially clueless as to how to go about it. I read on a writing site that I need to find a web host to register a domain name.

I use mjzhosting.net. I haven't had any problem so far... and it's pretty cheap (the atomic plan is just $16/year).

If it's just a basic informational website that won't be used for business, then I would recommend:

Free hosting with no advertising on your site....you get up to 10 e-mails, 100MB of space, and 1GB of traffic per month. It does cost $25 per year to obtain and keep a domain name....or you could register the domain name for up to 5 years for $90 ($18 per year that way).

I don't think they have any tools to help you build a site, though. I've never had any problems and I've built 5 or 6 website using them:

FKJ2, Yes, you need to register your domain name and also you pay webhosting each month, Kind of like rent. I pay $99 a year, for registering it and hosting each month and I really like the company I am with. If you do not need a fancy site with alot of pages and autoresponders, and email and such, you can always get a free one. What are you planning on using your site for? And do you know HTML or are you planning on using front page?

Well, I'd like to use it for a small business (writing, editing, maybe greeting cards if I get that organized). I'm taking a class now that I think may lead to setting up a web page. I'm not looking to design anything extensive, at least for the moment, and for class purposes, we may use Dreamweaver. It's just all so new to me.

I would never have known that there are so many web hosts. Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I guess I have a lot of evaluating to do.

I can also recommend Dreamhost.com. I've only been with them a couple of months but the server runs very fast, I have had 100% up time, and they provide a lot of great services for either shared hosting or dedicated servers.

You do not need a web host to register domains. You can do that yourself at namecheap.com or godaddy.com. I use http://www.hostingconnection.net for my hosting. I have been using the for a while. They have excellent customer service and I pay under $10 per month for hosting. They helped me when I was just learning about web sites.

I also use godaddy. In fact I need to contact them to see if they have the ASP patch on their Unix servers, I want to add some .NET functionality to my site.

Yes, I think so. Many web hosting companies offer package deals which include a domain registration if you sign up for one year or more of service. This would save you the cost of a separate registration, and is usually easier and quicker on setup, since the hosting company and the resgistering company are one and the same.

When I signed up for my service with DreamHost, my web space was up and ready in about 6 hours and my domain went live within 12, and I signed up for both as a package deal online.

OK, next question. So, if I try to design the site myself (or use their help but essentially my design) how hard is it to go back and "tweak" it with changes/additions?

it depends on your host...

I update my daughter's website using Mozilla's HTML editor and FTPing the files up. Doesn't take me long at all. I know there's an easier way to transfer the files than to FTP them but FTP is F-R-E-E

I update my files locally using Evrsoft's editor. Then I FTP them up as well.

It depends on what you want to do with the site. Is it for business? If so, then you can pay to register a domain name. If you are just looking to make a personal site for photos, family info, etc. Look at your ISP. I use Comcast and they have a free, easy to use service that is part of your subscription. Your domain name will be part of the ISP's address. Good Luck
