Now, my running/weather concerns are FAR inferior to anything anyone is experiencing from Issac right now. But I do have a question for my fellow DIS runners.

Supposed to run 8 miles this weekend - please help me find the best option! I need a 2 hour window and preferably between 7a-8:30p (sun starts to sink by around 7:45 and sometimes I can find shadows to run in by 7:30pm).
Saturday
7am - 71 degrees with 87% humidity 30% chance scattered T-storms
10am - 76 ("feels like 79) with 71% humidity "mostly cloudy" and 20% chance precip
1pm - 80 ("feels like 83) with 54% humidity - 30% chance "few showers"
6pm - 80 ("feels like 81) with 52% humidity - 30% chance "Isolated T-storms"

Sunday:
Rain chances between 40-60% all day, with temps between 70-80 and humidity in the 60-90% range!

Monday - rain forecast worse.

Any advice on running in the rain? Or do i suck it up and run on the treadmill? Or push it back a week? I don't want to have wet feet and blisters.... The only other possible option I see is getting up to be out there by 6am - when it's still "dark" and the rain chance is 10%, temp is 72 but the humidity is still 84%. :confused3

So, if you come into the race weekend and find a similar forecast what are you going to do?

Head out in the morning and have a great run. Wear a visor or hat to keep any rain that falls from hitting your face. Wear tech clothing to help shed water and as you run try to avoid puddles. Running in the rain can be fun and refreshing if you let it be. Saying all this, if you hear thunder, get into shelter and let that cell pass - or hit the treadmill. You do not want to mess with lightning. So hitting this from the opposite side, the second you hear thunder, run for the mill and stay dry.

For the record, this looks like a rather cool day for Gulf Coast runners. Through August, we have dew points in the mid 70's and lows in the upper 70's to lower 80's. Even though we see it for a 6-12 week period, it is still brutal. Slow up and do not cook yourself in the first mile.

I gess I should add that if you do go out and are in a shower situation where you hit a light rain followed by sun be prepared for the heat blast. The humidity can be brutal as you run into the sunny area with wet ground.

I rambled and did not actually say what to do... I would head out the do and have fun

I say go for whatever option will allow you to reach your goal mileage. If that just happens to be the treadmill go for it. I never trained in rain before my first (and so far only) rainy race and it wasn't close to as bad as I had imagined. Just like Coach said, you learn to just work with the conditions you are presented. In some ways, having a new challenge ends up making the run so much more interesting that you get to your goal a lot faster.

Good Luck! :)

Unless conditions are going to be totally intolerable, just head out at 7am and get it done.

As for myself, I would go out at 5:00AM. I head out all times of the day or night without eating first to having a bagel to even eating a spaghetti dinner then out after 1 hour. I experiment just to see how my body reacts.

Good luck and be safe.

Well, as for the question about race day my solution is this:

I'm not even considering the possibility of rain until the week before the race. that being said, the only thing I know for certain about race day is that it will be dark.

Anyhow, I'll probably go out at night since that's my favorite time to run, but I guess I was curious as to a)what to wear to run in the rain and b) what do you think of 7am 71 degrees headed towards sunshine and 80% humidity versus 6pm 80 degrees headed towards sundown and 58% humidity. I only started paying attention to the weathers effect on my running recently. Before that I used to just run after work (7ish) in whatever heat or sun was out then (usually closer to 80 or more). I went out a few weeks ago at 8 am on a weekend and 63 degrees not realizing it was so humid and the sun became so hot and i was taken by surprise at how different it felt than what I was expecting.

Loving the learning process of training!

I live in the Pacific Northwest so I know I will be doing ALOT of my training in the rain.

I have under armor tech shirt and pants. I run in Saucony shoes and have moisture wicking socks. I will probably get a under armor lightweight jacket for those colder days come december.

I understand the not running in puddles and get out of the weather if there is lightening. How long can I run before I am looking at causing problems with the feet in the rain? My shoes fit well and no problems so far with blisters. Should I realistically be able to do most of my 30-60 min runs with no problem and my long runs up to 10 miles if I get out of the shoes and get my feet dried right away?

I am thinking of getting a second pair of shoes, eventhough I don't need them yet, so I can be sure they dry out completely before I wear them again.

You just have to experiment with what you wear. We are all different and some of us need more layers than others. If it is raining, I always wear a jacket. If anything to protect my phone. But it is nice and airy so that I can take it off and put it around my waist without dreading it. Because chafing is an issue, keep that in mind when you choose what to wear. I personally would never wear shorts during a run in rain or high humidity.

I hope your run went well!
