Hi!
My 5 year old DD loves to wear dresses not the princess ones but dresses in general. That's just about the only thing she'll wear, especially in the summer. I was wondering how that would be for the parks or more importantly the rides. Would it get caught up in anything or interfere with straps, etc...
Thanks for the info!

shouldn't be an issue, i wear dresses all t.. wait.. forget that.

I think it would not be a problem at all. My niece sometimes wears sundresses in the parks. You may wish to have her wear a pair of bike shorts underneath or something similar so she doesn't have worry about remaining covered getting in and out of the ride seats.

DD7 has been wearing sundresses to the parks since she was about 4 - she's never had a problem!

A sun dress would certainly keep her cooler. Add a pair of thin cotton shorts under it for modesty when getting in & out of rides & you should have no problems. Now that I think about it I may buy myself a sundress to keep cool. I wore skorts onour last trip & they worked very well. If she would wear a skort it could be another option. My DD wore skorts on our last trip that had nice full skirts that you could not tell were skorts.

I'm thinking along the same lines for my 4yo. Seems like a cotton dress or top & skirt would be cool & comfy. I found some great little cotton skirts at Penney's - they have cotton knit shorts underneath and it's all sewn together. There were several colors to choose from and tops to match. I caught them on sale 2 for $10 but I don't think the regular price was much more. You may want to try those. HTH:)

ETA I also saw cotton knit shorts in the little girl's dept. at Walmart that looked very much like bike shorts and they had a variety of colors. I'm thinking of getting some to go under dresses for DD for both the modesty issue and to help prevent any chafing on her inner thighs. She's never had a problem with that before but I worry that with so much walking it could become a problem.

On DD(9)'s first trip to the world she was 3. She wore nothing but sundresses and had no problems. The only problem I can see with a 5 year old, is maybe some chaffing. DD(3) did not do very much walking, she spent most of her traveling time in a stroller.

I just had to jump in here to say I wore a long skirt at least half the time on our last trip and it was very comfy. And chaffing? Get some Body Glide at a sports store - no worries! :)

Wow!
Thanks for the great, quick replies!! And for the tips for JCPenney and Walmart.
I'm glad to hear that it shouldn't be a problem because then that means less melt downs!:yay:

I SWEAR by wearing skirts to WDW. So much cooler than shorts and no issues with comfort or chafing. I have two basic styles - a knit with a drawstring waist and a lightweight cotton wrap - both about knee length. I have no trouble getting in or out of rides and flashing, and no issues with them getting in the way as they aren't full enough to fly up or anything. I switched to skirts probably three or four years ago (and we go 2-3 times a year). Best thing I ever did!

There are many women and girls who wear dresses to Disney, whether for religious reasons, or just for comfort. I've never seen anyone have a problem getting on or off rides. Now miniskirts, that's a whole other conversation!

I wear dresses all the time to WDW and have never had a problem getting on or off rides. DD also wore them when she was smaller and did fine with them. I'm sure I was much more comfortable in a dress the day I got totally soaked on Kali River Rapids than I would have been in pants or shorts. I guess my only caution to you would be to use plenty of sunscreen if you're wearing a sundress.....don't want to have the painful sunburn set in unnecessarily. ::MinnieMo

I always wear skirts to the parks and they are very comfortable and cool. My DD always wore them and still does as an adult. Lightweight dress, comfy shoes and a magical day. Sounds great.

We are Six Flags season pass holders and my DD is 6 and loves her dresses. We have never had any problems with them getting in the way of any restraints. She does wear a pair of cotton shorts under the dresses. She also wears her normal sandals (they are a sport type sandal, not dressy) to the parks with no problems. The botom line is it needs to be something comfortable for the kiddo's.

I have no idea how I got such a girly DD. I am a jeans and t-shirt gal myself.

This thread is great. It never occurred to me that dresses could be an issue. I have got almost all dresses for my dd19mo and dd4 for our up and coming trip. my reasons were that I thought it would be cooler, easier (and therefore quicker) for eldest to dress herself and quicker for toilet stops. also if you stay out for dinner dresses are prettier. I have bought some shorts and tops for them but eldest is dress mad at the mo!
I also don't do casual (shorts & tshirts) at all and will probably be in my summer skirts and tops with cycle shorts underneath.
I started a thread on the uk board about this a while back as I was concerned about the fact that I might look overdressed and some of the posts were hillarious when some disers said what they had seen some females wearing at wdw including a woman nursing a newborn walking around epcot in stilletoes! anything goes apparently!

I often wear skirts at WDW & have never had a problem flashing or chafing. I usually wear the longer, broomstick style guaze skirt. I find myself wearing them more & more. They are so comfortable.

My girls always wear dresses to the parks. Even my 9 year old who will no longer wear dresses to school, switches to dresses in WDW. It's not an issue at all.
