A friend called yesterday and said she had free tickets to the circus, and asked us if we wanted to go.

I asked Shrek and he replied..."I don't know, I've never been to a circus."

What? :crazy2:

So off we go!

We got there about 30 minutes before the show started. (Note to the city of Orlando, if you want people to go downtown, you might want to rethink the $10 fee to park in the city owned garages!)

The first thing I noticed outside was the PETA people. I thought to myself "Should we be going in?" But we went in and I was shocked at the amount of merchandise the circus had to sell! My friends husband works for the Arena, and he told us they brought in about 50 specialty stands where they sell the souvenirs, popcorn, cotton candy, and other various circus stuff. The arena is allowed to sell dogs, soda, chips etc. I asked about prices....a box of popcorn $7 and a bag of cotton candy $10! They had all the kids down on the floor getting dressed up like clowns for photos, they brought out an elephant who painted some "art" and lots of other activities before the show started. I thought this was pretty cool.

Right before the show started they asked everyone to stand. They played the Star Spangled Banner as an elephant with a woman on top with a large American Flag walked around the arena. Very nice I thought!:thumbsup2

So the show starts. It's not the circus I remembered as a kid. It, like just about everything these days, had to have a theme! (When did the circus theme go out of style???) There was a good girl, her name had something to do with flying, and the bad guy, Mr. Gravity. There were a lot of small magic acts, cutting clowns in half etc. The usual animal acts, my favorite was the dog show. Do you know there is one woman who does nothing but put cute little evening gowns on poodles? :rotfl2: That was fun to watch.

I started thinking about the animals, and as I watched them they just didn't seem to be very happy. I don't know, can you tell if an elephant is happy? Not sure, but their eyes just looked so sad...

Overall it was a fun evening, it was a childhood memory for me, and a first time for Shrek! It was fun watching him laugh at some of the acts. But I don't think I will ever go back. I just don't think some animal needs to live in a cage so I can drop some cash to watch it jump through a hoop. And I miss the circus theme....Thunder and Blazes, the big parade as they came out for the first time...all the old fun stuff. Oh well, times change....

Ocassionally there'll be a circus that comes along where the people treat the animals like family, and from time to time they're allowed to come out of the cages to roam "freely"......but unfortunately this isn't always the case. I know how you feel about animals looking sad. That bothers me too, especially when the elephanties look sad. :sad1:

You were expecting the 1987 Star of Indiana to come out with a pink elephant, weren't you? ;)

We went to Barnum and Baileys in Cleveland. When we came out there were fliers on the cars. I went to the website and they had videos of them mistreating the elephants. I was horrified. Truly disturbing! We wont go
ever again. I dont know who was mistreating the animals maybe it wasnt Barnum. They must do something to get them to do what they want them to do.

We go to shows like the Chinese and Japanese acrobats now. They are amazing! Great shows!!

Well kind of! :confused3

God was that a drug induced mess or what? That and the UFO show! :rotfl2:

It was definitely something DCI had never seen before. But considering their circumstances, I thought they played well.

And can you believe there wasn't even a trapezes act?:confused3

OK I just watched some stuff on Youtube....no more circus for me!

We don't do that type of circus either.
I have taken the kids to the Big Apple Circus. lots of clowns and trapeze, one ring, very fun circus, lots of clown antics the kids loved it

WTH?!?
No trapeze act, hey, that's no circus. :sad2:

Cotton candy, $10.? :faint:

Damn shame.

LOL, we have paid $10 for cotton candy at disney on ice........LOL, it did come in a big bucket though hehe..........my kids keep their crayons in it now.
the most expensive piece of plastic:thumbsup2

I think I have a problem with exotic animals in the circus. Tigers, elephants, etc. are not meant to be trained/tamed/paraded around an arena.:guilty: Dogs, probably not so bad. Don't get me wrong - I am against the mistreatment of ANY animal - but I don't think exotic animals should be exploited that way.

We took DS to the circus when he was 4 or 5. VIP seats, the whole shebang. BUT the circus always comes to town the first week of August, which is now our WDW time. Better to go to WDW than the circus. Heck, the cost is about the same! :rotfl2:

I can't read or look at or hear anything
with animals getting mistreated.

We often switch the channel if anything comes on with animals in peril.

It just upsets me for days. :guilty:

Consequently we give to about 6 different
animal rights groups and shelters.

I was going to say something snarky about you caring..but in all seriousness...it's so sweet.

WOW -- you're tender-hearted. Bless you, Sweetie!

Well, I have heard that some plastic out there is mighty high priced. ;)

I took our foster kids and Jared was I think 2 to the circus in Baltimore once. I wasn't impressed felt Similar to Plain ole head.

We went to Dollywood last yr or the yr before. They had the chinese acrobats. It was very cool! However, I went home and researched how the girls are picked and treated... I don't recommend reading about it if you want to enjoy another show. Don't get me wrong... they are amazingly talented, but the animals are probably treated better!

I went to a circus once as a kid. I cried so much at the animals, that I had to leave. (Went with a group, the chaperone was not impressed). I hated it and have never gone to another one.

Took me years to go to Cirque, even though I knew it had nothing to do with the traditional circus.

I really think they should be outlawed. Yeah. I know. I'm a freak, but I so hated it. :(

Don't get me wrong--Juggling chihuahuas is supreme-o fun.............but I hate when other animals get mistreated. :upsidedow

Oh the poodle lady had chihuahuas too! Dressed up like Spanish ladies of course! Freaking Hysterical! :rotfl2:

I so wish I would have taken a camera, this woman reminded me of Tammy Faye!
