OhMyGosh! Why must everything be a debate these days?

I am not offended by the scene.

What I AM offended by is the amount of money I am paying for our trip to have yet another attraction closed down.

Grew up with Disneyland...was a local all my life. 61 years. The attraction did not effect me, nor my children!

There is no debate...it's changing. Also, just because it didn't affect you or your kids doesn't mean it doesn't affect others. While I, like you, don't have a problem with the scene, someone must have had a problem with it.

Oh, and welcome to the DIS!

Going off of the poll, most are not offended. So, coddle the few who are... makes no sense.

Reduce my price and I'll hush, Disney.

@HopperFan Then there really should be an option for "It doesn't offend me personally, but I don't mind if they replace it". I think the votes would be different. :) As it stands, I think people may view a vote for it doesn't offend me to also mean they don't want it to change, you know?

The OP set the parameters of what they were asking. I did not read it at all that I was to factor in the change one way or another. I thought it was a very straight forward question.

That's why I actually haven't voted on this poll. It did not bother me, but I am actually glad it is being replaced.

As I stated at length in the other thread that is now closed, I find it to be, at best, tasteless and crass to depict women as sex slaves (which is what they are about to become). I also mentioned that the 1970's were very different as far as feminism and women's rights and that allowed this to be depicted without a stir. I am glad it is being changed but I (and no one else that I'm aware of) did not call for it.

So was I bothered by it, no, but as I'm glad it is changing, I feel like that's not really the right answer for this poll.

THIS. There are many polls on these boards I do not participate in because none of the options work for me. I don't read anything into folks polls, I look at their question and their answers. If I think I need another option for me to answer, I just don't vote.

The difference is, kids don't look up to Gaston and think he's cool. They know he's the "bad guy" and expect him to behave accordingly. But that line is blurred in the case of the PotC pirates. Captain Hook? Definitely bad guy. Jack Sparrow? Not so much. And kids/people equate the PotC pirates with the "good/funny" kind instead of the villainous kind.
I think you made some really good points in your post!! To this point above, though...

By this logic, the ride should probably be shut down. These "good guys" are burning down a city, redefining drunk and disorderly, etc. We shouldn't want the kids to see any of this...

The phrase "teachable moment" might be overused, but I think it applies here. I know I had conversations with my kids when they started asking "why are they burning everything?!" Same when they asked me what "auction a bride" meant.

I guess I'm just personally a fan of facing these things and having conversations, rather than erasing them or hiding them.

I'm one of those people who was always bothered by the scene because I knew that was reality back in that time. As a woman, it just made me immensely uncomfortable due to the concept that the women were being auctioned off as a commodity. First time I saw it, I couldn't get it out of my head for a while. While I am bothered by that scence, I don't think it was necessary to change it since it is history. What I do whenever I rode POC is that I would avert my head and just don't look at that scene. I've been on it so many times that I know when it is coming.

I don't find it offensive. To me, it is a ride, nothing more. It depicts something that may well have actually happened. There are many references to pirates taking prisoners, and selling them off as slaves. I don't think that the ride scene, in any way, condones that behavior, it simple depicts what may well have actually happened. We can't erase the past, what has happened has happened. Being aware of it is probably the best way to make sure it doesn't happen again. I see no harm in the scene being there.

I'm not going to launch a protest, or refuse to go to Disney because they removed it, but given my choice, I would leave it be.

Nah. They are a great travel agency. I'm sure they would be happy to find you a different vacation spot.

Nah...my agent has invested a lot of time and planning into this trip as well as establishing a wonderful relationship with me. First time to WDW. If I wanted a different vacation spot, I would have chosen such.

At least I will get to experience the auction scene one last time before the Reno in 2018!

Pete Werner, you were correct in your video when you said how painful it was to see your Disboards become so negative. I concur, Sir.

But you've only been a member since June 20th? Has it gone downhill so fast?

I've been reading the forum as a guest for quite a long time. Registered a few weeks ago.
The vibe here could definitely be improved...I have read more debating in threads, than I have read threads assisting others. Just my humble opinion.

Have a great evening!

Negative on this topic or in general? I think this has been true since... Wait... when did I join?? ;)

Despite that, I still get good info here. Though as I've been saying, more and more these days there are many other sources...

Interesting threads you chose as your first two to post in.

Not that one opinion surprises me, given the other. :rolleyes2

:thumbsup2 Agreed! The other sources have a nice Zen to them.

So much of :chat: going on here.

Hall of Presidents... perfect example.

The helpful stuff is still there.

But I wonder how much of this feeling is because of how much the info threads are now being consolidated... a greater proportion of THREADS might be "debating" now vs. "helping", but perhaps the proportion of POSTS is similar...?

Just a thought.
