So maybe we just got lucky, but here's how it worked - Friday (June 29) was an EMH for resort guests (we were staying at DLH) so we went to the front gate of DCA at about 6:45. When the doors opened at 7:00, everyone went to Carsland. We thought we'd try an alternate strategy, so we went the other direction.
At 7:05 we walked onto Soarin' Over California (there were a total of 8 people on the entire ride). Then at 7:15 we walked onto Tower of Terror (we were the first of the day and there were only 10 people in our entire elevator).
At about 7:40 we headed to Carsland. We walked onto Mater's Junkyard Jamboree then headed to Radiator Springs Racers. The standby line was 40 minutes, which didn't sound too bad relatively speaking, but the single rider line said 10 minutes so we got in it. By that time the big rush of earlybirds was apparently over... we walked through the line, got to the cars, and heard "single rider" - my friend went into the front seat - and again "single rider" - I was in the back seat. We were in the same car and had no wait at all.
When we got off, the park had just opened to everyone and the single rider line was already up to 30 minutes. We got in it thinking we would ride again, but the ride broke down so we bailed out. We never rode again this trip because there were no more EMH for DCA and we couldn't stomach spending half a day in line... We did try to go early Sunday (8:00) but the ride was down again. Hmmm...
I should say that the ride was SPECTACULAR - all the best of Disney in my opinion. Again I don't know if we just got lucky, but if you are willing, the single rider line during EMH seems to be a good alternative!!
