We are at my brother's house now with electricity and a/c! Thank goodness!

The storm was scary at times, the gusting winds sounded like a freight train. I can't imagine what it was like for the folks that got hit the hardest. I was really worried about the black olive trees falling on our house, but thankfully that didn't happen. The trees did take a serious beating though, the top of one snapped in half and it is hanging from the lower branches. Our front yard is a total mess, created by the trees.

We lost power around 1:15 a.m. Saturday night. We decided to leave and came down to Miami to stay with my family last night. My DH was having some difficulty with his asthma, but nothing serious. We almost hit a tree as we were trying to make our way to the Turnpike. DH couldn't see it, but I screamed and he slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting it.

There are 54 schools in Broward county that are without power, so I don't know when the kids will return to school. I'm hoping that our electricity gets restored really soon.

My younger brother and his wife (in S. Miami) don't have electricity, only 4 homes on their block are without power due to a transformer exploding. My SIL keeps calling FPL and she was told that it could take up to 2 weeks for their power to be restored.

Anyway, I'll post pics of the trees when we have power at home. This is all a major inconvenience for us, but things could have definitely been worse. ::yes::

Glad to hear your safe !!!

Thankyou so much for the update. I'm SOOOOOOOO glad things are better than expected for so many people. I was waiting to hear about the loss of life being high, and thank goodness it wasn't.

Hi Rita,

I'm also glad to hear that you made it through okay. Are you preparing for Ivan though now? Stay safe!

Rose

Glad things turned out so well, Rita!! Hope your power is restored quickly also.

Glad to hear you made it through safely! Hopefully your power gets turned on quickly!

Thanks!

We are home now and have ELECTRICITY!!!!!!!!!!!! My neighbor called us this morning to let us know. My brother in S. Miami still doesn't have power. We did see two trucks from IL Power on our way home on the Turnpike, we waved at the guys.

Our city does have crews cleaning/picking up any debris along curbside, but NOT anything on private property. They came down our block shortly after we got home, so we had to run out there to haul as much of the branches to the curb as we could. It's so hot and humid, I hate it.:faint:

We started cleaning up the mess from the trees outside and we have a LOT of work to do. We got our first estimate to cut down the branches that snapped/broke and are now hanging in the tree, and the top of the other tree, they wanted $800.  We have called other companies for estimates, but they haven't called yet.

The schools will reopen tomorrow, so that will give me more time to get things in order outside.

I hope that Ivan doesn't come this way, I don't want to go through this again.
