Before we have our dessert on Christmas day the entire extended family gathers around the table as we light the candles on the cake. The group of us then sings out the Happy Birthday song to Jesus. The kids blow out the candles and the cake is cut and dessert is served.

What special traditions did you do with your family today?

Happy Birthday Jesus!:D

We do not have any special traditions. But I really do like yours!

I have done that but we don't every year. You've reminded me to start it again.

We have a tradition of driving around town the night before Christmas Eve to look at lights. We usually drive by the same houses each year. The kid's eat take-out in the car, we beep-beep at the houses we know. This year we were out for 2 hours.

We have a big extended family Christmas Eve party. We have over 100 people, and I think last night we must have had 30 kids there under the age of 10!

My mother makes a little welcome speech during the party, and we have a rememberance of any family members who have passed away in the previous year. Then she introduces the new babies and/or brides/grooms that have been added, and then we always sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.

My uncle dresses up as Santa Claus and makes an appearance, which sends the little ones into a flurry of excitement.

This year, he called all the parents ahead of time, to find out what each child's special present was. He whipped out a looooooong list, with each child's name on it, and called them, one by one, to come sit on his knee.

On Christmas morning, we have breakfast before we open any gifts. When the boys were smaller it was a real pain because everything had to be wrapped, but now I love the tradition. I always bake a special coffee cake, we put a candle in it and sing.

My parents did this with my sister and I, too. Just helps us keep our focus on the reason we celebrate!

We celebrated Jesus' birthday with a birthday party on Sunday. We read a Christmas story, had cake and sung Happy Birthday to Jesus.

I got a "Happy Birthday, Jesus" cake from the bakery and used that as the centerpiece for the dining room table. I had planned on having the grandchildren sing Happy Birthday to Jesus before we cut into it, but someone cut into it while I was out of the room so we didn't get to do that. :(

John Tesh announced that his wife started that tradition for him and I thought it was just awesome. I made a quick cake Christmas Eve for that purpose only!

Thanks for sharing your tradition with us, wovenwonder!

Hey there! We sing happy birthday to Jesus on Christmas morning first thing. We stand around the tree and sing who-style, holding hands......we also love advent and do alot of advent activities. Happy Christmas!

Well, I didn't have a cake and I didn't think about doing it on Christmas Eve with my parents and the kids, but I did sing Happy Birthday to Jesus yesterday.

These are all great ideas, I'll have to remember to do some of them next year!! I love the cake idea!:D

What a wonderful tradition! Sounds like it was a fun time! Can't wait to hear the details.

A latvian tradition is that before children can receive their gifts, they have to do some sort of performance. Mostly it is reciting a poem, or playing a musical instrument. I had to do it when I was little, and of course my kids have to do it now too!
