We Really Should Have Listened to Miss Piggy: Deluxe Dining January 2009

We headed over to the Grand Floridian a little early for our 6:00 reservation so we could explore a little. I swear we were in here before – maybe years ago – but DH thinks I’m losing it, says we’ve never been. Maybe it’s because I spend too much time on the DisBoards…and I’ve seen so many pictures of everything, I get the déjà vu when I haven’t really been there. Whatever…it’s a beautiful resort…the grounds were so pretty, but a lot of the flowers were covered by plastic sheeting due to the crazy freezing temperatures:

I’m not sure if I’d want to stay there – it’s just a little over-the-top fussy looking to me, but DH thinks we should try it at some point, maybe on another quick 2-day jaunt like this one. He really, really liked the monorail convenience: not having to drive/park at all on this little trip since we only went to MK & Epcot. I have to agree with him, the monorail really cuts down on the bite travel takes out of your time.

Well, on to the food. We went to check in at about 5:50, following the “check in 10 minutes ahead” suggestion. Wasn’t necessary, at all – they seated us immediately. The place was EMPTY. I mean super-duper EMPTY. Don’t think there was 10 other people eating in there while we were there. You can see all the empty seats behind DH, and we were actually seated fairly close to the front of the restaurant…there were tons of empty tables behind me, in the main part of the place:

It stayed empty the entire time we were there. So, needless to say, we got really good service since we were practically the only diners there! I think our water glasses were refilled every time we took a sip…

For drinks, DH had the Blue Moon beer, and I had the Blackberry Mojito…o.k., I’m typically a slushy-frozen-umbrella-beverage type. But as cold as it was, I just could not bring myself to order frozen slushies. When I commented on that, the waitress suggested the blackberry mojito. Wowzers, the mojito is my new favorite drink! That drink was tremendous…honestly, it was the first time I’ve been very, very tempted at WDW to get a refill on an adult beverage. Usually the prices on their drinks is enough to keep me firmly at one. But, I did decide to stick with one, here, but mainly because I decided not to fill up on beverages, and also the fact we knew we would probably go back to the Contemporary Club and get free cordials later while watching the MK fireworks. Well, I refrained from a refill. But I was REALLY tempted. Dee-lish beverage. DH liked his Blue Moon, but then, it was beer. Of course he liked it.

The waiter brought out the bread basket & butter…there was a nice variety in here:
grandfloridiancafebreadbasketandsea.jpg

The breads with raisins or currants or whatever it was were very tasty. But we knew there was much more to come, so we really just nibbled a bit on this. For appies, I was still cold, so went for the Onion Soup:
grandfloridiancafeonionsoup.jpg

This was good, but I shouldn’t have ordered it in the same trip as having the Le Chefs de France Fr. Onion Soup…not near as good as Le Chefs. I ate most of it, though.
DH went for the Lobster Salad appy…and he was marvelously UNDERwhelmed by this dish. Thought the lobster part was spectacularly tasteless. I reminded him that almost every time we’ve had lobster he’s thought it mostly tasteless (we much prefer crab!) Anyway, he only ate a little of this, helped me with my onion soup & returned to the bread basket some.

He did much better with his entrée: he ordered the shrimp & prosciutto fettucine. On a small taste, I thought it was maybe too much garlic, but he loved it. Just about licked the bowl clean:

I was in the mood for a steak, so I ordered the New York strip, which came with some green beans and mashed potatoes.
grandfloridiancafenewyorkstrip.jpg

The steak was seasoned well & cooked perfectly. The beans were fresh, and the taters were tasty…I finished most of the steak (DH polished it off) but only about ½ the beans & taters. I was getting full, but wanted room for dessert.

The waitress brought over a sampler platter to show us what the desserts were…they all looked spectacular. As we sat there debating which to choose, she suggested we just order the sampler platter…so we did:
grandfloridancafedessertsampler.jpg

Isn’t that a cute presentation with the little sign and all the mickey sprinkles, plus the artful little swooshies of syrup or sauce dribbled by each dessert ( well, except the little blob of (s)lime syrup next to the key lime pie…DH’s description of what that looked like almost put off my appetite. Almost…but I do agree, they could work on the syrup-décor for that corner, lol. The waitress assured us the little “celebrate today” easel thingy was completely edible (looked like it was made from almond paste or something like that.) So anyway, Top left, that’s Key lime pie…was o.k. but not the best we’ve had. Then clockwise, that’s new york style lemon cheesecake topped with a raspberry…this was wonderful tasting, we finished most of it. Next, bottom right, is Tiramisu…ooh – mouthwatering delicious. We finished that one completely! Bottom left, is chocolate-hazelnut mousse cake: OMG, this was outstanding. Way too rich, though…we really, really, wanted to eat all of this but just could not finish it. I’d say the tiramisu & chocolate mousse cake about tied for best here…delicious. And I really like being able to get a sampler that lets you taste multiple desserts. Although, once again, could not finish the dessert. We didn’t even try a bit of the Celebrate Today sign…too full.

Do not know why this place was soooo empty. Maybe everyone was eating late because parks were only staying open until 8 or 9 that night? Just was amazed at how empty the place was…when we left, there was about 6 employees – waiters, bus people & greeters – all standing near the entrance chatting quietly because there was obviously nothing for them to do (they all thanked us for coming & wished us a wonderful evening.) We’d definitely come back…give it a 9 out of 10 (taking it down a notch for the appetizers not being all-that.) If we'd been just on the regular DDP, like we normally are, there would have been no appies for us...I would give it a 10 out of 10 on a no-appy menu. Because our entrees, drinks, desserts & service were all 10s. We would go back in a flash...definitely on our list of good place for a steak, too.

So, cost here at the GF Café was one table service each on the DxDDP…was very well worth it, we thought. Actually cash cost without the alcohol would have been $81.80. (drinks were $5.75 for the Blue Moon beer and $8.25 for the blackberry mojito.)

I think this place is hit or miss and for us it was a total miss, one of the worst meals of our trip.:sad2: Funny we had the same entrees as well, glad you had a great meal!!!:goodvibes

Great reviews! It seems your DH and I have some similar tastes in food; I love the shrimp/ prosciutto pasta at GFC and the mahi mahi at Coral Reef. ::yes:: I think CM's is a very Disney way to start the day too. :goodvibes

he loved that Mahi Mahi -- me, not so much. But then I'm not so into fishy-tasting fish...I like my fish to taste like crab:lmao:

Final meal…Breakfast on Departure Day

So, we were checking out on Thursday morning after our 2 day get-away trip to WDW. But first, we hopped the monorail to the Polynesian for breakfast at the Kona Café.

There was a huge line for Ohana’…but none for Kona, thank heavens. It was nice and peaceful there…we were ready for an “adult” breakfast, and that’s the place to go!

Well, since we were on the DxDDP, the waiter told us right off the bat that we get two beverages on the Deluxe, so we could have the regular coffee (or tea, soft drink, or milk) for one beverage and our choice of their juice offerings as our 2nd bev…or we could use both drinks to get a pot of French-press Kona coffee (usually costs $7.50 a pot.) He said we could get one using one person’s double-drink allotment, and then each get a juice; or we could each get our own pot if we really loved coffee. We could then get to-go cups for any left over coffee. Each pot has 2 ½ to 3 cups of coffee. We typically drink about 2 cups each with breakfast, so we said heck yes on the fancy coffee. It was well worth it…very, very good coffee and we did each have at least a cup left to take in our to-go cups. Here’s that lovely coffee:
Konacafepressedpotcoffee.jpg

DH had been looking forward to this breakfast ever since I read him menus a month ago and he found out he could get steak & eggs…so that’s exactly what he ordered:
Konacafesteakandeggs.jpg

That’s about a 5 oz. New York strip, cooked to order (rare, the way he likes ‘em), sunny side up eggs (cooked perfectly), a gigantic pile of breakfast potatoes (spicy & good), a biscuit (he said so-so without gravy) and a slice of pineapple. He gobbled this meal down, leaving only a few taters & part of the biscuit because he was soon full.

Now for mine…we’ve had the much ballyhooed Tonga toast from Captain Cooks/Poly in the past, but we all found it was way too sweet to finish even one serving between DH, DD & myself. I’ve heard rave reviews of the Kona pancakes with pineapple & macadamia nut butter, and the reports never seemed to say they were too sweet. Well, I love pineapple, and I loved the macadamia nut butter served with the Hawaiian bread at Kona dinners, so I figured I had a good chance of liking those pancakes, so I went for the Big Kahuna breakfast:
KonacafeBigKahunabreakfast.jpg

Oh, my this was a treat. Starting at the very top, center, that triangle sticking out above the pancakes is cinnamon French toast, actually was two triangles, so about one texas-toast size slice cut in half. The fr. toast was very tasty, soft, hot and fresh. Just below that is those LUSCIOUS pancakes with the pineapple and macadamia nuts…those pancakes were F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S! I could have eaten those all day. Then there's my eggs, over easy (cooked perfectly), some breakfast taters (spicy, hot & good), a sausage and some bacon. Wowzers, loved this breakfast. I ate nearly every bit of it (except for sharing a bite or two with DH…but not much.) This was really, really good - the best breakfast I've had in a restaurant in a very long time (we go to IHOP and Village Inn on a fairly regular basis...the foods at Kona beat them hands-down. They were cooked exactly as ordered, and that rarely happens...seems like if your eggs are cooked properly, the pancakes are dry, etc.)

Service was excellent (again, restaurant was almost empty so we had great service.) Food was cooked well, and was very good. We’d return in a flash – give these breakfasts a 10 out of 10. Price on the DxDDP was one table service credit each. Had we paid cash, it would have been $44.16.

That was it, our final meal in our 2 day DxDDP experiment…we decided it was really fun to try the deluxe, but never, ever again (probably) Two reasons…one, it does take a lot of time to eat three table service meals a day, even with staying in a monorail restaurant & using all monorail hotel & monorail park restaurants to minimize our travel times...it was actually very convenient for us but still takes minimum of 4-5 hours a day to do 3 sit down meals. Can’t imagine doing 3 table service meals a day if we were going to restaurants that required using bus and/or car travel, parking, etc. And it was just the 2 of us adults – wouldn’t consider trying this if we had kids with us, or if we were traveling with people who don’t go to WDW often….would only suggest the DxDDP for people who don’t intend as much park time or don't have many must-do’s at the parks...and only if you really lots of restaurant time.

And then, my second reason for not doing the deluxe again…Way too much food…if we’d had one more day of it, we’d probably have started skipping meals…as it was, we didn’t buy a single snack to eat while we were there (and you get 2 a day per person!) Did not use the refillable mug a single time! I know a lot of people really lament the removal of the appetizer from the regular DDP…well my gosh, there’s no way we could eat appies all the time like that. Too full to really enjoy some of the meals, really.

Now I know there’s plenty of folks who have no trouble packing into all that food…bon appetit to you! But we just couldn’t/wouldn’t do that again. Back to the regular DDP for us.

Course…maybe if we do another 2 day getaway next year, maybe –just maybe- we’ll do the DxDDP and just do breakfast and a signature restaurant dinner….mmmm, that’s a thought…

Now I'm off to plan ressies for our May trip with DD. Homework time...hopefully they won't change the May schedule too much now.

Actually should be PBH - Portofino Bay Hotel - can't wait!:goodvibes

just looked at their website...looks awesome - have fun!

We really are going to have to try Universal someday...do you do WDW & Universal in the same trip, or on alternate vacations?

You really should try Universal, it's so much fun! We've only been once before in '07. We've never stayed on-site and are really excited about it. This year we're doing 4 nights at WDW followed by 4 nights at Universal. I'm always SO sad on our last WDW day........not this year!:cool1:

Awesome reviews!!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to share them!:flower3:

Great reviews - I really enjoyed them and that dessert sampler at GFC looked delicious. I'm not a fan of Tiramisu so would have to find a friend to take with me to eat that part ;)

we love the sampler servings for desserts - wish it was available at all the Disney restaurants. And those little desserts are bigger than you'd think.

That was one of the things we really liked at the Wave last year - the individual desserts are actually 3 tiny desserts, so you're getting a sampler of flavor in one dessert. We ordered two different ones, so had tastes of 6 diff. desserts that way. We're usually so full by the time it gets to dessert, it's really luxurious to get to try a bite or two of lots of different things without leaving most of a big dessert on the table.

Thanks for posting on the main restaurant board and adding your link about Chef de France - its one I'm thinking of trying onour next visit!! :goodvibes

Love your reviews and pictures!!
