We need to "fix" the DO NOT CALL list.

We know politicians will never allow this, and we know why, but they should be barred from using taped messages to "call" people. When we came back from 10 days in Disney we had 27 messages on our answering machine. 26 of them were these taped messages from politicians.

And since then, 2 weeks, I would be we have had another 30 - 40 of these things.

I hate telemarketing of any kind.

We got a call at 10:30 PM last week from some pollster!! Ticked me off bigtime.

I definitely think politicians & pollsters should not be exempt from the do not call list

Pollsters andf politicians do not apply to the no call rules! They are at least the only calls I get! I think it needs to be changed, but try to get the lawmakers who will want to be re-elected to change it!

It would be great if they did that, but they won't. Living in Indiana I get very few political calls though, which is a good thing.

I work for a polling company, our rule is to not call anyone after 9:00. I'm not sure if this a rule/law, or just a company policy. Politicians will never allow polling to be banned, nor should they. It is an important part of the political process and helps them gauge public support and where they need to spend money. If the DNC list applied to polls, you would have a hard time stratifying a survey so that it is fair. This could shift polls in a false direction which the race isn't actually leaning toward. I am hesitant to ban political messages, but am not totally opposed to it, but polling no way.

They would just get around the political message ban anyway by accompanying it with a poll. Like are you going to vote for Candidate A or Candidate B, and if they say B, then go into a question that says something like "Candidate B is for tax raises, decreased military spending, and supports activist judges. Do you still support Candidate B knowing this?"

There's no way around it, and it can't and won't be stopped.

I don't mind answering questions in a poll, but I HATE HATE HATE the pre-recorded negative messages that I'm receiving. It only makes me want to vote for the other guy!

But you are missing my point. TAPED MESSAGES should not be allowed. If governor ED RENDELL, of PA wants to personally call me, I'll be happy to talk to him.

But stop interupting my life ( approximately 60 times in the last month ) with taped messages that I only hang up on as soon as I know that it is a tape.

Click... goodbye... sayonara.

Once, when at a voting booth I met a candidiate for a local office. He asked me if he could talk to me before I voted. ( I thought that this was illegal at voting stations ). Anyway I let him waste his breath for 5 minutes before I told him that I would NEVER vote for him.

Why? Because every single day leading up to the election I rcv'd 3 taped messages from his office. I also rcv'd DOZENS of newspaper style ads from his office in the mail, using every single variation of my name, including misspelled versions.

I went on tell tell him that anybody who wasted that much money and effort before he was elected would only waste more money and effort after being elected.

Man, that felt good. BTW, he lost, and was never on a ballot again to the best of my knowledge.

I am so special that Ted Danson (former star of Cheers) called me PERSONALLY to tell me about pollution. I mean, he must have REALLY wanted to talk to me, because he left a voice mail for me!

Nope, political messages and polls/surveys are not covered under the FCC or FTC rules.

That is exactly how I feel. We get taped messages all the time and more mail than I know what to do with! We also get multiple calls and mailing because we recently married and I changed my name. I have updated my voter registry, but I continue to get policital mailings in my maiden name and married name and misspellings of each name. My favorite is when they use my maiden name as my first name and my married name as my last name--To Dan and Simpson Johnson. Very funny!

Funny, I've never been called by a pollster or gotten any kind of phone call for a political campaign.

Maybe if they put a limit on it? Each candidate can only call an individual X number of times per campaign? They can still do polls or "advertise" their candidate, but it won't annoy the heck out of people so much. Just a thought!

I don't understand the big deal. If I get a telemarketing call (of any kind) I just hang up. No biggie. yes, it's worse during the campaign, but in a week it'll be back to normal. :D

Hmmn... get 60, yes 60 of them in 3 weeks and see what you think then.

Well, that's about 3 per day. It would be annoying. But, still, no biggie to me.

My husband feels the same way you guys do. He put our number on the do not call list. I understand your point of view, I just disagree.

As a Libertarian, I generally dislike the government being involved in anything unless absolutely necessary. Annoying telemarketers do not rise to that level, IMO :D

I hate telemarketers too and I think it should be illegal to harass people at home like that.

I not only get the phone calls, but I've had everyone running for office stopping by the house. All the way from the candidate for drain commissioner up to state senator. I just moved in recently and hadn't met any neighbors yet but I found out that one of my neighbors is running for county commissioner. I found it kind of weird that she never stopped by to say hello until she wanted my vote.

Amen, this does not rise to the level of public welfare to necessitate government interference. It is not hurting me to get a couple of calls a day, and even if it is, it's not the government's job to regulate who can call me.

And you know, it's not because I have any sympathy for the telemarketing companies, or the politicians, i assure you, I do not. I find just as irritating as anyone else. I could kill the person who sends me faxes to my ohone line all the time.

However, very program we have is just another layer of government to be administered. It costs money. These departments grow and think of ways to justify their ever increasing budgets until death do us part, forever, amen. We have a lot of things to pay for in this country (too many things, IMO) and this is just one more thing...
