Tonight, as I was driving home from picking up DD16, we found a female dog in the middle of the street. The car in front of us almost ran her over. Luckily, she was not hit. But, we couldn't leave her there. She has no collar, and I know we can not keep her. We already own three male dogs, and another dog is not in my plans. We fed her and gave her water.. she was starving. DD16, is bathing her right now, and is begging to keep her. Tomorrow morning, she will go from house to house in our neighborhood, to ask if anyone lost her. Hopefully, she has a family looking for her.

Eventhough she didn't have a collar - if you don't find the owner tomorrow, try taking her to your vet or the humane society and see if they can find a microchip.

Good Luck!

Very good suggestion. I would also suggest hitting the local pet stores in the area as many of them may have bulletin boards where people can post lost and found animals. My wife loves to help animals (including chasing a full-sized doberman through our neighborhood at 3 am and keeping it in the garage until the next morning). She has reunited a couple of dogs with their families, one of which she found using the pet store postings and another using the microchip.

you may want to call the police non emergency number in the morning. someone may have called them if they lost their dog.

Thank you for being so kind and loving to take the poor thing home and feed it and keep it safe. It saddens me that so few people would do that anymore.(I'm a real sucker and have taken in several that I've found over the years) Let's hope it is someones pet who got out and they are looking for her and not a poor thing dumped out by a thought less person to have gotten hit and suffered all night.

Hannathy, we own 3 dogs. Our outside dogs are a cocker spaniel and a golden retreiver. The other is our inside dog, a maltese. I have been fortunate, that the one time someone left our house gate open, and our golden retreiver ran away, someone found him and called us. He had his collar and tag with our info. He was about 2.5 miles from our home, and it was about 12:30 am. The man would not accept any reward. We were so happy to be reunited with him.

It's our turn to reunite this dog with her family. I'll keep you all updated.:)

Call your animal control officer too. When we found a dog a couple of years ago, that was how we reunited him with his family. :goodvibes

Also call local vets...they may know of a lost dog of one of their clients. We found a dog once and put a "Found" ad in the Lost and Found section of the classified ads and the owners got a hold of us that way.

I believe Pet Finders? has a lost animal link. If you don't have any luck locally maybe the dog has wandered a long way from home.

Wonderful for you to bring her into your home, good luck finding her owners.

I hope you find the owner and it was so nice of you to stop!

i have to ask though, what determines and "inside" and "outside"dog? I, too, have a cocker spaniel and golden retriever and they are as much "inside" breeds, if not more, than a maltese! They thrive on affection and constant companionship. I cannot imagine letting mine live outside any time of year. My neighbors keep their dog out alot, not all night, but alot and it is always crying and it just breaks my heart to hear that.

Our vet has a bulletin board with flyers for lost pets, I would suggest calling and stopping by if there are some close to you.

Thank you for caring enough to help this dog. :)

In addition to all of these wonderful suggestions, I would suggest looking on Craigslist.com - they have a lost pet section on there somewhere. And maybe you can post a "found pet" ad on there.

Any developments? Did you find the owner? Decide to keep her?
By the way, we have 3 female dogs in our home and adopted a male - no problems so far.

Craigslist has a Pets section, I would leave out some details though to make the person prove ownership.

Thank you for helping, I would be so sad if my dog got loose!

Aw thank you for helping! Lots of good suggestions on here, especially about the microchip. Also, before surrendering her to the local pound, maybe check and see if any rescue groups in your area can take her so that she has a better chance of finding a home!

Prince and her (we are calling her annabelle.. DD16 named her) are having a competition to see who can pee more in the house:headache: Can't count the times we have cleaned the carpet. Not sure why he is doing this since he is neutered and is potty trained.

I did call the animal control in our city, and seems her owner reported her as lost. Waiting to hear back from them, to see if she matches the dog's description. I'll let you all know tomorrow.
