We Have Robins in our Yard!!

I am a bit hysterical!! I loathe winter and the hope of spring and all that it promises is a real blessing imo. Well, we live in southern NY, about an hour north of NYC and we have Robins in our yard this morning! ROBINS, I tell you. Those chubby little birds with the bright red belly and the beautiful song (do they even sing, who cares really, they are here!!) I haven't seen one since September.

Do you think it could mean spring is coming or maybe they just got dissoriented and now are lost? No Way! Spring is coming, YAY!! OK sorry for the flip out but I really love the warmer months...

Anyone else see any that live in the northern states?

Are you sure they were Robins? Robins aren't small. Some winter birds (Thrushes?) have red or rust colored bellys. I'll have to dig out my bird book now! Not to burst your bubble, believe me, if anyone wants spring to hurry up, it's me, but it's way too early for Robins. I'll just keep chanting my mantra; One more day without snow is one day closer to spring!

Ah, if only Spring were that close. I feel that we have been getting away with murder with this mild weather. I hope that the robin's are smart enough to fly south, or somewhere warmer soon. I'm afraid that winter is going to come donw on us hard soon. And Spring won't show up until June!

But do enjoy the robin's while you can!

I was driving down the road yesterday and thought I saw one, and I said, "no, it couldn't be." !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are in Arkansas. Thanks for sharing so I know that I was not just having a blonde moment.

I hate to put a damper on this but some Robins never leave.
From the Mass Audubon Society:

Tradition places the appearance of the American Robin as a harbinger of spring. This may be why each winter the Massachusetts Audubon Society receives hundreds of reports of robin sightings, sometimes numbering hundreds of birds. Actually, robins have been known to overwinter in Massachusetts since at least the early 1900s. The number of wintering robins depends largely on the severity of the weather and the abundance of food.

Overall, the number of Robins in Massachusetts has increased greatly throughout this century. Suburban landscapes are very beneficial to robins, both ornamental plantings and open green lawns provide an abundance of feeding and nesting habitat.

The ones that do go south fly through our area when they are getting to return to New England. For about 2 weeks last Spring we had thousands of them around and they were everywhere. Haven't seen a Robin since then though.

I'll let you know when they appear here but in the meantime, enjoy the winter Robins. The only thing I don't like about Florida is the strange lack of song birds.
