WE had to put our dog Gretel to sleep earlier this evening, don't know what exactly was wrong but she basically could not breathe, coughing blood. She was such a good little dog and we all had a hard time telling her goodbye or wondering if we should have ran more tests, but we could tell she was in pain so we let her go. She was 8. Just came on so sudden. Thanks for listening. I keep wondering if we did the right thing.

 You did the right thing. I worked at an Animal Hospital for over 5 years. Remember her good times. PM me if you need to talk, okay?

I think the worst part of your dog friends being hurt and sick is that they can't really understand what is happening. I am sure you did the right thing for her.

I have been there and there is always the nagging feeling of "did I do the right thing" which you get no matter your decision. When our last dog died, I kept checking just to make sure he was really gone up until until we buried him--and them I almost dug out the body (again just to make sure).

I think Gretel was very lucky to have had a family like yours and to have you there at the end.

So sorry, Gretel.'s Always so tough when that time comes. We have been there, will be again too. Never easy, always second guessing. But, I think our thoughts are generally right on, we know when the time is right for our little ones. Gretel is there, by the bridge now, barking, enjoying her new found freedom. Her memories are with you, forever.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I posted a "reply" to you in Dan's thread about Doc...

:grouphug: to you

It is so difficult when we have to say goodbye...I hope you find comfort in memories...

Awwww, I'm so sorry. :grouphug:

Please don't second guess yourself. You did what was best for Gretel. You might could have prolonged the inevitable but she would have just been miserable and in pain. It's so hard to let go but you put her needs before your needs and wants. You did the right thing.

Sending you hugs and prayers to help you get through this difficult time.

i am so sorry for you, and your family.
of course you did the right thing, don't "what if" the situation. you will drive yourself crazy if you do that.
just remember all the times you had with gretel, cry, laugh, and then cry some more. you need to grieve. it will take time, hugs and prayers sent to you all! :grouphug:

Awwww... I'm so sorry. It's really hard to tell our furry little friends goodbye, but you absolutely did the right thing, the only caring thing you could have done for sweet Gretel. paw:

Sounds like Gretel was a wonderful and very loved doggie.

I am sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family. Gretel is suffering no longer, and her family was with her to say goodbye.

I'm sorry for your loss. Pets are such special members of our families.

I'm sure you did the right thing. It's always so hard to do though. I'm sorry for the loss of your beloved pet.
