We had a mini cake and it was bad!

We were just at 1900 Park Fare last night and had ordered my daughter a miniedding cake for her birthday.
It was really bad! Very dry and the frosting just tasted like greasy butter.

We were there at Christmas and had a regular birthday cake and I don't remember it being bad.

I hate to have a whole wedding cake like this for my vow renewal (the three of us couldn't even eat this one that was the size of a cupcake).

Just hoping to find that this was just a fluke because I've heard everyone rave about the cakes.

That's not good. Did it have fondant or buttercream? I really like that Mad Hatter mini cake but I've wondered how it would taste....

It was buttercream.
I told my husband I will definitely pay for the fondant (even though I think it's buttercream underneath) if they all taste like that.

A cake with fondant does have buttercream under the fondant. It is like the 'glue' that holds the fondant on the cake.

It sounds like they didn't flavor the icing. All buttercream icing consists of is butter, crisco, powdered sugar and a tad of milk. However, in the case of pure white icing, the baker uses only crisco or a bakery shortening (special kind that doesn't melt as easily as regular shortening), milk, powdered sugar and a clear liquid butter flavoring. So, it sounds like they didn't use the flavoring.

Thats unfortunate but i do think its probably a fluke! Ive not heard of anyone else mention this before so prehaps you were just unlucky?

We've had buttercream cakes (chocolate) and mini cheesecake cakes when we've been for our anniversary and unfortunately I'll agree with the OP. It wasn't all that good. Maybe we'll try vanilla this time...

I've had both the wedding cake and mini wedding cake done in buttercream and both were fantastic. Hopefully your mini was just a fluke.

Don't worry - the mini cakes that you order directly from the restaurant are NOT the ones custom made by the bakery for weddings! They are frozen and kept on hand for anyone to order at the last minute - it was 6 inches and cost something like $12, right?

It's the 8-inch and larger cakes that are made to order in the same flavors as wedding cakes. These are fresh, and if you order one to be served at a restaurant in the Grand Floridian, it will taste exactly like your wedding cake (GF bakery does nearly all DFTW cakes).

:thumbsup2

P.S.. Here's a link to the thread with instructions on ordering a custom cake:

This is really good to know. And yep, you're about right with the size and price.

::sigh:: Guess we'll just have to order a larger, fresh cake this year for our Disneyversary. lol!!

Good to know - thanks! Our wedding cake was made by the WL bakery since we got married on Sunrise Terrace and it tasted amazing! It was the best cake!! This year DH's parents are celebrating 40 years and DH and I are celebrating our second anniversary just one week before, so we're planning to go to Disney for a long weekend and I'll be sure to pre-order a cake for all of us.

Mmgibbs4, it honestly sounds like your daughter's mini-cake was a fluke.

I had mini-cakes served at my FTW vow renewal. They were delicious and were more than enough to feed my guests (I couldn't finish mine). Here are some photographs:

I also had mini-cakes served at a private party that I hosted at the Grand Floridian last summer. They too were delicious and were more than enough to feed my guests. Here are a few photos:

I hope that if you have a FTW vow renewal, and that if you have mini-cakes served, that they're as delicious as the ones that have been served at my events. Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary!

Janet2k those cakes are absolutely beautiful!
The cake was just like some of yours, about the size of a cupcake and 2 layers.
I'm hoping as someone else mentioned that they just forgot the flavoring.
Our 6 inch cake at Christmas time for a birthday at 1900 Park Fare was really good.
This was in the same restaurant so I thought it should taste the same.

Thanks to all of you for all of your help!
