Against all the odds we have got a 1 bed at HH for the second week in July 06!!!! Yipeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now for the inevitable questions!!!!!! It is our first trip so I have lots to ask all you experts!!
1) How hot and crowded will it be there at that time of year? Should I expect much rain?
2) Hubby is a keen golfer....does Disney get discounted rates at any HH courses? Which are the nicest courses to play?
3) Which local restaurants would you recommend?
4) any trips/local attractions that are not to be missed?
5) How difficult is the drive from WDW to HH?!!!! Will hubby and I make it without killing each other!?!?!

Thanks in advance for all your help!
love

This a great resort and island. The kids like HH better then WDW. There is alot to do. Not sure about golf, but I know there are a few near the Beachhouse so he can go there after golf as you are at the pool/Beach. Go to the redfish for dinner. Do the Dolphin tour throw Disney, the small boat. If you have kids do the pool games at the beach house, BQ night at the resort with the slide night and DJ.. Hang out by the pool and do some activities around the resort, have a few frozen drinks and beer by the pool. There is more but I do not have time to list them.

Yes its very hot! However, bring everyone a jacket. Yes a jacket, for dinning. We found most of the places freezing inside.

When you are standing on the resort side, looking away across the bridge, there are 2 resturaunts. The one on the left is Kingfishers I think, but its definately the one on the left side, had horrible service and not very impressive food. Skip it. The place on the right was excellent.

There was no rain on our July trip, last year.

Im collecting reccommendations on another thread. I cant speak personally, but Robert Trent Jones and Harbourtown Glof Links golf courses were just reccommended to me. So was Stickey Fingers Rib House.

It is extremely hot there in July so if your DH is going to golf I think he may be happy with an early tee time.

congrats and have a great trip. :Pinkbounc

I'll also confirm that it is very hot and humid at HH in July, but the ocean and surrounding are wonderful and there seems to usually be a breeze and the water tempers things. Enjoy! What great luck to get a 1BR at the 7 month mark. You will love the resort. I think it might be our favorite resort, though we like being at WDW for reasons other than the resorts themselves! The drive from WDW should be a quite easy one. We drove up from our cruise in July 2003 and it was a very smooth and easy drive.

HHI is wonderful

We don't golf, so can't help you there.

We like Mellow Mushroom for pizza, and Nick's Steak and Seafood Restaurant.

We had a wonderful dinner/ Tuesday night fireworks cruise on the Palmetto Star. Check out vagabondcruises.com

As soon as you arrive, look into renting an umbrella at the beach. You will be grateful for the shade, if you are spending a lot of time on the beach.

Enjoy!

One year it was so hot in July our DS would cry when his bare feet touched the ground by the pool because it burned them. Last year it was still hot but not sweltering. The resort is wonderful, the pool is awesome. We have never done this but lots of folks go crabbing off of the end of the pier. You can get all the needed materials at the resort. On Tuesdays Shelter Cove has fireworks and the best view is from the resort. Maybe you will luck out and get a great view from your room. Don't know much about golf but there is a wealth of restaurants to choose from. Usually when you check in they give you an advertisement magazine with menus from various places. We always order in from Guiseppes. Great spaghetti. Have an awesome time!!

You will love HHI resort! We were there in July 2 years ago and it was very Hot and humid...pool at resort was like bath water and CM even dumped huge buckets of ice to cool it off! Beach house pool was better and ocean very nice! They have pool games for the kids (if you have any) every day. Welove builing 31 very private and we watched dolphins enter shelter cove evry morning and frolic with the kayakers. Scott fish house at Shelter Cove is great as is the Old oyster House(further toward mainland). Hilton Head Diner (open 24hrs) had great diner food; Guiseppe's also good take out. I would ask resort which golf clubs honor DVC discount(they give you the info on check-in). Fire works on Tues were great from the resort. We are going the last week in June after a quick WDW visit/convention. Have fun.

My family loves going to HH, probably even more than WDW. We always have lunch one afternoon at the Salty Dog Cafe. It has decent food and a fun atmosphere. It usually gets pretty crowded, especially during peak season, which is one drawback of eating there. We also like Giuseppi's, and have both eaten at the restaurant and ordered carry-out. Another place where you'll probably have a long wait.

DH and I had dinner at Kingfisher during Easter week '05 while our boys participated in the teen night out. I completely agree with the other poster that the food was very mediocre, and so was the service. The only thing that was good was our table, which was right by the window. We won't return to that restaurant.

We went over the 4th of July in 2003, and did have a lot of rain throughout the week. We did have some sunshine as well, so it kind of balanced out. Rain or shine, we still love it there!

EVERYWHERE in the South is hot and humid in July!!! We love HH, too, and enjoy riding bikes (reserve as soon as you can so they don't sell out...that happened to us once). Loved a recent dinner at Marley's near Sea Pines Circle. A little on the funky side but great food and service. Reasonably priced. Good shopping (outlets and boutiques) and plenty of beach to enjoy! Have a blast!

Thanks for all the info, I am watching this thread, as we, too, got July 4th week at the 7 month window.

3) Which local restaurants would you recommend?

When deciding on your restaurants, take a look at Restaurant.com. They have certificates for alot of restuarants in that area and also provide you with the menu for the restuarant.

We used it last time at HH - we tried a few different restaurants. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name - sorry.

I can only help with #2 and #3. DH loves the Robert Trent Jones course across the street at Palmetto Dunes. He also liked the Arthur Hill course there (I think that was the name). Although he didn't like Indigo Run, I know another golfer who loves it. Maybe the fact that DH went on a very cold, windy, yech-y day influenced his impression. Shipyard was OK, but RTJ was his fave (so far).
For resturaunts, we've enjoyed Cafe Europa, Captain's Seafood, Hudson's, and It's Greek to Me. We've also heard great reports on Old Fort Pub (I think that's the name), the Jazz Company(?), Signe's, and the Sea Shack, all places we hope to try out next time.

Thank you for all your help so far!! We're so excited that we're going as we really didn't think that we'd get in at the 7 mnth mark!!! We've requested a marsh view but I don't know how many of the 1 bed units have this view!

What trips/activities does Disney offer at the resort? Any that you particuarly recommend, or that you were not impressed with?! It will be me, hubby and son aged 5yrs.

Can you walk/bike to the beach? Does Disney rent bikes?

What is the 'private affair'?? Does anyone have an e-mail address for the resort?

Many thanks

Congrats to all who got in to HH @ the 7 month window for this summer! We were a little too late and are on the waitlist for ANYTHING that comes along before 7/7. Has anyone had any luck on the waitlist here?

We love Hilton Head and have been in July the last 5 years. As some have said, it's very hot and humid. We've seen the afternoon temperatures up to about 115 at the beach house pool. Definately time to get out of the sun.

We love to ride bikes to the beach. Sometimes one of us will drive our stuff down to the beach so we can ride as a family. Our DS5 has been doing the ride for 2 years now on a two wheeler. The path is smooth and easy to ride, even for a beginner. It's about a mile to the beach from the resort.

Last summer, we dined at The Sea Shack. It's one of the restaurants reviewed by Rachele Ray from the Food Network. Down to earth prices and definately worth the trip there. It's a little off the main path, I'm sure if you ask at the resort for directions they will be able to help you. We were there for lunch at 11 when they opened, and it was very busy when we left. A lot of the diners were regulars there on their weekly lunch out. It's definately one our repeat restaurant list.

Our absolute favorite activities are those offered through the resort for dolphin watching, beach combing and shark fishing. All are done through Low Country Nature Tours. Scott and his crew do an awesome job and we've always felt it's worth the money we spend. It's truly the highlight of our week there. We always do the beach combing as it's the best of both worlds. We get to see dolphins on the way out to Dufuskie Island. Then when we get to the Island, we get out of the boat and walk the beach. Each trip has offered something different along the beach -- sand dollars, star fish, crabs, snails. An awesome experience which we can't repeat and hope they continue to offer.

We've also done shark fishing the last two summers. The first year, my DS11 had a hot rod and caught amazing things -- several sharks, many different sizes, as well as 3 different rays. Each weighed quite a bit and it was certainly an experience in itself.

We'll be back next summer, the end of July. We thought, only for a split second, about skipping our trip next July, but none of us would have been happy. We absolutely love it there.

We will be at HHI July 8th-14th!!! Our 3rd year in a row, first time in July. It is our favorite resort hands down.
