So I was on the phone with MS just now, and mentioned that if I couldn't use the 105 points that I have left over, that I would probably "rent" a reservation to someone. She jumped down my throat and said that DVC doesn't allow anyone to do that.

So what gives? I've rented ressies before I became a DVC member, and never knew there was a problem with doing it. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention, but how do people get away with renting a reservation? If it's not allowed by DVC, then how do members go about doing it? :confused3

If someone could explain this to me, I'd appreciate it!

The CM was wrong. It is allowed. Only commercial renting (currently defined [is it even defined somewhere] as 20 rentals/year or something like that).

The person you spoke with was definitely wrong.

Yep, renting is allowed and is even stated in the agreement we signed with DVC. What isn't allowed is to get a payment for transferring points. It is done but don't tell MS that.

Plus you are required to tell DVC if you are renting a reservation to someone. Someone needs to educate MS.

As I understand it, you can't rent a reservation, right? You can rent points and book a reservation for someone, but you can't book a reservation then try to rent it out....

Renting of DVC points is allowed. Commercial renting is not allowed, but there has not been much done to shutdown commercial renters either.

A reservation is the only thing that can be rented since points are only of value to the member who controls the points in his/her account, points would be of no use to anyone else.

A number of posters have reported similar comments from MS reps, but our POS documents expressly permit the rental of a reservation to another person (just as Disney does every day). There is a vague comment about not allowing a "pattern of commercial activity" but no stated definition for what that would entail. Regardless, the Board of Directors has the responsibility to enforce the rules of the program and all contracts to date include directions about what is required for an owner to rent reservations to others and what responsibility the renter will have.

If a member has a reservation they find they are unable to use, they are also allowed to rent to that to someone else. On the DIS DVC Rent/Trade Board, that is allowed as long as the arrival date is within 30 days.

Yes you can. I think what you are thinking of is the DIS Board rule that you cannot place a listing on the rental board for an existing reservation more than 30 days ahead.

Thanks for all of the answers, I was sure that gal at MS was wrong, but she was so insistent that she was right.

It's good to know that I have that as an option. :)
