I just picked it up this afternoon and can't wait to get it in the water. We've been wanting one for quite a while, and I was finally able to find one on an end of summer clearance that fits our needs perfectly. I'm ready to head out this weekend to a popular canoeing area and do an overnight canoe camping trip, but dh is being all practical and thinks we should test it out close to home first. :p So, I told him we're heading over to the local park and putting it in the creek tomorrow as soon as he gets off work. I'm going to pack a picnic dinner, and we'll be all set. Can't wait! :teeth:

Oh, WOW!!! How fun and exciting. I love to canoe, but we have never done an overnight. You are gonna have fun with that!

Sounds fun, Wendy!

We got a double kayak earlier this summer, to have at the beach, and it's been a lot of fun....hard on the stomach muscles though! ;)

Browneyes, that's what my DH said too! LOL! One of the first things he asked was if I remembered the paddles. Yes, I did remember the paddles. :p

Congratulations!

Many years ago, DH & I were out on a canoe fishing. DH's daughter casted her line and got it caught on a branch on the other side of the little creek we were in. DH being the fisher guy he is couldn't just cut the line and loose that bobber. He had to try and retrieve it. So, he paddles across the water close to the bobber and manages to get my head struck by a downed branch. As I tried to move away from it, the next thing I knew I was in the water, hitting the bottom head down. All I could think of (besides the snakes and such we had seen in the water) was where was my step daughter. I came out of the water to see her and my DH both sitting in the canoe -- dry and clean as can be laughing their heads off. DH had seen what was happening and grabbed onto the downed tree to save himself and his daughter. He said my eyes were the size of saucers and I looked like the creature from the deep lagoon with sticks and all coming out of my hair. I crawled back into the canoe, put life jackets on both myself and my stepdaughter and said "that's it, I'm done". Never have gotten back in a canoe to this day and I have no intentions of ever going again. But, DH & my DS8 now enjoy canoing. Fortunately, I've bought DH a lifetime supply of bobbers so he'll never have to retrieve one again.

Have fun!:D

life jackets.....I know alot of people say....oh we don't need them.....but growing up near Sebago lake and also the Saco river....things happen........four camp counselors from NH died this past week from currents.....just be careful everyone......cause i luv you all.....

Sounds like a lot of fun, Wendy! Which park are you going to that has canoing? FCR? That's the only one I can think of...

Have a great time! I'm sure your kids will love it (and you of course :D )

If you want to go that far for a fun overnighter, Zilcher park in Austin has some *beautiful* water. I know you can rent canoes, but I think I saw people bringing their own in as well.

HAVE FUN

Our summer canoing is just about over. Since the end of June we have been involved in the Scouts summer canoe/kayak/sailing course here.
The whole course is five years, the first is strictly canoe, second and third are canoe and kayak and then two years of sailing.

On the water twice a week with two weekend trips with the kids. I teach first year, DD is in second year and DS is in third year. Next year he starts to sail.

So, what type of canoe did you get, how big, what colour, enquiring minds need to know .... and so do those of us who are just plain nosy.

I found an interesting idea recently in a magazine, collapsable foldable canoes and kayaks that fold down to a small duffle bag or in the case of the kayak, a back pack. The writer was saying who safe and sturdy they were but I am just a little uneasy with the idea.

Going to do any caches by canoe? LOL We did one cache by jetski.

We've got a 40 yr old canoe (we restored it)..... but we don't use it too much. I too am afraid of tipping over & not being able to get back in.

I can't get back on the jetski when I fall of either.
